Patrick having words

the whole things ridiculous.  when have you ever heard the jockey on the winner jump off and then tell a TV crew that went quite well except the jockey on the runner-up didn't do what i instructed him to do before the race.

This whole episode can only ramp up the pressure to restrict trainers multiple entries imo and not before time.

Makes you wonder if Walsh gave Townsend same instructions on fact to file

Mullins camp have previous on these issues: :) Willie Mullins blamed jockey error for the moment that allowed Honeysuckle to make her winning move up the rail and claim the Close Brothers Mares' Hurdle at the expense of his odds-on shot Benie Des Dieux.

Robbie Power, on board the Mullins-trained Stormy Ireland, left a gap on his inside as they turned for home, which Rachael Blackmore capitalised on to surge to the front on Honeysuckle.

Benie Des Dieux, out wide, was unable to bridge the gap under Paul Townend and went down by half a length. Mullins told Racing TV: "I just think it was miscommunication turning for home. Maybe Robbie thought one of our horses was behind him rather than Honeysuckle. It looked like he just gifted the winner a huge gap while Paul was going on the outside."

It is vital that racing has the appearance of being fair. This stinks worse than a 3-week-old kebab.

Not exactly riding these horses to obtain their best possible position are they?

The video after the line is well worth a watch It needs to be shown.

Ffs acey the video is why this thread exists.
It would have actually looked good for racing with Danny trying to get up the inside of a better fancied stable mate.

The fact that Patrick behaved like a bitch about it is what brought people's attention to the team tactics and has thrown racing into disrepute.

I hope Nick Luck or I.T.V Racing highlight it that is what i am saying.

Not one iota of a chance of the gravy train rocking the boat

Nick luck is pretty good.

No he ain’t they have bills to pay…..

It was discussed on Sky Racing this morning.

What did they say about it Saxon?

I would also think that how to ride GW has been a pet project of Patrick's this winter and the discussions would have been also within the household . So the running over a distance short of his optimum (shouldnt finish tired and jump right ) , taking fences without any distractions all may have played a part .Probably explains how upset he was , but if Danny thought he could win ....

Wonder what time Patrick wants the pubs to close tonight? He must be in total charge of everything.

strontium
The gist of it was that Patrick probably regrets his utterances being made in public.

Thank you Saxon.

This amateur jockey seems to be of great importance in Ireland or at least thinks he is.

GAA players are also amateur, top ones have all got nice motors ...

Rules for amateurs in Ireland, I don't know how many races an Amateur can ride against professionals in UK.
Patrick must be near the top of the limit every year in Ireland. He is an amateur in name only

Qualified Riders may ride as follows:
(a) Category A1; In Irish National Hunt Flat Races and in
flat races in which riders Qualified under
Rule 124(ii) are permitted to ride.
Category A2; In Point to Point Steeplechases only.
Category A3; In Irish National Hunt Flat Races, Point to

permitted to ride.
(b) Category B; In races specified in paragraph (a) above

Qualified Riders.
(c) Category C; In races specified in paragraphs (a) and

He felt his horse was lugging to the right through the race and didn't want to do Danny if he came up there at the second last, absolute storm in a tea cup.

Oh dear ^

Go with the pile on so..

Patrick seems a very caring person after all.

This is the sport of horse-racing not a benefit for the Mullins clan
Jockeys should not be telling opposition jockeys how to ride their races.

Patrick is hoisted by his own petard by admitting he told Danny Mullins not to come up his inside at the 2nd last and compounded it with his actions after the winning post and after the 2nd last by riding his mount to push Danny off the course.

This is a clear breach of rules end of, he was angry because Danny didn't follow his instructions during the race.

Danny has gained a reputation for giving everything a ride, which is backed up by the number of times he's ridden 3rd 4th fancied horses to win at nice prices from the Mullins stable, after all he's the professional here not Patrick.

People need to remember if we don't bet on this product it dies, racing only exists because of the betting if this nonsense continues forget about animal rights killing the game we the punter will kill it by not betting on self-entitled millionaires running races for their own benefit.

Very true, trevor. Really surprised at some people on here making excuses for his behaviour.

Think Barry Geraghty made the best comment on this when he said if the leader had've been allowed a few lengths clear at the second last none of this would have occurred

Why best comment? The best comment surely is no jockey tells another what to do

Because it makes the most sense. He said if he'd have been on the horse he would've made sure he was a few lengths clear before the second last so jumping to the right wouldn't have made a difference to the result.

He didn't have to make sure it was clear as he thought he had made it clear to Danny in the pre race orders.

Willie Mullins questions need for investigation over 'storm in a teacup' family spat at Limerick

Willie Mullins has questioned the need for comments made by his son Patrick in the aftermath of his spat with cousin Danny at Limerick on Thursday to be referred on for further investigation by the authorities.

The perennial champion amateur was seen animatedly admonishing Danny after he had won the Grade 1 Guinness Faugheen Novice Chase on Gaelic Warrior. Danny Mullins had been riding Il Etait Temps for the Closutton stable and made a move to go up Gaelic Warrior's inside after the odds-on favourite, who had American Mike outside him at the time, edged left off the bend as they turned to face the final two fences.

The winning rider subsequently told Racing TV that he had "told Danny going out that there will be a gap down my inside at the second-last, do not come for it. He hasn't listened to me. Luckily he hasn't got the two of us beat, but it didn't matter."

The perception of one rider dictating to another what to do in a race has led to many questioning the integrity of the situation, and the stewards on the day referred that aspect on to a senior official for further investigation.

Danny Mullins subsequently said on his Tote blog: "It's one of those things – I'm always going to ride to win the race. I had a go and unfortunately I finished second – we had a go, that was the main thing."

Speaking at Leopardstown on Friday, the trainer of the two horses played down the contretemps. "Lots of players say things to other players coming off the pitch and it never gets referred on. I don't know why this was," Mullins said. "It's a storm in a teacup as far as I'm concerned. Everyone's blood was up and it was probably Patrick's second most important ride over the Christmas period after Facile Vega. He was probably a bit disappointed because he was minding his Ps and Qs and gave him a brilliant ride, I thought, to win.

"Danny tried to win on his horse for his owner, he played the cards that he thought was best for him, that's about it. My two riders were doing their best and I'm sure American Mike was doing his best, and that was it. I didn't see anything wrong with it anyway."

He added: "I watched the race and I thought it was three top riders going down to the last two fences flat out, each one trying to win the race. I couldn't see anything wrong with it. The stewards looked at [the in-running incident] and saw nothing wrong with it either."

Ruby Walsh: believes his former weighroom colleagues could negotiate an increase in the riding fee
Ruby Walsh: "It's not a gallop in Closutton, it's a racecourse, every man for himself"
Credit: Patrick McCann (racingpost.com/photos)
Ruby Walsh later addressed the controversy in his role as a pundit on RTE television. He suggested he could relate to Patrick Mullins' direction to his cousin before the race, but he did not spare him for what unfolded thereafter.

"It's not a gallop in Closutton, it's a racecourse, every man for himself," Walsh said. "As regards what Patrick was saying, I know when I was riding Yorkhill I'd be lined up at the start and I'd say to the lads around me, 'This is going to go left, so you can line up on my inside if you want, but I will be going left because I'm not in control of it'.

"You would mark people's cards, but Danny was right – I wouldn't have listened to Patrick either. Go away! Do you think you own the place? I don't know how Patrick even thought he was going to listen to him. And, by the way, they are both Mullinses, so whatever you tell them, one was always going to do the opposite anyway! I mean he should have known his cousin better than he does."

When Barry Geraghty interjected that the Racing TV interview did not reflect well on Patrick, Walsh added: "And neither does Patrick's actions after the winning post. We were involved in plenty of incidents when we rode and you have to keep your temper under control. It's not always easy. I'm sure he regrets it, but you can't do that. He is champion amateur and he sets an example – it's not allowed."

Of course there's a case for Patrick Mullins to answer for. He cannot go around instructing or ordering another jockey (cousin or not) what not to do prior to race. This could be deemed collusion or intimidation.

Jockeys must always ride to win for their owners, and not as a tag-team to frustrate or inconvenience others.

Mullins and Ruby are doing their best to make this about Patrick's actions after the post.

It's not about that ,  that's just a slap on the wrist offence.

The real smoking gun here are Patrick's words detailing race collusion in the subsequent interview.

Surely it's only 'collusion ' if the other jockey had've done what he asked?

I've always known horseracing in Ireland is "managed". This is just absolute confirmation.

He needs to be made an example of if only for the good of Racing.

Your probably right MJK,
But the fact Danny caused such consternation shows it was fully expected he do what was asked or more likely told.

Cheers I'll drop you a WhatsApp over the weekend

And btw I'm very pro Patrick Mullins.
I love his pre race thoughts and after race analysis,   his willingness to speak about some of willies horses pro's and con's etc.

But I'm involved in the game as an owner and want the sport to stay clean and strong,
It's why I'm so outspoken on some of the scandals to come out and the pathetic effort of the IHRB to properly sanction the offenders.

There are plenty want it stopped and the funding racing receives from government can't be guaranteed going forward,  in fact I think the expected largest party after the next election have said in the past they will stop it.

It's why racing has to keep itself clinically clean going forward and the IHRB sweeping things under carpets doesn't help.

The transparency and sanctions handed out in places like Hong Kong are what we should be aiming for to instill respect and trust and give us a good argument in talks with ministers about funding.

OK MJK..Take care..

MJK - No!  Simple agreement is enough.

MJK - replying to your message of 20.15.

But surely the resulting manoeuvre meant he didn't agree?

and gave him a brilliant ride, I thought, to win.

Anne Stokell would've won on that ffs, the things a fkng machine.

htf was it a "brilliant ride"

... and she wouldn't have gone ballistic at someone trying their backside off to beat her

as one is required to do .....

for anyone that didn't see the link, here is Danny's take on it on the way home - and it's worth reading

Stinks like the F1 fiasco 'races' where number 2 team driver has opportunity to overtake number 1 team driver but is ordered not to by team bosses

Mullins boy has embarrassed his old man bigtime here

100% correct. And if people cared at all about the integrity of Racing they would have to agree.

I think it´s a valid argument by Patrick to inform the other jockeys of the plan. I used to do the same before the races. I said listen guys, I´ll jump the first in front, from there you can do whatever you want, just don´t overtake me on the left or right until we cross the finish line. Worked like a charm.

I always like Danny. He often has a go from the front, and makes sure that even the long shots get a good ride. Others would just sit out the back on the 20-1 shot, when the stablemate is odds-on and supposed to win anyway.

to be fair and in patty,s defence since he was seeing frosty last yr ,1st time he,s had a chance to get a word in edgeways

Did he tell her not to go for the gap?

When will we find out the length of his ban. For bringing the game into serious disrepute if nothing else.

With the stuff that's been going on in this sport for the last few decades i doubt it's possible for anymore damaging disrepute , in all honesty integrity in gambling orientated sports will never truly be perceived and never has been.

Good luck today all

Patrick clearly not smart in this situation. Surely he should have said to Danny "Uncle Willie" says dont go up the inner as ive got to leave a gap. Just following Dads orders and he doesnt want to scupper both our chance with a melee.

Patrick left a big gap for him turning down hill, that was so he could obtain an advantage over rest of field and run second as danny did not have enough horse the stupid move on his own stablemate was just  rivalry between cousins, post race stuff from Patrick was stupid too but justified imvho. No big deal, no bigger issues, just another day at the races.

Patrick Mullins had no right to monopolise the gap on his inside esp if he'd left it opened in the 1st place; Patrick Mullins had no right to tell another jockey not to take that gap. The jockey was riding for the owner not Patrick Mullins. Perhaps Patrick Mullins would consider sticking to riding one-runner race or a walkover.

I hope Patrick Mullins gets a suspension as a result. This is clearly unsportsmanship and intimidation. I hope the IHRB gathers some long overdue cahones and sanction Patrick Mullins for his unprofessionalism and petulance on the track.

IHRB must act on this decisively, and not one-rule for the big stables/trainers/owners, and another for the rest.

Patrick Mullins was only employed to ride one horse and it's as simple as that.

IHRB will doubtless investigate this with their usual speed and we'll know the outcome 2 years after Patrick retires.

Jockey says he's always trying. Never heard that before. What about the ones he rides for Emmett?

I was advised to say nothing (and, like my cousin Danny, I’m not going to listen!) but I want to give my thoughts and explain my logic around the Faugheen Novice Chase at Limerick last week, when I rode Gaelic Warrior to beat Danny on Il Etait Temps.

Before I ride in a race, I visualise what might happen – who might do what, where and when – so I can react quicker if and when those things do happen.

In Limerick the rail stops at the home bend, which leaves a gap on the inside of the horse in front. My reading of the race beforehand was that American Mike would be on my boot turning in, that the other two wouldn’t be going well enough to be involved at that stage considering the gallop I’d be setting, and that the only horse who could be tempted by the inside run was Il Etait Temps.

Two other things were in my mind when considering what might happen in the race at this point: the fact that Gaelic Warrior jumps to his right – a major point; and the incident in Leopardstown two days before when Path D’Oroux went for a run up the inside at the final fence, had a horse jump across him and came down.

Jockeys going for an inside run are banking on the jockeys in front being taken somewhat by surprise. My thinking was that if I let Danny know I would be aware of the possibility, he would consider the risk-to-reward ratio of the run unviable.

From my experience, when jockeys try to squeeze up the inside at a fence, the chance of something going wrong increases. Add in a horse who jumps right and it’s self-explanatory as to why I didn’t want that to happen. Again, Gaelic Warrior jumps right.

Il Etait Temps goes up Gaelic Warrior's inside approaching the second-last at Limerick
Il Etait Temps goes up Gaelic Warrior's inside approaching the second-last at Limerick
Danny had four options turning in and decided to run head first into a locked door, which took our focus and energy away from the race at a critical stage.

I considered it stupid and unnecessary and told him as much after the line. I did overreact but if you can't shout at your family, who can you shout at?! My horse jumps right and, having seen the Path D’Oroux incident, I felt he could have unnecessarily put both of our horses in a position that heightened our chances of falling. Some might not agree with that but that’s how I see it. Why try to go up the inside of a horse who jumps right? Which is exactly what Gaelic Warrior did at the fence.

Gaelic Warrior jumps right at the second-last, across Il Etait Temps on his inside
Gaelic Warrior jumps right at the second-last, across Il Etait Temps on his inside
As for my subsequent interview, I gave an honest answer to a straight question that I thought perhaps gave an interesting insight. Maybe that was naive of me. And, outside the heat of the moment, could I have explained it better? Certainly.

The fact we were both riding for the same trainer didn’t come into my thinking. We’re both jockeys trying to win a race – and the race showed that quite clearly. As did the race in which Danny stuck Lossiemouth in a pocket; as did the race in which Paul Townend put me and Sharjah in a pocket; as did the race in which I tried to keep Danny in on Vauban last Christmas.

I’ve been told it came across as arrogant and self-entitled. Well, so be it if it does. This is high-speed, high-stakes sport, not a playground. I’m different on the track than I am off it and I ride better because of that.

I’m allowed to say what I said to Danny or any other jockey, as are opposing football players in a tunnel before a match. Danny is entitled to ignore me. I’m allowed to be angry at what I consider a stupid and unnecessary manoeuvre – although I’ll wait until we’re inside the weigh room next time to make my point. The show goes on.

And Danny buys dinner next time.

What a pathetic and petulant response from Patrick Mullins? The reality is no jockey can instruct or tell another jockey - related or not - what they can/cannot or must/must not do in a race esp if there is a gap sufficient big enough for another horse to go through.

The stewards will decide whether there has been an infringement or not post the race should there be any incident between the jockeys and/or horses. This remit is not Patrick Mullins', but the stewards.

impossible123
How was The KG for you after laying Gerri at huge prices then backing him back short…apparently to green up which seems head scratching . Then saying you’re in trouble with Hewick if he wins!!!

if it "jumps right" it's up to Danny to do his homework and ride his mount accordingly.  not you tell him what to do.

and by the way, it didn't jump right at the 2nd last, or the last.  straight as a fookin die ...

Well briefed and rehearsed response there.
Tried to cover every charge and accusation.

Almost what you'd expect from legal adviser tbh.

Saxon

How he managed to lay at a huge price and back it a short price to green up, sums up the rubbish that he types on here.

'saxon farm', my only green in the KG was BMG (trebles and accas), and I won 1/2 from it; I 'lay/back' Gerri (lost £40 stake as saver); 'lay' others too (won £66); 'back' Hewick at 16/1 for £10 (as a saver given market contraction). But, for Hewick I'd have won £160 less. However, had BMG won I'd have a further £1.5k running on Galopin and City of Troy; if so, I'd "manage" accordingly. As such, only a small green onto Galopin.

All in all a fairly satisfactory result for effort deployed.

I think Patrick Mullins is an arrogant/conceited individual from his latest response. He opined like a brief.

Do saxon and brandyon the rocks realise that this thread is about Patrick Mullins and not the bets of impossible?

If so tell us your verdict on Mullins.

Already had my say on the subject, thanks for your concern, Sparrow.

Ive nothing against PW - but its like some of the top players, football coaches or anyone who is powerful or successful in their field. They build up sense of entitlement, and lose touch of reality. Has anyone from RP actually commented on this>? Or are they too scared?

Patrick not doing himself a lot of favours with parts of that statement.

patrick seeing what you get when mr and mrs mone offer you the use of their solicitor

I side with Patrick Mullins here and as he has admitted, he made 2 mistakes which was to vent his feelings after the race, caught on camera, and then to admit discussing tactics with another jockey.  They do seem to live in a kind of bubble, as if nobody is watching.

His advice to Danny seemed vindicated to me, Danny's horse made a mistake and got unbalanced because of that run up the inside.  Patrick was correct.

Are we to believe jockeys never discuss anything? I understand Piggott was known for sometimes bullying other jockeys into revealing tactics. Tom Marquand and Hollie Doyle, both utmost professionals in the way they operate but they turn up all over the world in the same races, do they never discuss anything between them?  hard to imagine..

Surely, it goes on all the time..

Surely it does. But as a sport that depends on gambling, racing must be seen to be fair. This incident gives the impression that (some members of) the yard regard Grade 1 races as being like sweeties to be handed out in turn. That day it was Patrick's turn, and don't let anyone dare try to pinch his chocolate. It's not on, as a public spectacle, unless we want racing to be like a less entertaining version of the WWE.

How about deliberately trying to run another jockey off the track as he didn't do what he was told to do before the race, Smoky? I would count that as another mistake, myself.

That's the most significant element of this debacle for me, largely overlooked. He didn't give a shyte about who was winning the race at that point, only showing D Mullins who was in charge, even if it ended up with D Mullins and/or the horse ending the race in the back of an ambulance.

Its bringing the game into disrepute imo. You just cant do and say things like he did in public, even if there are realities that are true. Look what happened to Liz Truss just based on words.... (which lets be honest were probably true too)

Patrick Mullins should have just said. Beware, my horse jumps slightly to his right, if you're that way inclined.

my horse not sure to stay so ok if i set a slow gallop today, danny and co

where does it end

all though mullins is trying to say the opposite in this statement he really is just a bit thick, is he really suggesting that he,s telling others my horse jumps to the right so  you
cant go up my inside
cant go outside unless you want pushing further to the right
so only route open to you is make sure you stay behind me

danny should have known himself warrior jumps occasionally left and shouldnt have been trying to go inside late on..patrick shouldnt have went on like he did in front of everyone watching..wasnt what racing authorities want viewers to see.

danny should have known himself warrior jumps occasionally right and shouldnt have been trying to go inside late on..patrick shouldnt have went on like he did in front of everyone watching..wasnt what racing authorities want viewers to see.

I think we ought to kill this thread. Otherwise, Patrick Mullins' head will morph into celeb E status. The man is conceited and lacking wholesome.

Not against Patrick Mullins at all but he's digging a bigger hole for himself here, He could have just said he over-reacted in the heat of the moment and apologised but instead tries to justify the finger wagging and public rebuke. Lots of horses jump to the left or to the right. Jockeys figure it out quickly enough and take their chances. Thats the nature of the game. Gaelic Warrior is certainly not unique in that regard. Patrick could have moved inside and shut the gap. He can't expect to have it both ways

So nobody saw Harry and Pauls interview on Sat talking about how they were going to ride Stage, Correct me if I'm wrong , Paul asks Harry how are you going to ride him and Harry says, well I've just spoken to x and he says hes going to do this etc. It seems to me that nobody on this thread have ever lost their temper ,or told anyone what to do in their live's ,all pure as the driven snow it seems . Time to realise that life is for grown ups and can be a very dangerous business for jockeys who put their lives on the line most days..To all you saints on here who have never once lost it ,please please say a prayer for me as I'm sure you have a direct line to God....

Again you miss the point workrider,  the issue is not Patrick losing his temper.

I'm not missing ANY point hence the reference to Paul and Harry , jockeys telling one another what they are going to do BEFORE the race....

There's a massive difference between a jockey telling others he's going to make the running compared to a jockey telling another not to do something.

To pretend there isn't is just dumb.

And i know your only trying to defend irish racing but condoning and trying to play down the gravity of Patrick's instructions to Danny is not helping it.

It's the total opposite tbh.

Workrider I think you are missing the point. Discussing tactics pre-race is not the issue here. Patrick was on the best horse by far and his horse's only flaw is that he jumps to his right. This is something the other riders are well aware of but also something any pro jockey would exploit if given half a chance. It wasn't a safety issue as Patrick seems to imply from his column - if safety was an issue for any jumps jockey they wouldn't consider doing the job in the first place. Patrick needs to wear his big boy pants when riding against the pros in Grade 1s. If he chooses to ride in lane 3 then he cannot expect to own lane 1 and 2 as well.

Surely if you know a horse jumps to his right the why the hell would you want to come up his inside like Danny did.

Patrick Mullins has not been punished for his post-race antics in the aftermath of the Faugheen Novice Chase at Limerick over Christmas after senior officials of the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board decided he did not bring Irish racing into disrepute.

The record-breaking champion amateur caused a stir after winning the Grade 1 contest on Gaelic Warrior with plenty of finger wagging towards his cousin Danny Mullins, who tried to sneak up his inside before the second-last on the runner-up Il Etait Temps.

During the interview with those officials, Patrick Mullins conceded he "hadn't expressed himself appropriately in his comments on Racing TV immediately after the race, which may have incorrectly fuelled some of the subsequent speculation and comment."

He apologised for his conduct on the day, which he accepted was not as it should have been, and gave an undertaking that the conduct in question would not be repeated.

The officials accepted his apology and will not be taking any further action.

Surprise surprise.

Big stable - scot-free; small one takes 3 yrs despite no action taken at the end. IHRB is a joke; Geraghty and his pals were done by stewards for 30 days for injudicious riding (they were sleepy on the race), but overturned by IHRB given the jockey had very important rides for his boss JP.

everyone knows everyone in ireland.  probably find someone at the IHRB's wife used to babysit for patricks next door neighbours great aunt, and they're all friends with Diarmuts brother in law who used to run the horse and jockey in Muckanaghederdauhaulia.

so nuffin to see, move on.
