One day he will give master classes on how to lose on the best horse. 12.55 Chepstow a great example.
Only the old public school boys club stops the criticism that this useless jockey deserves.

You or Nico?

I backed the winner so am happy that he was on the other one. My point is a general one not based on one race. Luckiest NH jockey ever that he got the gig he did.

MJK .... Exactly. I have racked my brain as to why Henderson keeps him. A few of his owners won't have him on but he still gets the lions share. I honestly feel if he was from the wrong side of the tracks he would get slaughtered by the media. However he is best mates with most of them.
Henderson should have a Top 5 jockey as his No.1 (like Barry G)... I wouldn't put Nico in the Top 50. Tactically he is clueless which is how he gets beat on so many favourites.
Report Newmarket-spurs • January 24, 2024 2:26 PM GMT
LoyalHoncho - do you think I'm talking about 1 race? I have never seen such an average to poor jockey manage to keep such a high profile job for so long. If he was so great then why doesn't hardly any other trainer use him in the big races when he is free? Reason is they know he is out of his depth.

Tiger Tiger - He rides so many odds on shots that I'm sure you can pull stats out that make him look good. Watch the races and see him get beat time and time again on the best horse in a close finish. Tactically he is completely clueless. Henderson should have a top 5 jockey as his number one. Are you telling me there isn't 5 better jockeys out there then NDB?
Report Newmarket-spurs • January 24, 2024 2:53 PM GMT
Hayden - It does in this case. I think its blind loyalty. He is not the only trainer. Sir Henry Cecil employed a few which weren't great. Queally was out of his depth to name one. Quinn and Ted D to name two more.
Do you not think that Henderson should have a Top 5 jockey? Is Nico Top 5? serious question.

He's 15 winners at the Cheltenham Festival, been top jockey there once, he's been trusted on Altior, Shiskin, Sprinter Sacre and more, not bad for an ex stable jockey who's University intention was to become a politician!

Been watching racing since childhood since my teens Newmarket but still wouldn't consider myself qualified to comment with confidence , too subjective in my mind in that their standards can differ from ride to ride similar to other walks of life.

Feel comfortable offering negative comments on particular rides on rare occasions but not on a jockey in general terms.

Not trying to steal Tiger's thunder but had time on my hands and came up with this..

Paul Townend has a strike rate of 47.88% on favs since 23/03/2008, take out those that won last time or had no previous form and this drops to 40.79%.

Away from favourites, he shows an overall loss on all rides covering the last 15 years with a strike rate of 10.28% and an overall loss of 158.39 points at BFSP.

Between 2008 and 2023 there were more losing years than winning ones (9L v 7W).

To date this year his strike rate on non-favs is 42.86% (3 wins from 7 rides) and a profit of 7.30 points at BFSP.

Interestingly (or maybe not) all seven of those rides on non-favs this year were for Willie Mullins.

All just about above average for me ie Kneeko, Cobden and Townend.

They get the job done and ok given the ammo at their disposal but certainly not anything special like McCoy or Ruby.

Kind of think Jack Kennendy could still be top class but I dunno…you still get goofy rides now and then from him. But u put a gun to my head to pick one I’d go him.

What you're trying to compare is like comparing a goalscorer in the Premier league to one a couple of divisions down. Townend rides against far better jockeys every day and Irish racing is a higher level. You do see that don't you? Rarely comment on anything you post MJK as you are impossible to reason with, in the case of Nico and the class of jockeys V Townend it makes little difference without comparing the class of horses they ride. The stats are even more telling when that comparison is factored in to include e.g small fields in Ireland and odds on favs Townend rides?

You're blindly spouting stats but how can they compare when they're from different Countries. As I asked is a jockey from India better than Dettori or Moore if he has better stats from a different Country? That's what your basically saying.

Report CagliariG • January 26, 2024 3:18 PM GMT
There is no sensible question to answer, you keep moving the goalposts when in fact all we are saying is that Nico is a good jockey and far from useless as alleged by the pocket talkers!!
Report MJK • January 26, 2024 3:41 PM GMT
And you're using stats to say he's a better jockey than Townend to be fair. Is a striker in Malta better than Harry Kane because he has better stats? Or do we use ourceyes to know better? The vast majority of NH jockeys riding in the UK are very average imop, and I would put NDB in that grouping. Some are shockingly below that level. Now it maybe unfair to judge by comparing them to past jockeys but that's something that happens and can't be helped.
Report CagliariG • January 26, 2024 3:51 PM GMT
At no point have I said one is better than the other MJK, you are proving you are a pocket talker who cannot accept defeat despite the stats of the posts proving you are in a minority of 2 with the OP who had the sense to hide.

Btw stats are only records that change the next time an event alters them which is why I never use them in punting, as for your opinion on jockeys I would wager that the majority could adapt to your job whatever it might be, quicker than you could learn the end with the tail is not the one to feed carrots.
Report MJK • January 26, 2024 4:24 PM GMT
How is it 'pocket talking' if I rarely bet the bloke? You're assumption that I know nothing about horses leads me to believe you think you know everything? Sounds like the usual 'what do you know about horses' when someone complains. Or a bitter ex jockey type. If you had your life savings and you had to put it on one of those jockeys in a two horse race, both horses equal, who would you put it on? Ps, why do you refer to the amount of posters on this thread? More stats, you seem to be obsessed with them. Do you think that makes you right? Take your time answering these questions if you can see them from your Ivory Tower looking down on this pleb.
Report CagliariG • January 26, 2024 4:32 PM GMT
