Ten O'Clock, 1pt EW @ 13-2, 1.57 Lingfield (3 PLACES) A couple of the main firms are offering three places on this race and I'm going to take a chance that Ten O'Clock can at least make the frame. She didn't offer much in three qualifying runs on turf and reappeared at Wolverhampton (5f) last month with an official rating of just 40, however, she didn't look an entirely hopeless case there, and although she didn't see her race out as well as today's favourite Unavailable, she didn't finish too far behind that race-fit rival who had a clear run down the centre of the track in the home straight. The first and second from that race have won since. Ten O'clock's pedigree could suggest longer trips may suit better than this easy 5f, but she didn't look devoid of pace whilst racing a bit keenly at Wolverhampton, and hopefully that first start for five months has sharpened her up. |
|
By:
Ten O'clock wasn't done any favours when squeezed out at the start but in a weak race was able to recover and make a challenge inside the final furlong, however, she ended up down on the inside against a rival who was challenging down the centre, and as tends to be the way at Lingfield, the centre runner prevailed.

Ace, can't say I was impressed when she ended up next to the dead-rail, but yes, tend to agree with that, without knowing how her actual / expected stats compare to Hollie's.
Don't know if I'll be selecting Ten O'clock again for this but there should be a similarly poor contest in her. |

Tees Douge, 1pt EW @ 28-1, 7.00 Newcastle
Adrain Nicholls has had a few run well on their reappearances recently, notably Hurt You Never who won at 33-1 here, and with that in mind I'm going to take a chance on Tees Douge's fitness on his return from nearly five months off. He shaped with promise in last season's Brocklesby, so it was disappointing that he didn't manage to win after, though did make the frame on a couple of occasions including when well backed at Catterick (5f, good) in July, where he finished 3rd of 14. It has to be said that he didn't look the most straightforward on occasions, so it remains to be seen which way he goes this year. Tees Douge makes his AW debut here and is related to winners on synthetics, including Bear Faced, who was useful when trained by Sir Mark Prescott, and at a lower level, Munificent, a three-time winner on Tapeta at Wolverhampton. Tees Douge is eligible for weaker races than this one, and being drawn in one might not help as he can be keen, but a chance is taken each-way at the prices given he looked as though he could win races last season, and with his yard having started the year in reasonable form. |
|
By:
Had a shocker there, Tees Douge has run on Tapeta previously, when finishing second at Southwell on his second start, to the ill-fated Yorkshire Terrier, who would go on to bolt over the same C/D under a penalty. Back in 4th was the now 98-rated Sommelier, who had an excuse as he finished the race lame.

Tees Douge was well backed close to the off, and was another one from his yard to run well off a break, but had to settle for third place.

Logistical, 1pt EW @ 33-1, 8.00 Kempton
I'm going to have a speculative each-way pick on Logistical, who was initially rated 13lb higher when he made his handicap debut over C/D in January last year, when finishing a close-up third of five, when perhaps he didn't have the smoothest of trips. Following one more run for the Andrew Balding yard at Wolverhampton in a higher grade when again he didn't have the kindest of trips, he was moved on. A juvenile hurdling campaign followed for Tom Lacey, a discipline he never really convinced at or looked enthusiastic for, though he did run okay on a couple of occasions. Following a 100-day break he's had a couple of runs for Simon Hodgson back on the AW, and he was a little better last time here over 11f, when he was rushed up early to take a prominent position and he probably paid the price for that inside the final furlong. He did finish behind Mr Boson then, who himself was ridden handily before fading, but Logistical is a much bigger price here. Logistical steps back up to 12f this evening with cheekpieces reapplied, and while he is eligible for weaker races than this one, a chance is taken at the prices, with those two more recent runs, which might have been needed, hopefully having advanced his fitness. |

GL George, Logistical's last speed figure at the track puts him well in the mix from those that have run at the course. I've speculatively gone for Militry Decoration who has my 2 best ratings at the track, albeit over further. Trainer not doing much but don't mind the claiming jockey. Hoping for a good pace set up...

yes saddo, not complaining but one hitting the bullseye would be nice!
If that was stable money for the one last night, I did wonder why they didn't put Mia up with her valuable 7lb claim; that said, he does look a tricky ride, so maybe that's why they opted for a fully-fledged jock, and they're probably trying to save Mia's claim for when the turf starts. |

Just over 2L covered the first seven home, Cobs, but surprisingly still a quicker time than the other division. Have to wonder about the form when they finish in a heap like that, but suppose Logistical is at least eligible for weaker races.

Beauen Arrows, 1pt EW @ 9-1, 5.00 Kempton (4 PLACES)
I'm going to take a chance on Beauen Arrows, who's making a quick reappearance following a down-the-field run over 6f here on Sunday evening. He's a sixteen-race maiden, but showed enough over C/D in the first half of last year when making the frame three times in novice / handicap company, including when finishing third in a 0-71 behind a couple who would win subsequently, to suggest that there should be a victory in him. Beauen Arrows hasn't been in much form in three starts back following a 160-day break which has seen his official rating fall to 50, but the runs might have been needed, and this drop into a 0-50 classified stakes may help him be more competitive again. The draw hasn't been kind but granted a reasonable trip, an improved showing wouldn't surprise. Natacata, 1pt EW @ 15-2, 8.30 Kempton Natacata hasn't had many chances at two miles, and her latest attempt at the trip which came when finishing second at Chelmsford last month, probably wanted marking up based on how the race panned out in a contest where the runners finished well strung out, and she fared best of the prominent racers, doing well in the circumstances considering she'd been keen enough. The winner, Man Of Riddles, who probably benefited from the honest pace of that race, reopposes here on just 1lb worse terms, but hopefully a more efficient trip can see Natacata reverse the form. The selection has failed to place in three previous starta at Kempton, but those runs were over 7f when trained by Sir Mark Prescott and qualifying for a mark. She has previously made the frame at Beverley, so she should be fine going right-handed. |
|
By:
GL George, I've got Natacata 2nd in based on his Newc run over 2m in Oct, must have every chance. I'm hoping Legacy Power will be suited by the step up in trip back at Kemp after being badly hampered last time, but not much of a price with the stamina risk

Well done with Legacy Power, Cobs
Beauen Arrows did return to form but unfortunately ran into a well backed Mick Appleby-trained stable switcher. Natacata didn't settle even with cover, then made a move three-wide on the home bend over 3f out, and didn't see her race out, fading out of the places inside the final furlong. 2024 Running P/L: +24.6 pts |

Thanks George. Longer trip, run of the race (and the application of cash!) saw an improved performance. Bad luck with Beauen Arrows. Doubt I'll have much for Newc this evening. It's the one AW track I've never got to grips with tbh. GL today

Good luck Cobs
Kapparis Kid, 1pt EW @ 22-1, 5.30 Newcaste I'm going to give another chance to Kapparis Kid, who had created a good impression when winning on his AW debut at Chelmsford (6f) in December, on what was his second start for John Ryan, when he sustained his effort from off the pace to defeat a debutante, who has won her two starts since. I selected Kapparis Kid at Kempton (6f) when he returned to action off a 54-day break, and he was disappointing, failing to pick up from off the pace and finishing last of the six runners. He was a bit better on his latest start at Lingfield when stepped up to mile, when keeping on from off a steady pace to finish 4th of the five runners and beaten just two lengths. He clearly has a bit to prove now, but I just wonder if he's actually needed a couple of runs back following his break, and interesting to see if he can fare better switched to Tapeta and trying 7f on a stiffer track. |
|
By:
Kapparis Kid could only finish 5th of the 8 runners, and while he might have been at a disadvantage being caught towards the far side from his draw in 1, it looked a pretty ordinary effort even allowing for that. He will be eligible for a slightly lower grade from the weekend, and a return to Polytrack may help, but as things stand not one of my better notebook projects.

Gordon Grey, 1pt EW @ 33-1, 7.00 Wolverhampton
I'm going to give another chance to Gordon Grey, who posted a couple of respectable efforts at Newmarket (10f, g-s) and Newbury (12f, good) last summer when he recorded RPRs of 81 and 78 respectively. He wasn't at the same level on his final two starts for Ian Williams, when soft ground might not have been ideal, though he wasn't disgraced on the former occasion at Nottingham in one of the Grassroots Series' Finals. Gordon Grey has had three runs on the AW this year for his new yard, two at Southwell where he had an excuse on the first occasion over 14f when badly impeded inside the final furlong, and then he was a fair third over 12f in a higher grade than this evening's. He disappointed on his latest start when stepped up to two miles at Lingfield, but it was his third quickish run back and the trip might have stretched him. He's down in grade and trip this evening, and hopefully has been freshened up by a five-week break, for a trainer who enjoyed his first winner of the year yesterday, which was also ridden like the selection, by Jack Gilligan. Signor Ferrari, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 7.15 Dundalk The Joseph O'Brien-trained Western City may prove to be different class to these, but I'm going to take a chance on Signor Ferrari, who didn't get the clearest of runs here over a mile on his penultimate start, and last time over 7f, stuck to his task well having been on a disputed pace and, although no match for the winner, wasn't beaten far for second place. He does have his stamina to prove upped in distance to 10.5f, but it looks worth exploring, and this may not become a true test at the trip anyway with just the five runners and the others having their stamina to prove too. Black Smoke, 1pt EW @ 10-1, 7.30 Wolverhamton (4 PLACES) Black Smoke was another who wasn't at his best last time at Lingfield, but prior to that had been running well here over 12 and tonight's trip of 14f, a distance he's only had two previous chances at. He was beaten just over a length by Taxiing on his penulatimate start and now has a 5lb pull at the weights. He has a wide draw and wouldn't want a tactical contest, but granted a reasonable trip, hopefully he can put in a better effort returned to this venue. |

A couple of second places with Gordon Grey (backed into 12-1) and Signor Ferrari (drifted to 28-1) both filling that position, but alas, as the punting gods decree, there always has to be at least one lets you down, and Black Smoke, who got across from his wide draw to lead, didn't settle and weakened tamely out of it. 2024 Running P/L: +32.2 pts |

Pinpoint, 1pt EW @ 9-1, 7.00 Wolverhampton
Pinpoint has shaped okay on both his starts for his new yard over 5f at Newcastle, including last time on his return from a 3-month break and gelding operation, when he had plenty of use made of him and led until over a furlong out before weakening, perhaps just in need of the run. The main concern here is that he may find this 0-74 opposition too strong being rated 59 and eligible for weaker races, but he's not had many chances at 5f or on the AW and gets the vote at the prices, with that recent reappearance behind him and a first-time hood applied. Sax Appeal, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 8.30 Wolverhampton (3 PLACES) Sax Appeal was in good form at Southwell (11f) early last year when readily winning a novice, and then under a penalty, being one of three to pull well clear in another novice which was run in a time over three seconds quicker than the class 5 handicap over the same trip on the card. He was then absent for ten months, and two runs back at Kempton (12f) haven't been great but he was a bit better last time when he ended up being caught wide from over 3f out. Sax Appeal clearly has a bit to prove now, but hopefully he's benefited from those two comeback runs and this return to a left-handed track back on Tapeta can show him in a better light, while this slight drop in grade may also help. |
