This woman gave open banking access (this is part of an AC) and along with the other info that would also be requested with an affordability check, she had her phone (two factor authentication) taken over, her bank account taken over. Of course, the betfair account would also be emptied for us.

A north London teacher has warned others to be on their guard if their mobile phone suddenly stops working. Fraudsters apparently used the ID information she had given to a lettings agent to first take over her phone and then clean out her bank account.

Angela Nevin* says she is still reeling from the episode that caused her “no end of anxiety and stress” as she waited for more than 10 days to see if Barclays would return the £3,500 that was stolen. She is the latest person to have her mobile’s sim card taken over by fraudsters to use it to gain one-time passcodes to authorise bank withdrawals.

If her phone was taken over more likely downloaded dodgy sites especially games.

Tapjacking

Scammers can now hijack your smartphone screen, forcing you to perform actions on your phone without realising.

Tapjacking works by showing an overlay on your phone screen which appears clickable.

But in reality that is merely an image, which prevents you from seeing what you are actually tapping on.

In a mobile game, for example, you may appear to be engaging with game elements, but in fact your clicks are making in-app purchases, or signing you up to a subscription via an invisible screen underneath the overlay.

Which? recommends sticking to apps downloaded via sources such as the Apple App store or Google Play Store, and reading reviews before you start installing.

Scammers always miles in front of security.
Report longbridge February 19, 2024 12:39 PM GMT
ladycarla - did you read the article?  I see nothing to suggest the victim had enabled this by visiting dodgy sites.  The takeover was done by the scammers obtaining a duplicate SIM for the victim's phone, enabling them to create a clone of her phone on a phone in their possession.

The bit that would worry me is this:

"She says that to show she had sufficient funds to pay the rent she also had to agree to give the company open access to her Barclays current and savings accounts using Open Banking"

I don't think any bookie AC requires that?
Report longbridge February 19, 2024 12:40 PM GMT
Also, don't configure your security questions to be things that can easily be discovered, such as DOB or town of birth.
Report ladycarla February 19, 2024 12:42 PM GMT
Longbridge- not read article, just pointing out there's loads of ways scammers can get info- think OP is mis-leading.

Here's another:

Quishing

Another phishing spin-off, quishing sees scammers utilising the QR code technology that we have all begun to take for granted following its mass prevalence in restaurants and bars during the Covid pandemic.

Scammers use QR codes to lead victims to fake login pages, where they can take your details, or make you sign up to expensive subscriptions without realising.

In some cases, these QR codes are sent via email, disguised as legitimate communications, often via previously compromised email addresses.

But there have also been reports of false QR codes being stuck to parking meters, which take victims to fake apps which will then sign them up to costly subscriptions.

longbridge, open banking access has been suggested as a vehicle for "seamless" affordability checks.

formoftheace/lady carla - both of you obv haven't read the article. The woman simply gave exactly the info/access that would be used for affordability checks in order to secure a rented property.

Sparrow- the forum don't need advice like that it's the Guardian CryCryCry

i think dave & longbridge are more highlighting the issue of how safe your data may be even when you supply it yourself in good faitg (in any situation not just affordability checks)

as per a recent thread where it was mentioned that bf had previously been in a situation where they "lost" peoples data

Dave- This is what will happen if you give AC info- is a lie, gave mine 2 years ago and nothing has happened-

Why can't you just put a thread up without pushing the don't do AC b o llocks, it's fact of life that for 95% of people will have to do them in the future for all sorts of financial checks- there have always be scammers, can't you remember cheque book scams?? etc.

I know you WILL never give your info which is your right but it's not going away, the banks are getting very good at spotting these scams but like in the past can't stop everyone.

If everyone was like you there would be £2 in every box on this first race because 95% of punters halfway through the month would of done their £100 limit and be waiting for March 1st.
Report formoftheace February 19, 2024 1:20 PM GMT
There was a woman on a scammers program recently who had the same experience…..she opened a link on her phone to which it froze….the scum were in……

They asked for her to put in the six digit number…..they sounded legitimate…..zzzz ffs

Oh ok fair enough, I've known 3 people have their bank cleaned out all by different methods and all got their money refunded, I would guess that would be the case with 99% today.
Report dave1357 February 19, 2024 1:44 PM GMT
Just because your info hasn't been misused ladycarla, doesn't mean that it won't be in the future. And most certainly doesn't mean that someone elses won't be misused.

And as far as banks refunding losses is concerned - giving info that was misused so you can gamble isn't likely to be treated sympathetically (and also as lazza7 pointed out the £85k is deposit protection).
Report elise February 19, 2024 1:45 PM GMT
there are some ways you may recover losses, sometimes a bank can step in , there are some fee services as well, but it usually depends upon whether the access is through hacking or your own negligence
Report ladycarla February 19, 2024 1:47 PM GMT
Ok Dave what percentage of punters IYO here on betfair who have given their AC have been scammed?
Report GoBallistic February 19, 2024 1:49 PM GMT
I'm fairly confident bookmaker AC checks have not been and will not be requesting open banking access but feel free to convince me otherwise.
Report dave1357 February 19, 2024 1:53 PM GMT
It hasn't been fully rolled out yet (don't confuse source of funds with AC) and bookies certainly haven't been targeted by crims as an a source of valuable info. But when they realise the opportunities, they will be looking at infiltrating CS operations.

The Guardian simply reported a woman being defrauded and who supplied the info that is requested for AC. Are you saying they made that up?

No but I would have a large bet they haven't warned us who the letting agent is
