I think those weights tell the story of why Irish horses win most races  in Britain that are open to good horses, we simply have the best horses even your handicapper agrees....

Managed decline I think they call it. tptb are creating the decline! not far off just being another valuable handicap like the Irish version, will be soon enough.

Moaning about field sizes when there is too much racing, most of the time running for pathetic prize money. Now the Grand National is just a farce of the race it used to be,and the BHB do not know why NH racing here is in decline.Attendances are not down due to field sizes its the cost of going to the races and paying over the odds prices for drinks and food, also having to pay for a programme which should be included in the entrance fee.

Some horses shouldn't be allowed in, 13 and 27 wouldn't stay in a horse box.

The race is basically finished.

Is the handicapper to blame for keeping some of these older horses high in the weights, when was the last time Dusart picked his feet up

Attendances are down because the last horserace betting generations are dying off, imo.

Yes definitely the case Longbridge. The older brigade are not being replaced by new blood - well certainly not during the week

The usp of the GN was that is was so different to anything else. You didn't need to understand horse racing to enjoy it, and it was a family event. Most of us would have grown up having a bet on it. They can't do anything about the general societal trends and atomising of people. But they have also hollowed out the race as was, and the jeopardy has been removed. The carnage was the appeal, like it or not. It's symptomatic of trying to attract/appease an audience that isn't interested anyway, whilst alienating the audience that is interested. See the BBC.

List of equine fatalities in the Grand National

Becher's Brook, historically the most dangerous fence. By William Barnes Wollen, 1890.
This is a list of equine fatalities in the Grand National, an annual steeplechase horse racing event held at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool. The Grand National is a National Hunt handicap race that is held over a distance of 4 miles and 3½ furlongs, with a field of 34 horses jumping 30 fences.

According to the British Horseracing Authority, modern steeplechase races have an average of just over 4 equine fatalities for every 1,000 horses taking part in a race.[1] The Aintree Grand National yielded 7 equine fatalities out of 439 horses taking part between 2000 and 2010, a rate of almost 16 equine fatalities per 1,000 horses taking part (or 0.64 fatalities per race of 40 horses). In the five years to 2023, the fatality rate has risen, averaging 25 equine fatalities per 1,000 horses taking part (or one fatality per race of 40 horses).[2][3]

Background
The high number of equine deaths in the Aintree Grand National race has made it a focus for animal rights activists. While course officials have taken safety measures over the years, such as improving veterinary facilities and reducing the severity of fences,[4] some campaign for further modifications and even the abolition of the event that was inaugurated in 1839.[5]

After the 1989 Grand National, in which two horses died in incidents at Becher's Brook (the sixth and 22nd fence on the course), Aintree began making significant changes to the fences that are jumped during the National. The brook on the landing-side of Becher's was filled in to prevent horses rolling back into it, and the incline on the landing-side has been mostly levelled out, whilst retaining a drop to slow the runners. Other fences have been reduced in height, toe-boards have been made taller, and the entry requirements for participating horses have been made stricter, such as the requirement for runners to have been placed fourth or better in a previously recognised steeplechase over a distance of at least three miles.

Some within the horseracing community, including some with notable achievements in the Grand National, such as Ginger McCain and Bob Champion,[6][7][8] have argued that the lowering of fences and the narrowing of ditches, primarily designed to increase horse safety, has had the adverse effect by encouraging the runners to race faster. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Grand National saw a total of 12 horses die (half of which were at Becher's Brook); in the next 20-year period from 1990 to 2010, when modifications to the course were most significant, there were 17 equine fatalities.

List of fatalities
The animal welfare charity League Against Cruel Sports counts the number of horse deaths at 40 over the three-day meet from the year 2000 to 2013.[9] The following list details the equine fatalities during, or as a direct result of participating in, the Grand National, that is, the showpiece steeplechase itself rather than all the various races held over the entire three-day "Grand National meeting" (which includes two other races over one circuit of the National course: the Fox Hunters for amateur jockeys and the Topham for professional jockeys).

The list includes, where applicable and where known, the fence at which the fatality occurred.[10]

Horse racing is attritional, especially jumps. Either you think it's justifiable, follow it/bet on it. Or you don't have anything to do with it.

Personally I think it is quite difficult to justify. But I can't have it both ways, so take the rough with the the smooth as the positives outweigh the negatives. I have no problem with people who think it should end, as that side of the argument is valid. However this half way house, hollowing it out but still getting fatalities pleases nobody.

The G/N is great for the animal rights groups as it highlights  their argument for banning racing wether there is fatalities or not.Its a gift to them that keeps giving every April.

Agree entirely, I always find myself cringing when I try to defend it to my friends by saying, "They are treated like kings and they love doing it" luckily, as yet, no-one has come back to me and said, "If you were able to explain the risks involved to the horses, how many would then say, right, thanks for that,  think I'll give it a miss then"!

For me, this race has long since had its day.  I started watching in 1960 and saw every National until about 5 years ago. I couldn't tell you a single winner since then, or any that ran in the race.

It's a pity that racing can't find some other way to finance itself rather than depend on races like this for its moneyspinners, however it's not for me to spoil others enjoyment.

Looking at those entered, I couldn't even tell you who trains any of them.  I only watch the occasional hurdle race nowadays.  I don't expect anyone else here to feel quite the same though, of my vintage that is.

I have not missed a Grand National for over 50 Years nothing could touch it for excitement but i think it has just about had it's Day. It still gets massive crowds but i think the fatalities will finish the Race for good in the end.Attitudes are changing so we all better get used to it.

its all relative isnt it ...imagine showing the grand national to folk in palastine and saying " look how cruel this is " ......or how many people say the national is cruel yet buy the cheapest , horrible chicken take aways and their wife splatters spiders as she " hates them " ....fact is , animals really don't have any rights . we just choose the ones we like to protect and dismiss the others . i'd rather come back as a racehorse than many other animals for sure .
