Max Bygraves, entertainer, sold his beloved MB 1 to Registration Transfers, along with the Rolls Royce it has been on for many years.
Born on 16th October 1922, Bygraves is remembered by many for the famous radio programme Educating Archie and for TV's Singalongamax and Family Fortunes. He holds the record for artists appearing at the Royal Variety Performance. He reputably refused up to £50,000 from Mercedes Benz for his private number plates. Must of read it in the sun ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Selwyn a tad eccentric to say the least..
Once in an concession get together involving various company hierarchy we all ordered some quick lunch from the local bakery , all had different things and Selwyn ordered a pie , when his pie arrived a bit of pastry had flaked off the rim so he went nuts , ordered his gopher back to the bakery to buy the entire tray of pies his was selected from including the tray , proceeded to choose a fresh pie then stuck his finger inside every other pie on the tray. Wouldn't call it normal behaviour ![]() |

My mate says his missus offered to buy him the K13RAN number plate, or some fancy music system for his car (late 90’s probably). He chose the music system. Ten years ago he seemed to think the number plate was worth around £30k, while the music system was scrapped years later.

I knew an italian restuarant owner who had a white Fiat with a green and red stripe runinng over it and the plate GO 17 ALY which was rather clever.
Best picture I've seen of one (probably not real) was BJ 69 KFC I sold 8522 ED for 130 quid in 1976 and the car had only cost me £60 to buy. I then had registration documents sent to me by DVLA with a Mercedes with that number plate... ![]() I wrote back to them and said thanks for the document, please forward me the car! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The ones that make me smile the most are the really obscure ones that you have no idea what they're referring to until you read the driver's name in small letters at the bottom of the plate. Ah, so THAT'S what it's meant to be, you insignificant, insecure person!

Many, many years ago, I worked for a gentleman who owned registration number K1 which was used on his own personal vehicle. One day he asked me to go on an errand for him but my own vehicle was in for service so he threw me the keys of K1 and off I went. My destination was some 20 miles away and throughout the journey I was subjected to constant inspection by other drivers, particularly when stopped at traffic lights. The most disturbing part of the whole return journey was the fact that I was pulled over no less than 3 times by a police patrol vehicle and subjected each time to a thorough interrogation. Since that time never felt the need to have a personalised plate. Must say the gentleman owning the number was just that, a gentleman.

Spotted a certain disgraced irish ex-jockey driving into Cartmel racecourse with the plate F1XER .
My favourite though is TUR80 . First saw it on a Porsche in West London back in the early 80's and then a couple of years later on a Bentley . |
