Like Paul Nicholls in January, Nicky Henderson has had a relatively quiet 2 weeks but he is running a few today and Nico de Boinville is down to ride a couple of them. All trainers have quiet periods, some deliberate to give horses vaccinations etc, and it is worth noting how they run when they get going again.

Great trainer but as a place better he frustrates me a bit because if his horse weakens near the finish they are not pressed hard if they can't win. Been stung a few times where a nailed on third is passed on the run in by a more enthusiastic jockey. Not saying he is cheating just that he looks after his horses once they can,'t win. I realise he is not running his stable just for me !

Great Trainer and one of the best in my time where would we be without them some great memories god luck to him today but not on my placepots Laugh

Good trainer of his best horses but if they are not Grade 1 material I don't think they are very well trained or placed these days.
Report in hell • February 8, 2024 4:01 PM GMT
I'd agree with that, the handicappers just run anywhere and it's thought they don't really give much thought to them.

Doesn't get many 3 mile chasers these days
Report mitolo • February 8, 2024 4:28 PM GMT
we had a couple of boats with him long ago and he didnt seem bothered at all although he did tell us one of them would win by a mile 1st up and it did
Report shoodacoodadidnt • February 8, 2024 7:26 PM GMT
cost me a fortune over the years, so I hate him.... not his fault really - for so many years I didn't have a clue what these villains were up to - I used to look at recent form ..... means nowt - some of us take longer than others to wake up ;)

Great trainer but his blind loyalty to his second rate jockey Nico DB is costing him bigtime. Details matter and Nico will find a way to lose in close races.

I'll 'lay' Shishkin tomorrow.
Report sageform • February 9, 2024 5:33 PM GMT
Already laid Shishkin. He has drifted from 1.69 to 1.81 since my bet. It will be very testing ground.

Thanks Loyal - it sure is :)

I think Shishkin is lay of the week. Nico will screw up the tactics - guaranteed! Plus the horse is becoming a basket case.

Worried about the ground for Shiskin.

He's won 6 times on soft, once on heavy!
Report sageform • February 10, 2024 12:57 PM GMT
It seems to be the standard excuse for any horse these days. They are supposed to be Steeplechasers who used to run across ploughed fields.

Report Newmarket-spurs • February 10, 2024 1:09 PM GMT
12.55 another Nico DB 'masterclass'..... allows the favourite a soft lead, cruises through the race a few lengths down in second, cant make up the ground in the straight finishing second as always.
An amateur jockey riding way out of his depth.
Henderson should have a Top 3 jockey riding for him. Nico isn't even Top 50.
I hope everyone is on lay of the week Shiskin. Nico will screw it up even if the horse runs well.
Report LoyalHoncho • February 10, 2024 1:19 PM GMT
Not a thing wrong with his riding of the horse,  Had it in a great position all the way round, kept it beautifully balanced, chased a hot pace and beaten  by a better horse on the day.
Nothing whatsoever wrong with the way he rode the horse.
Sometimes you finish second.
Report LoyalHoncho • February 10, 2024 1:19 PM GMT
Good luck to Shishkin.
Report sageform • February 10, 2024 1:21 PM GMT
So how bad was Jonjo junior. Hasthing was favourite overnight, drifted today and then was dropped out in a race where the first 3 hardly changed all race apart from Skelton making late headway to catch Fourtown on the line.
Report Newmarket-spurs • February 10, 2024 1:34 PM GMT
Loyalhoncho - no horses came from behind including the joint fav. Nico does this ALL the time as he has no clock in his head, no tactical awareness and generally gets caught out by superior jockeys. He should have had East India much closer and went much sooner.
He is one of the worst jockey's I have ever seen at the elite level. He is no Barry G thats for sure.
Report acey deucy • February 10, 2024 1:40 PM GMT

You're entitled to your opinion, however much I disagree with it.
When did you last ride a racehorse by the way?
Report impossible123 • February 10, 2024 2:09 PM GMT
I think Shishkin will be pulled up after a few fences because of the ground. Then Hendo would said "to save him for the Gold Cup next month".
Report Newmarket-spurs • February 10, 2024 2:10 PM GMT
Loyalhoncho - My apologies. I had no idea that only current and ex jockeys were allowed to voice an opinion on here. How embarrassing...I'll go now and leave it to the experts like yourself.

Nico rode a shocker there.  gave the long time leader far too much rope,  Should have won by 10 lengths, not the four he did.

GENIUS of a jockey, as witnessed by the way he presented at the fourth last!

Great jock on the big days unlike his 2nd jock, Bowen.
Report impossible123 • February 10, 2024 2:25 PM GMT
I think Shishkin ran very well. A couple of sticky fences, and ran a touch in snatches but no great concern for me; Altior was the same. And, I think he'll be finishing up the Cheltenham hill too.

Watch out Galopin Des Champs!

Everybody is allowed to comment, but you go out of your way to ram your opinions.  Which is ok if you have the ecperience in a saddle.
I don;t either by the way but then I try not to bully other forumites with bombast - unlike you.

Bowen found trouble, twice, in a four horse race the other day!  Go figure how big stables employ him.
Report duffy • February 10, 2024 2:29 PM GMT
Nico did a good job today, however I wanted to see a really impressive performance from the horse today with the Gold Cup in mind, didn't really get it .

You can't be coming on and off the bridle like that in a GC, he'll just lose his place, throw in the poor jumping and he's right up against it and he'll just give himself way too much to do.

I think you may be right but then he has a real superstar, in my opinion, granted, to beat.
His beating of  Hitman is no great recommendation but his beating of Protektorat gives him every right to give it a bash though.  Again, in my opinion.

Where is spurs?

Shishkin has not had a run since Kempton. And, post finishing like that today I'm more convinced Shishkin would have won the King George; he'll be finishing like that too in the Gold Cup next month.

If alongside Galopin Des Champs or any other horse after the last my money will be on Shishkin 100%.
Report LoyalHoncho • February 10, 2024 3:01 PM GMT

Did you lay SHISHKIN today, as you said you would?
Report in hell • February 12, 2024 10:46 AM GMT
Shishkin, he's always been on and off the bridle, even over 2 miles, but will keep finding, it's just the coming of the bridle that is the issue and around Cheltenham that could be an issue like in the Ryanair when he got into trouble.

Would love to see him win the Gold Cup, just not sure though.
Report in hell • February 12, 2024 10:47 AM GMT
Regards Nico, he doesn't get it very wrong on the big days and agree with James Bowen wouldn't have him on anything.
Report impossible123 • February 12, 2024 11:33 AM GMT
'saxon farm', no I backed Protektorat (foolishly/forgotten tough previous race) to minimise pain for the Gold Cup (GC) just in case (I've backed Shishkin). Lately, my interest for this game is vaning by the day. Very possibly post Epsom Derby I may venture elsewhere for recreation than horseracing.
