Has been on BBC4 last couple of nights but if interested can watch on BBC i player. For me this was the best mystery/drama/story ever shown on TV. If you haven't seen it you'll either love it or hate it. Dennis Potters' finest work imo and the most wonderful performance from the sadly recently deceased Michael Gambon. Features many of Britains finest actors and Actresses, inc Alison Steadman, Janet Suzman, a gorgeous young Joanne Whalley, Patrick Malahide, Jim Carter, Imelda Staunton etc, etc. It's funny, sad, odd and a complete mystery, believe it's only been shown twice in 37 years, tricky to understand at first as 3 interwoven stories unfold and interspersed with lovely old time songs, simply the best imo.
Yes stewarts, very good indeed. Thanks for the shout. Hadn`t seen it since first aired in 1986 (Where have all the years gone?). Think it was Joanne Whalley`s first big acting break. Couldn`t believe she is 62 now! Pennies From Heaven was another Potter classic. Think it was Bob Hoskin`s big break but my memory may be playing tricks on me.

Didn't really enjoy Blackeyes, thought it promised more than it delivered but this is fairly similar to Pennies From Heaven but more complex and intriguing.

I remember when Dennis Potter died but shocked how long ago it was. 39 years! Not only a great playwright but also a decent human being. Done loads for charities and good causes.

The Singing Detective is one of my all time favourite drama's. I was working in Holland and one of the episodes was on tv in the hotel where I stayed, it was in the Dutch language and I was wondering if they managed to replicate the Forest Of Dean accent which was a very important part of the drama. I don't speak Dutch so I couldn't tell.

The poem ain't bad either......Blue Remembered Hills
Into my heart an air that kills From yon far country blows: What are those blue remembered hills, What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content, I see it shining plain, The happy highways where I went And cannot come again.
A.E. Housman

Thanks for the (Heads Up) Billy, expect there were a few **** crowing in that, will try to watch on Catch up when i find time. Have watched the 1st 3 episodes of TSD now and just as mesmerised as i ever was by the Screenplay, direction, musical fantasy themes and superb acting as when i first watched it in 86. The two really old blokes in hospital are brilliantly played and both long deceased now. What really gets my goat though is that the current BBC rulers have put this hidden away on BBC4 at 12.00 at night, 3 episodes at a time, when it really should be on prime time BBC1 at 9.00, and it's hidden due to the vile wokeness of the current BBC hierarchy who won't show Britain as it was with the use of words such as P@ki, N1g N0g, etc totally missing the point that Marlowe and Ali are really good pals taking the p1ss out of each other and the young Doctor who asks Ali if Marlowe is bothering him and being racist too him as they are both laughing their heads off at him. If you haven't read "The Fiction Factory" or "Brainwashing Britain" by David Sedgwick which are a good few years old now, you'll not understand how extreme the current BBC have become. Don't recall "Blue remembered hills" but will try to find it somewhere, thanks.

I had a mate at the council who's Dad used to bring Viagra type tablets back from a part of India, he said every one in the pub was taking them. My mate said they were great and offered me a couple but I didn't have a go.

sparrow, you are of a similar age to me, i think you may be a few years older, and like me you remember when the BBC (Aunty), in those days was revered for it's News coverage and great shows, entertainment, documentaries, and Dramas like this one, a masterpiece of work as many would agree, but that was made in 86. Todays BBC is different and yes they have shown it again but on BBC4 in the middle of the night when most people are asleep and this is only the 2nd repeat showing of this Drama in 37 years. They do this to make their left/right bias appear to show that they show programs like this which reflect how times were, so as to massage their figures to the watchdogs. I know you think i'm anti BBC but i'm not really, they still make some great dramas such as Line Of Duty but their wokeness affects everything they do. Those books i mentioned are by an author, university lecturer and theatre critic and are basically a statistical analysis of the BBCs output through all of it's mediums and it's coverage or non coverage of major news stories such as the Asian rape gangs in northern british towns like Rotherham and Rochdale, it is a very disturbing read. You're an intelligent man sparrow, try and find a copy if you can then see what you think.

I know the BBC has its faults but still the vast majority of my viewing will be on their channels. I don't want to get into the politics of it all as we will always agree to disagree on that side of the matter.
