Re Raffingora,is that The Brianstan in the pic on this side?

One had almost come to expect the impossible from Raffingora by this time, but his performance in his next race, the King George Stakes at Goodwood, left even his most ardent admirers speechless. Set the apparently impossible task of giving 15 lb more than weight for age to those very smart three-year-olds The Brianstan and Realm, Raffingora not only won but won easily! He was moving particularly well at halfway, where he was tucked in behind Realm, The Brianstan and the only other runner, Pisces.
He did not challenge until well inside the final furlong where Piggott let out a little rein and Raffingora burst past The Brianstan in a few strides. On paper this was not only the finest performance of Raffingora's career, but also the best performance by any sprinter in this country for many years. The Brianstan received an 18 lb beating, Realm a 19 lb beating and the filly Pisces a 29 lb beating. We say on paper because we believe that Raffingora's chance was helped by the way in which the race was run. After racing each other hell for leather from the start, The Brianstan and Realm were 'pumped out' as they entered the final furlong and had nothing left to resist Raffingora in the closing stages. This is not to detract in any way from the magnificence of Raffingora's victory. It was, for us, one of the highlights of the season.

Recognised Stan Powells colours and then looked to see what other sprinters were about and guessed Realm as was thinking of Huntercombe but think they were lighter colours.

Ronnie,

Bishop Auckland remembers me of one of my favourite trainers - W.A. Stephenson. I still can`t get over what happened to The Grey Bomber all those years ago. I had a pile of ante-post vouchers on him at huge odds for the Triumph Hurdle. Tragic it was, Tragic. Sad

Stan Powell had quite a few horses called Stan. Now, it was a long long time ago and he wasn`t a top owner with class performers but I recall his colours being something like, White, Light Green sleeves and Star on chest? Notsure about cap, but maybe Light Green too? Blackbarn would know for sure.

Would The Brianstan and Le Johnstan be the best he had?

Racehorse owner "Stan" Powell dies aged 76

Stanley Powell, who enjoyed considerable success as an owner with a number of trainers, particularly John Sutcliffe jnr, has died at the age of 76 after a short illness.

Powell was best known for his Flat horses, most notably The Brianstan (1972 Wokingham winner), Le Johnstan and The Adrianstan (1979 Victoria Cup winner).

He also owned several notable jumpers, including Zuko, ante-post favourite for the 1990 Grand National before being injured, Jugador, The Tista and Veremente.

Although he had cut back on his racing interests in recent years, Powell had two horses in training with John Jenkins, one of whom was Lively Lady, a winner three times last term.

Sutcliffe led the tributes, saying: "Stan was a great little guy. I met him in the late 1960s and we had a lot of luck together with the 'stan' horses. He was far more than an owner - he was a great mate."

Stan Mellor, the trainer of Zuko, said: "Stan was a most cheerful person and was always cheering everybody up."

Powell, who lived in Alton, Hampshire, had a business exporting goods to Africa. He was also head of Southern Air, which is based in Sussex.

He was one of only three RAF servicemen to receive the Military Cross during World War II after escaping from the prisoner-of-war camp Stalag 4B on the German-Polish border at his sixth attempt. His father, also Stanley, had won the MC during World War I.

Powell leaves a widow, Jean, and a daughter, Dupe. A private funeral will take place on Tuesday, with plans for a memorial service at the RAF church in London in early April.

Le Garcon D'Or trainer Jack Ormston dies.

JACK ORMSTON, the former Yorkshire trainer who sent out the hugely popular Le Garcon D'Or to win a record number of Flat races, has died aged 97. Ormston, who turned to horseracing after a career in speedway, passed away on Friday in the Darlington nursing home where he lived with wife Jean.

In a 30-year training career that ended with his retirement in 1975, Ormston sent out numerous major handicap winners, but none of his horses achieved the regular success of Le Garcon D'Or, the exceptionally tough and consistent sprinter who rewrote racing's record books. Foaled in 1958, the diminutive gelding won at least once every season from 1960 to 1972, with a peak tally of six wins as a ten-year-old. Fifteen of his victories were in sellers (he was also disqualified in one) and in the last of them, at Edinburgh in June 1972, the 14-year-old equaled High Stakes's 20th-century British Flat record of 34 wins.

There was little chance of the popular 'Golden Boy' changing hands at the subsequent auction, as the auctioneer said firmly: "I have the doubtful distinction of offering Le Garcon D'Or for sale - but I'm sure no-one is going to bid for him, so before I send him out of the ring, give him another big cheer."

Born in Cornforth, County Durham, on October 30, 1909, John Glaholme Ormston was a speedway rider before the war but horses were always his first love. He took part in amateur steeplechases and his school-friend Willie Stephenson encouraged him to make a career in racing, which he did when starting training at Lane Head Stables, Hutton Magna, near Richmond, in 1945. His first winner was Shareholder at Catterick in December that year.

Reminiscence gave Ormston his biggest success when landing the 1953 Portland Handicap, while he also took the Ayrshire Handicap with Criticism in 1955, the Scottish & Newcastle Breweries' Handicap with Manfilia in 1971 and the Rufford Abbey Handicap with Mr McMandyin 1974.

Ormston's most influential horse was Lundy Princess, who looked only moderate when winning at Lanark and Carlisle in 1963 but became the granddam of 1975 Derby Winner Grundy.

Paying tribute to Ormston, retired trainer Denys Smith said: "Jack was not only a terrific trainer, but a very clever one as well. He certainly knew how to train winners and to make it pay."He and his jockey Alec Russell were a great combination and, when the money was down, that was it". "Training and placing Le Garcon D'Or to win so many races was a marvelous effort".

Ormston is survived by wife Jean, son John, and daughter Liz. Another son, Christopher, died in a freak riding accident in Australia in 1968.

Alec Russell was a legend of the North. Born in Middlesbrough I think. Here is a few newspaper clips from a bygone age which you may find interesting.
