Given that Cussack has been tried (and won) at 10f, I'm tempted to look further down the market now he's back down to 7f.
And the eye is drawn to Razaam. This lad has been kept to sprinting since his 2 year old days but given his run style, there's a distinct possibility he needs this trip, now that he's turned 4. He did win over 5f at Yarmouth as recently as last summer, but in his last two Southwell runs at 6f, he's been doing his best work late on.
They tried 7f at Chelmsford in a better race than todays, but it turned into something of a sprint, and the Appleby charge got caught out for a turn of foot. The race itself has worked out well. Both Revolutionise (3rd) and Ultramarine (2nd) have bettered class 4 opposition since.
His latest 4th at Southwell has also worked out well. The horse than beat him a neck that day (Ice cool Harry) came out on top in a class 4 at Wolverhampton on Friday. Again, a grade above todays.
If you go back far enough, the gelding has run twice before at Newcastle, finishing second both times - latterly in a class 4 handicap over 6f. He moves down to his previous winning mark of 72 today, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he is going up the handicap, and capable of winning of marks in the late 70's - The form of the trainer is a plus, and I'm looking forward to seeing him run.
You could do worse than cover on Alexander James, who (literally) wasn't put in the race over course and distance last time - and finished on the bridle. He has won off 83 (70 today) at Newcastle in days gone by, but he is half the age of the selection so I'm hoping the younger horse will come out on top.
6.30 Newcastle - Tyke 11/2
Ironically this gelding beat Razaam at Southwell over 6f at Southwell just before the turn of the year. The handicapper put him up 4lbs for that, and his two runs since haven't set the world on fire. However in both races, he was keen in small fields - and just lacked a change of gear when it mattered. There's a worry they'll go a crawl, and he'll pull his chance away again. But a bigger field could play to his strengths, and if Master Dandy or El Montjean go forward, the race could set up for him.
Sibyl Charm is much respected, and a strong run 6f, from a decent draw, could also see her come to the fore.
