4.15 Newcastle. Jolly trav well and going clear 2nd fav finishing fast down the rail. Haley on the fav spots the closer moves across and briefly checks the momentum of the challenger. Fav ridden out strongly to the line, holds on.

If the fav had stayed straight it would have been beaten.

We've seen a few  close finishes this week where contact has been made, the stewards have had a look and it can go either way.

Is taking another runners ground any different to a bump?

Do the rules need to change?

Nothing in the rules that says you cannot move over to the rail, as long as not too early in the race or insufficiently clear of any hoss on the inside.

Currently not breaking the rules.

I remember Michael Owen ( Not my fav football pundit ) referring to the tactic of taking a rivals ground in a finish as cheating.

no idea what you're watching werbs..fav was 3-4yds from rail and 2nd 2-3yds.

Watch it again. Intimidation or taking the line, jock on 2nd fav having to check the run
Report Rico-Dangleflaps • January 26, 2024 1:38 PM GMT
never stopped 2nd's momentum at any stage imo.

When 2nd favs level with horse in green it gets 2 cracks of the whip, just about to get a 3rd when jock has to take preventative measures to avoid a  potential collision. Correction happens then jock continues to use whip. Race over.

2nd fav would have won no doubt
Report elise • January 26, 2024 2:12 PM GMT
then should you be asking whether the jockey on the 2nd rode a good race in finding trouble?
Report werbie • January 26, 2024 2:23 PM GMT
In hindsight probs pushing his luck. But the original question, should there be a  rule change on a horse in front taking a challengers path to prevent them winning?
Report elise • January 26, 2024 2:29 PM GMT
race riding v careless (improper/dangerous obv if worse) already exists, the stewards can't police anything correctly, how do you change the rules for the better where it's fair & can be policed consistently by a bunch of amateurs?

a rider behind has just as much responsibility as one in front, sticking your horse where it shouldn't be is just as risky

if there was going to be changes then in the wake of tylicki's kempton episode it might have seen a makeover, stewards on the night did absolutely nothing and if you go and watch that carnage you'd see how much you're up against
Report swiftynifty • January 26, 2024 4:02 PM GMT
Did Michael Owen suggest the jockey on the horse behind should throw himself to the ground? He was very good at that.
Report werbie • January 26, 2024 4:29 PM GMT
Yes Swifty, MO would have dovetailed nicely into todays game. Also hope he knows more about racing than football but wouldn't bet on it Plain

But where do you draw the line? Jockeys are often doing their best (sometimes pre planned) to box in favourites. Best Mate in his third GC is a high profile example but no rules were broken. If you are more than a length ahead, there is no rule to stop you closing a gap on the rails.
Report roggrain • January 27, 2024 9:50 AM GMT
The rule is more than a length clear it's ok. If the rule were changed as suggested by the OP

there would be a dozen infractions in every race. What gets my goat is when a rider on a horse that

is leading doesn't take the rail when it makes clear tactical sense to do so.

Like Pat Dobbs last year at Royal Ascot,  was it the King James race allowing the hot favourite to come through and win?
Report roggrain • January 27, 2024 9:58 AM GMT
Yes there's that aspect to it sparrow. Jockeys doing favours in return for favours.
Report sparrow • January 27, 2024 10:03 AM GMT
It was either last year or the one before and I had layed the favourite and couldn't believe that he would do that in a Royal Ascot race and give up a chance of winning. There again it was Dobbs!

Like a few have mentioned when it works in your favour its within the rules and good race riding Happy Just interested in peoples opinions on it. Some countries have  stricter rules on it.

Still waiting for Rico to confirm that the 2nd fav was checked in run costing it 1st place?
