I think Mr Dettori would be the most undeserving winner, why? Apart from his retirement for race riding (oops! he changed his mind...he's riding in America) what has he done to be listed for this award? I'm not even suggesting his dalliance with narcotic, but achievement.

Absolute c*nt of the highest order and a complete joke that he’s made it onto the SPOTY shortlist.

soldieroffortune -- Frankie makes three points that seem quite reasonable:-

1. He knows he will not win SPotY (he was only 3rd after the Magnificent 7) but is pleased to have been nominated

2. Someone new needs to step up to be the face of racing, just as he replaced Willie Carson, and racing as a whole needs to sell itself

3. British racing has fallen behind other countries, especially Australia and the US, owing to low prizemoney (HK & Japan too) and has been financially dependent on the Middle East

You can read it yourself at:-
https://www.racingpost.com/news/britain/frankie-dettori-i-was-selling-myself-but-i-was-also-selling-racing-because-someones-got-to-do-it-a9dX03J8PQlF/
Report Ramruma • December 15, 2023 6:24 AM GMT
Asked who might succeed him as the face of the sport, he said: "I don't know, maybe we'll have to wait ten years to find out, but there's loads of young jockeys that can become household names. I didn't start like this. When I started Willie Carson was the most flamboyant person in the sport, but it took a lot of work to get to this position.

"If you go back to 1996, I had the seven winners, I did Question of Sport and Top Of The Pops, I was on Parkinson. It took me years to become a household name.

"I was selling myself, but I was selling my sport because someone's got to do it. There's no point sitting back, riding and going to bed. We're an entertainment sport and I used it to propel myself, but I used it to help the sport.

"I think everyone should roll up their sleeves and do what I did. You go to America, Australia, Japan, everything's available for everyone, from morning track work to interviews on the radio. In England it's all top secret, we can't film it or say anything. I think we're lacking there."

John Gosden has backed Frankie Dettori in his bid to be crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year on Tuesday night and claimed the superstar jockey should be favourite for the prestigious award.

Gosden believes Dettori's unique longevity in racing would make him a worthy winner and feels his former stable jockey's position as fourth in the betting at odds of 25-1 with Coral is wide of the mark.

He said: "I think Frankie should be even-money to win itLaugh on the basis of being consistently top-class over 35 years. It's a great achievement that his name is there but the key is to remain at the top – that is what is so unique. It doesn't happen in many athletic activities."

For horseracing perhaps. But, in general no way. The bloke has a history of drug abuse whilst riding and his exorbitant appearance money is another I'd not vote for him - he's sufficiently wealthy.

7-9pm tonight, BBC1.

For the first time, I've no interest in who wins.

Six candidates. Three are up for lifetime achievement awards: Frankie, Rory McIlroy and Stuart Broad. The hot favourite, Earps, is looking for a consolation prize after not winning the World Cup, leaving heptathlete KJT who won gold at the World Championships, which no-one cares about, and Alfie the wheelchair tennis guy which also no-one cares about.

I'm going out on a limb and saying one of them will lift the trophy in a mediocre year for British sport.

I don't believe she should have won, but it's clear the majority vote did, whichever way we look at it.

1991 - Bob NUDD  - Angler/Fisherman

There was a campaign in an angling newspaper to make him the BBC’s prizewinner for 1991, and angling being the massively popular passtime that it is, he got a huge number of votes, more than 100,000.

This haul was so huge, in fact, that he would have walked the title, way ahead of Liz McColgan, Will Carling and Gary Lineker, who were the top three that year.   Happy

However, the BBC ruled that the campaign in an angling newspaper had gone against the competition rules, and Bob Nudd was denied what would have been the catch of his career.   Cry
