was mile better than Brennan still there though...

He's always been no better than average. Some on here called him the best jump jockey out there. You've got to laugh. The Queally of the jumps.

Nico on a rules debutant beaten by a past C and D winner and Nico is a dolt?! And who took the 11/8 about this?
You or Nico? |
|
By:
I backed the winner so am happy that he was on the other one. My point is a general one not based on one race. Luckiest NH jockey ever that he got the gig he did.

MJK .... Exactly. I have racked my brain as to why Henderson keeps him. A few of his owners won't have him on but he still gets the lions share. I honestly feel if he was from the wrong side of the tracks he would get slaughtered by the media. However he is best mates with most of them.
Henderson should have a Top 5 jockey as his No.1 (like Barry G)... I wouldn't put Nico in the Top 50. Tactically he is clueless which is how he gets beat on so many favourites. |
|
By:
LoyalHoncho - do you think I'm talking about 1 race? I have never seen such an average to poor jockey manage to keep such a high profile job for so long. If he was so great then why doesn't hardly any other trainer use him in the big races when he is free? Reason is they know he is out of his depth.

By:
Nico has a strike rate of better than 41% on favs, take away those that won last time or no previous form out and this improves to 44%,
|

Looks dreadful at a fence or hurdle and not very good in a finish, him being posh boy probably helps him keep the Job..
I can’t get my head round why he is in front of Mark Walsh on the big occasion…..strange tbf |
|
By:
Guess that makes Henderson a poor judge of jockey then
|
|
By:
They get attached to favourites Hayden, they can do no wrong….
Havlin - Gosden….. |
|
By:
Tiger Tiger - He rides so many odds on shots that I'm sure you can pull stats out that make him look good. Watch the races and see him get beat time and time again on the best horse in a close finish. Tactically he is completely clueless. Henderson should have a top 5 jockey as his number one. Are you telling me there isn't 5 better jockeys out there then NDB?
|
|
By:
Hayden - It does in this case. I think its blind loyalty. He is not the only trainer. Sir Henry Cecil employed a few which weren't great. Queally was out of his depth to name one. Quinn and Ted D to name two more.
Do you not think that Henderson should have a Top 5 jockey? Is Nico Top 5? serious question. |
|
By:
If you 'know' that he is an overrated jockey, than surely you have a nice edge to exploit there?
Especially considering the price his mounts tend to start at given who trains them. |
|
By:
Quinn out of his depth….good god !
|
|
By:
Yes probably correct , remember everyone slagging McGlone but Cecil loved him.
|
|
By:
He's not my favourite jockey, but if there were 5 better than him out there then I would think NJH would know. His record on those evens or less is a strike rate of 65% and shows a profit over the years.
He's 15 winners at the Cheltenham Festival, been top jockey there once, he's been trusted on Altior, Shiskin, Sprinter Sacre and more, not bad for an ex stable jockey who's University intention was to become a politician! |
|
By:
The list is endless Hayden …
|
|
By:
May even be 16 Cheltenham winners?
|
|

Not a combination i can ever get right, you can see and hear it in their interviews what they think of punters, must run a fairly tight ship as some of them attract no money at all and run well.

Been watching racing since childhood since my teens Newmarket but still wouldn't consider myself qualified to comment with confidence , too subjective in my mind in that their standards can differ from ride to ride similar to other walks of life.
Feel comfortable offering negative comments on particular rides on rare occasions but not on a jockey in general terms. |

The have no time for the fodder…..fact !

Away from favourites, he shows an overall profit on all rides covering the last 15 years with a strike rate of better than 21% and an overall profit of more than 600 points at Bfsp with more profitable years than losing ones (last year 67 points profit to Bfsp)

I think I can safely trust Nicky Henderson to know a bit more about the merits of jockeys than the the OP.

Not only is Nico de B a first class jockey he is also an absolute gentleman.

Solid as a rock is Nico and how often to you see him get stick on here?....Very very rarely and that says it all really.

The only bollox being spoken is from the usual suspects who attack jockeys daily because they cant handle being skint two bob punters that will blame anything but their own poor judgement!! imvho
|
|
By:
A perfect example of Nico's excellence is how he has transformed an ordinary horse into a useful one. Constitution hill.
I think he deserves way more credit than he gets. Henderson would not keep him if he was not the best |

Henderson put up with Fitzgerald for far too long.
What a difference Geraghty made when he got on them. Same scenerio with Nico and James Bowen now. No fool like an old fool. |

Henderson must be a judge as Robbie Dunne is riding for him

Not trying to steal Tiger's thunder but had time on my hands and came up with this..
Paul Townend has a strike rate of 47.88% on favs since 23/03/2008, take out those that won last time or had no previous form and this drops to 40.79%. Away from favourites, he shows an overall loss on all rides covering the last 15 years with a strike rate of 10.28% and an overall loss of 158.39 points at BFSP. Between 2008 and 2023 there were more losing years than winning ones (9L v 7W). To date this year his strike rate on non-favs is 42.86% (3 wins from 7 rides) and a profit of 7.30 points at BFSP. Interestingly (or maybe not) all seven of those rides on non-favs this year were for Willie Mullins. |

Thanks T2R

The big difference between the stats I would think is that the favs Townend rides are a lot shorter odds (majority odds on) than Nico?
Not that it matters but it tends to make the attackers look stupid contrary to them telling supporters they are talking bollox? Btw T2R, cracking winner in the compy WD. |

Anyone who thinks Bournville is anywhere near the level of someone like Townend as a jockey is talking even more of that stuff...

You need the AE to compare the jockeys, not strike rates
