Newbury is fit for racing for its seven-race card on Friday, which is set to begin at 12.10. The opening day of the meeting is headlined by the Grade 2 Coral Long Distance Hurdle (3.00) and features Marie's Rock and the popular veteran Paisley Park.
Saturday's meeting, featuring the Coral Gold Cup, looks in more doubt, with overnight temperatures threatening to reach as low as -5C and an inspection on the morning of racing has been called for 7.30am. Speaking at 7.45am on Friday, clerk of the course George Hill said: "The only more positive thing we can say is we didn't get as cold as we thought we did for today's meeting, and we might get that luck again. However, it's going to be colder overnight. "No time is a good time for inspections, but there's not much earlier or later than when we can look at it tomorrow. If I'm happy to go at 6am again like this morning then we will. The covers will be down immediately after racing and then we hope it can go in our favour. "The forecast this morning for today's racing is still cloudy and there's not a lot of sun around at the moment. The track is still under the covers, but I imagine it'll ride as we expect it to." Hill said on Thursday he had not been involved in any possible contingency plans at this stage, while the BHA had nothing further to add at this point. Fairyhouse's opening day of its two-day winter meeting must pass a 7.30am inspection on raceday morning, with temperatures due to dip below freezing on Friday night. Clerk of the course Brendan Sheridan said: "The going is soft, and there's a slight grass frost and plenty of moisture in the ground, but the temperature is forecast to get down to -3C tonight, and not much higher than 2C tomorrow. We'll monitor the situation going forward and see where we're at tomorrow morning." Both Doncaster and Musselburgh's meetings today have been cancelled due to frozen tracks. Elsewhere, Leicester's Sunday card must pass an inspection at 11.30am on Saturday. Carlisle's fixture on the same day is also subject to a midday inspection on Saturday. |

AW racing goes on throughout the summer but not in the last week in Nov...curious?
Jumpers bumper cards are no doubt being furiously arranged. |
|

Carlisle Sunday must be 'a million'
minus-6c this morning - and nearby Shap (on the M6) = minus-8c |

Kinda agree but tell the last year the Hennesey or the Fighting Fifth were called off
|
|

Fighting Fifth had to be moved to another course in 2008 & 2010.

grade c in woodwork might not make many take any notice of me
but why didnt someone with a half a nugget amongst newbury bigwigs, suggest they run all the chases or hurdles 1st and then they could have started putting the frost covers down on one of the courses during racing,or am i missing something obvious ? |
|
By:
Was at Newbury with a breeze up horse about 10 yrs ago for 3 days. So frosty doubts they would be able to breeze but they did then
more doubts for Fri but they went then an army of Indian staff virtually ran with the covers straight after the last and Sat went ahead so don't give up yet for tmrw! Was definately as cold as now. Surrounding grass areas frozen solid. |
|
By:
New CoC now though - the old one (Osmand?) was excellent. No idea if his successor will be as tuned-in.
