In the 1500s,the church ran out of space in the graveyards,so they started burying people in family plots, one on top of the other.
When they dug up the dead to make space,1 in 20 coffins had scratch marks on the lid of the coffin.5%.
Lead tankers were the main cup that beer was sold in.the lead mixed with the acholol, made people pass out into a coma type sleep, the family believing them to be dead, buried them alive.
After discovering this, people who died were then taken home and lied on the kitchen table for 3 days,to see if they woke up. Hence ,the saying, holding a wake came from.
Then when buried,a rope was tied round their waist coming up to the top,and a bell was attached to this. If anyone was buried alive ,they would pull the rope and the bell would ring. Hence the saying.saved by the bell.
Someone was paid to sit in the graveyard all night to listen for the bell ringing. Hence why the night shift is often called the graveyard shift.
Whilst holding the wake, people would put pieces of bacon nailed to the mantle piece, hence smoked bacon, then when people came round, you would cut pieces off the bacon and hand it out,and people would sit their, chewing the fat.
No one would wash from summer to spring has it was too cold, then when they had a bath in the spring.the man would go first, then the wife, then the kids in age order.the water was so dirty by the youngest, usually a baby.people would say, make sure you don’t throw the baby out with the bath water, cos the baby couldn’t be seen in the dirty water.
