The easy way: High fat diet – no carbs. Eat as much meat and fish as you like, guaranteed to lose weight. But no carbs. That includes fruit, and alcohol.
Or the opposite, all carbs and no fat. Veg oil is fat, and all animal products and fish are fat.
Both diets work to lose weight quickly.

The high fat diet will give you heart disease. As it did with it's main promoter Dr Robert Atkins. Author of The Atkin's Diet. But not in the short term.
The high carb diet consisting of mainly starch, is sustainable. Add a bit of fruit and veg. You'll be fine.

I have gone from 17st 8lbs in August 2022 to 14st 2lbs this morning on No Carb / Low Carb. Eggs, bacon, sausages tomato.
Scrambled eggs, boiled eggs etc in the morning although I don't eat until about 12 now most days now. Chicken salad, corned beef, Spicy chicken pieces, kebabs from iceland for dinner.
Steak, chicken , beef etc roasts for tea with cauliflower, sprouts, broccoli. Mince, onions and gravy. I have Greek yogurt with nuts and frozen berries, all cheeses and salted peanuts. I don't drink anymore but have Pepsi Max through the week and at weekends.
I am 6ft 2in so now feel great for my age and just stick to it.
If you start and are strict and if anyone has it to lose the weight will fall off in the first few months, it gets harder as time goes on. If you LOVE meat, steaks, chicken, eggs, cheese, nuts etc give it a go.

Would like to emphasis again, how important it is NOT to do these no carbs etc diets.
These sort of diets are great in the short term but it is not how you can keep weight off in the long term.
You can not live the rest of your life not eating carbs.
Just eat healthy, keep active and slowly lose weight.
Then keep to a healthy lifestyle.
Simples.

You do not need to run to lose weight. = any form of excercise burns calories.
A hire protein diet will help burn fat = its simple..body burns fat when you use more calories than than you take on board.

The history of dietetics can be traced as far back as the writings of Homer, Plato and Hippocrates in ancient Greece.
Been done for 3,000 years and people still make money out of stupid people, repeat and rinse

Mate lost both legs diabetic and devastating mine was type 2 his type 1 but a warning for us all, the doctors diabetic nurse tested me when I lost my weight and found losing all the weight I was not diabetic no more but still insisted I take all the medication 3 tablets a day as they don’t want you to come of The drugs as the surgery get paid to subscribe them from the big drugs companies, so it’s in there interests to keep you on them they didn’t like it one bit and I was the first one in a big practice who had ever become undiabetic and they didn’t want others knowing you could beat it,that was 11 years ago but attitudes change and it’s a bit more normal now

You have a very good point about the sustainability of a low/no carb life style but in my case of losing nearly four stone it has worked for me and I have never felt better. To be honest the weight comes off in the first six months, I have mostly chicken and I'm not really hungry until dinner time. One of my son's lost three stone and also looks great, we are going to Royal Ascot for his 40th and have a bet that he is the same weight by then.

As ladycarla says, it's not rocket science... to work out that less calories in and more exercise will make you lose weight... The method you use just varies the speed of loss I guess My weight loss has not been as drastic as some on here but I'm happy with a slow steady approach, as opposed to my gambling mentality of "all in" It's a delight to be able to get into trousers (and shirts) that have been too tight before (and me too tight to throw them out)
Gl all with any diet you choose

i tend to think eat sensibly and exercise is a good idea...
and the way forward for ME...
i went for a decent walk last night...
i went for a 10 minute run at 7am this morning...
i have had a bowl of cereal of bran flakes and corn flakes (50/50) and half a chopped banana...
just about to have a cup of tea with skimmed milk (no sugar)...
does that sound reasonable ?
i'm going to do another run before lunchtime and either a walk or a run after racing tonight...
and the plan will be to increase the length of run over time...
considering i've been doing no exercise recently and not been eating too wisely i reckon that's a good start at least.

Exercise bike in the spare room works for me , only a couple of miles a day plus 100 expander chair stretches is enough to keep the fatigue away , been doing that for 3 years and my legs in particular are solid as a rock.
Figured that buying a real bike wouldn't work as there would be too many easy excuses to give it a miss on too many days but stepping into the bedroom is an easy 10 mins.
6ft and 13:08 at the moment but ideal weight for me is 13:02 so looking to lose 6lb before Xmas.
Good luck Hibby ( give that peanut butter & honey a swerve imo )

I've put on 2 stone/13kg this year. It just creeps up on you, especially when you love a good takeaway late at night
I would say with bad knees you should look into walking more and eating a cleaner diet. Easy to say, not that easy to implement if you have a sweet tooth !

You need to expend 3,500 more calories for a pound of fat which is a 500 calorie daily deficit for the week.
To not diminish your metabolic rate you want to mix it up but keep to a 3,500 deficit for the week i.e. 1,250 on 3 days and 3,000 on 4 days will easily get you that if you're getting 10,000 steps in, doing weight resistance twice a week, and are an average height male.
Like others said, high protein is good (keeps you satiated and you burn more calories digesting it). Fibre also good for similar reasons.
Any crash diet will see you lose 5-10bs in a matter of days but 90% of that is water weight and will come back on the moment your glycogen (which is 3 parts water) is restored.
Slow and steady is the way forward. Lifestyle changes. I might try and lose 2kg a month and see if by next summer this 13kg has gone or at least hasn't got worse Good luck Hibby and others

Cortisol levels or other hormones might be way out of whack not to lose weight on such a restriction. You can get a simple Metbolic Rate test done via a breathaliser at a few places which lets you know how much calories you expend in a day if you were literally in a comatose state. Over 5 months on such a restriction it's hard to comprehend that you didn't lose weight (not suggesting you aren't telling the truth, 100% believe you, just is a very rare scenario).

Bloody hell R-D, didn't know Guinness weighed so much. I only put on 8lbs after an all inc holiday this summer. I don't drink nowhere near as much as years ago when I would have about ten pints a night on holiday. Bacardi and pepsi max does the no carb trick now..

As Rico said, we're all made differently. I can try and put weight on and fail whereas others only have to look at a biscuit. Regardless of weight, be healthy, exercise and what's to worry about ?

I do not jog or run except in my school days; I played loads of football. Now in my ascending years I find the daily short walks (sometimes merely round the corner and back) helps to keep me mentally fresh, fitter and lesser belly fat. Once or twice every week I'd walk to the shops (about 40 mins away), or park the car 1/2 way - I've tended to buy too much to carry.
I think most important of all only eat when one is hungry; I'm lucky I find sweet or fatty foods too rich and sickening eg chocolates, pastries and chips (maybe once every few weeks).
But, I must admit it's getting increasingly more difficult to stay trim and not ache getting out of bed every morning. Even washing one's face and hair bending down in a bathtub will require a short warm-up of stretching to loosen-up the old limbs.

IMO any form of exercise will do , but the most important thing is to progress at your own pace and want to do it . Its useless jogging too far or too fast then not wanting to repeat because everything aches next day , then you still do it and end up injured . As am sure has been said , follow something like Couch to 10K and if you feel its too easy , then its perfect . FWIW I used to do running and triathlons plus sundry other sports to decent levels , still average 55-60 miles a week of mainly walking (4 dogs ) but still compete at top level dog agility , where I have to ' sprint ' a bit , against all ages (at 77 ) , still have goals ...however unrealisic , and cud also lose a few lbs .

see where it takes me and go from there...
i'm not putting myself under any pressure or anything like that but hopefully by mid summer i'll notice some sort of improvement in fitness etc.

Unless you have an allergy the general rule should be what goes in should equal what comes out or is metabolised. Energy, protein including essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals (including salt if you sweat a lot). Most disorders can be cured by having more or less of one of those things. I was a farmer and a trained animal nutritionist and it amazes me that we can predict very accurately how much to feed a pig to make it reach a required weight with a desired lean meat % but we still debate how to do the same with humans.
