A 3M G1 domestic chase and no runners. Seems quite odd, even if the galacticos aren't entered one would have thought he has a few lower down the pecking order that could have ran.

How misconstrued? If a trainer monopolised (almost) thro' the card with long odds-on how could that be good for punters and horseracing? I'm mostly a fav backer however, no matter how fancy a runner is esp from the same stable with multiple runners I'd hesitate or refrain to back them all in an acc or every race esp if they are non-prestigious races unless in antepost (not raceday). Only a very few (if at all) punters would do odds-on individually in every race, why? It's usually unprofitable, interesting or savvy.
I firmly believe racegoers want to see competition. At Down Royal just recently only one representation (stand corrected) from Mr Mullins' Closutton stable - the largest and most prolific winning stable. Which racecourse will be next in turn be the benevolent destination for Mr Mullins? Or Mr Elliot? Was Down Royal a coincidence?
I hope so.

lot of those horses over there are just family pets running against proper racehorses. the maiden hurdle at Naas today, 22 runners about half the field were 1000/1 here, another 3 or 4 were over 485/1.

Mullins hasn't won the Grade 1 at Down Royal this century. He's only won the Grade 2 2 1/2 m chase twice this century. It's just not a meeting he targets. He prefers the John Durkan as the starting point for his better staying chasers.
Mullins still wants his horses on the boil for Punchestown in late April/early May. He doesn't want them to shoot their season at the start of November. It's a long season, and horses can only run at their very best maybe twice per season.
