Lost all respect for him when he refused to ride at Listowel this year after he couldn't ride there last year because he got suspended. Would have meant so much for the locals to see him .

Bad move. Best to go when people are saying "Why is he retiring?" not "Why the **** doesn't he retire?". Which they will in time.

Very very poor the listowel episode.
Report windsor knot October 12, 2023 9:59 AM BST
apparently the listowel appearance money was originally  agreed at 4k . he couldnt go last year  so listowel  told this year it will be 15k . presumably as it was a special retirement farewell tour . or not !

Looks like he cannot resist all the American Ballyhoo and Hullabaloo that will surely surround him.

Be 'right up his street'.

Perhaps, like Television celebrities - extending their careers 'in The Jungle' and on other non-descript Reality shoes - along with fading Film Stars .... They can never believe, nor accept - it's over.

ITV and Ed have been and are building to a huge bubbling crescendo for his 'Goodbye and Farewell' this Saturday(?).

It's going to be a tough gig for Ed with everyone knowing he's changed his mind.

A question that comes to mind is how many gifts, trophies, golden handshakes and appearance fees, Frankie Dettori
has pocketed over the past year and will any be returned?

I was all for a Frankie Farewell period, he is by far the biggest box office star in racing over the past 25 years,
but it has gone on and on and now it seems a bit of sham.

Leaves a bit of bitter taste.

Report differentdrum October 12, 2023 12:37 PM BST
Hardly a surprise, but having milked his 'final year' to the max, a total farce. You either retire, or you don't retire. I doubt this decision was made overnight, but he has still kept stringing people along.

It says USA, but what happens if he got offered a big ride in the Derby, or similar?
Report Brian October 12, 2023 12:39 PM BST
At least he won't be riding in the UK. Enough is enough.

At 50 plus years does he really want to be riding out through the cold winter months when he can be in the sunshine of Florida and much better prize money. Horses and riding are in his blood so why not please himself in the twilight of his career. He has clearly discussed the move with his family who are supportive so why not and should he get the chance to return to Europe for big races if asked then I am sure he would be welcomed by the racing public. Good luck to him I say for someone who has entertained with his riding excellence for many many years.
Report georgebakerfanclub October 12, 2023 2:39 PM BST
Told you months ago he would not retire. He is a greedy little man, announced his retirement to see what offers he got from the media. He has been creaming off all the high value races for years. And will be doing the same next year only living in the sun in a nice mansion in California. Bit like Harry!

Report Tiger Tiger October 12, 2023 6:04 PM BST
Why shouldnt he take up the challenge of one year racing in the USA? Its his last chance and would regret it if he turned down the opportunity. Obviously this is a recent development and good luck to him, the financial rewards for racing for another season were far to big for him to turn down. Stop calling him greedy, We would all do it.
Report layemall October 12, 2023 6:23 PM BST
Well said Tiger and Feltfair....good luck to him I say. No need to criticise him.... he thought he was ready to pack it in and now he doesn't...he said as much in an interview on ATR I saw earlier. Is he not allowed to change his mind ?....cut him some slack. Perhaps not the most likeable of riders, but definitely one of the best ever imo.
Report mrcombustible October 12, 2023 6:31 PM BST
Of course he is entitled to change his mind and I presume he will refund any appearance fees he has been paid as part pf his final season
Report spyker October 12, 2023 6:42 PM BST
I can see another Piggot tax case coming up unless he donates all proceeds from functions (or appearance fees if billed as 'Frankies last....') to charity in a tax efficient way of course.........
Report layemall October 12, 2023 6:55 PM BST
Maybe he will, but I doubt it and don't think he needs to. I got the impression from that ATR interview that he feels he has achieved everything he wanted to in Europe and this was a very recent opportunity for him that had cropped up. One that he didn't want to turn down and needed to wait on his visa being granted before he said anything.
If he is tempted to come back for the odd ride then that's fine by me. We are all getting older, including Frankie, and personally I am really happy that I will still get to see him ride in America while it lasts on ATR, and no doubt so are thousands of Americans in person.
Best of British Frankie Wink

I think the kerfuffle whether will Dettori or won't Dettori retire at the end of this season was getting increasingly boring and annoying. For goodness sake Dettori is only jockey ie a sportsperson; no great person, philanthropist or medic giving his time and expertise helping the poor and sick to have a better quality of life.

Whether Dettori rides in the UK, Ireland or USA it makes no difference to me. Would I be backing his mounts in the USA? Very unlikely. Why? Horses for courses similarly jockeys; the local jockeys will be my 1st port of call. Dettori is no Piggott, Eddery, Carson, Cauthen, Murtagh or Kinane.

I believe the hoo-haa o,f his "pending retirement" is solely because every one of the present jockeys is not a household name and lacking charisma; Dettori is no Piggott, Eddery, Carson, Cauthen, Murtagh or Kinane.

Good luck to Mr Dettori whatever he embarks on next or where.

No way should Dettori be offered rides in Europe any more after season's end.. He freely declared his intention to retire and was believed to the point where he was the subject of a whole year of fuss and adulation with plum rides arriving from all quarters.
The facts of his career speak for themselves but he is tarnishing his reputation by acting in a greedy and devious manner. Maybe he doesn't give a toss but while he can seek an appendix to his career in the US he should be finished in Europe. He's had a long   and successful timecareer in Europe. Time to take him at his word and bring the curtain down.

I think we all knew he wasn't going to retire. Off the back of a poor season where his riding resembled that of a 7lb claimer. He was in need of a bit love and attention. And boy, he certainly received this from the usual corners of the media who've carved out whole careers out of brown nosing. Cue plenty of steering jobs the late, great Mother Teresa could have won on and bingo! He ain't retiring, he's off to America and he'll be back to mop up some more steering jobs at the big meetings in the UK (replacing the jockey who put all the work in on them)
Saying all this, the standard of jockeys in the US is so poor he'll still outride them

no idea why any person would go to a race meeting to see a particular jockey. they all do the same thing - sit and shake their hands about. its not like your watching nadal's forehand, novak djokovic do his majic or tiger woods launching it from the tee.......or messi dribbling past 4 defenders.

horseracing is about the horses. frankie probably wants to keep riding in the UK but doesnt want to seem like a moron by whipping up this fanfare for nothing so lets say we are doing something different and go to america rather than going back on my word.
