Hibby, I think the racing parlance for that is 'third run for a mark'.

I'll have a look later to see if the stewards had him in for a R & R enq.

It usually takes a while for the R & R enq reports to appear but they're saying on SSR that Winn got 18 days.

18 days. So what. Give the horse a mark of 80 that might stop it.

Can't comment on the race but did the trainer also get done? Or is it a case of the jockey taking all the blame and apparently taking it upon himself to do this?

oh dear, what have we here...

"however O’Meara himself expressed dissatisfaction with the ride given by Winn, explaining that he believed AL MUQDAD could and should have been ridden more vigorously in the home straight"

Report in full:

An enquiry was held into the running and riding of AL MUQDAD ridden by Mark Winn and trained by David O’Meara, which was restrained leaving the stalls and settled at the rear of the field where it travelled strongly before appearing to be very tenderly handled in the home straight until the final strides, to finish fourth beaten by 2 lengths. Winn and O’Meara’s representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and evidence was also taken from Mr O’Meara via telephone. The Veterinary Officer performed two post-race examinations of AL MUQDAD, which was selected for routine testing, and had nothing to report. Winn stated that his instructions were to drop the gelding out early to help ensure he settled as AL MUQDAD has been very keen on the gallops at home and to hunt away and keep it simple. Winn explained that he was satisfied with his early pitch down the inner at the rear of the field and the gelding had switched off with cover chasing an even pace. Winn indicated that approaching the home turn he had been squeezing AL MUQDAD along with his legs and when the leaders fanned very wide on straightening he obtained clear running. From this point Winn considered that AL MUQDAD had every opportunity to obtain its best possible placing as the gelding was giving maximum effort under his hands and heels riding and he did not feel it prudent to resort to the whip at any point. O’Meara’s representative confirmed the instructions and that the ride had accorded with them through the first half of the race, however O’Meara himself expressed dissatisfaction with the ride given by Winn, explaining that he believed AL MUQDAD could and should have been ridden more vigorously in the home straight. Winn was suspended for 18 days for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure that AL MUQDAD was given full opportunity to obtain the best possible placing, in that he had failed to demonstrate any sustained period of timely, real and substantial effort at a crucial stage of the race, when there was always clear opportunity for him to do so.
Report swiftynifty • January 15, 2024 9:37 PM GMT
So did Winn get his riding orders from the owner then?
Report MJK • January 15, 2024 9:43 PM GMT
As I thought. That seems to be the norm now. Take the blame if it goes wrong and you'll be looked after going forward.
Report GEORGE.B • January 15, 2024 9:45 PM GMT
It does seem to be the way that a trainer can point the finger at the jockey and by doing so exonerate himself of any blame.

There was the day at Lingfield, for example, when Rohaan's effort appeared delayed and Dave Evans said he wasn't happy with the ride, which meant Darragh Keenan took sole blame and a ban.

well done the stewards for giving WINN an 18 day ban imv...

but as a few on here are saying...

trainers seem to walk away from these things without any punishment at all...

if the trainer here is unhappy with the ride then i would presume he will not be giving WINN any more rides...

You see rides like the hapless Winn gives in virtually every race, non jiggers and deliberate poor rides are what is killing the sport. Much easier for corrupt connections to lay their horses with a guaranteed return, than backing and getting beaten on the day. Simples really, so easy to for connections to cheat and fill their pockets.
Report MJK • January 17, 2024 4:33 PM GMT

I have been saying this for years! Betting exchanges are a breeding ground for cheating , fiddling & dishonest practices.
A great idea in principle , but so open to corruption and manipulation .
Ban all betting exchanges and it will no doubt help keep racing alive for the average punter.
There has always been cheating in racing , but the exchanges have taken it to an unbelievable new level.

it's made cheating more transparent...

if the authorities give a fk about checking things out thoroughly...

which of course they don't...

coz they want to play the 'racing is 99.99% straight' game.

We were told Betfair would provide the paper trail that would stamp out skulduggery in racing.

As there are now so very few convictions we must assume the game has never been so clean.

i think Betfair provides what it's asked to provide tbh swifty...

if the authorities don't ask they don't get...

that's how it appears to work to me at least...

problem is i doubt the folk who are supposed to be watching things at the BHA could tell the difference between a big drift and a bowl of cornflakes.
