NOTHING to do with affordability checks, in spite of what some are trying to pedal as the single cause of racing decline with punters.

The second covid shutdown,when the majority of sport was still taking place, decimated shop business. Was a gift from god for online and new accounts but the shops have never recovered

@the dealer

I don't think your assessment ties in with the text of the article?

"Revenue at its UK and Ireland retail division jumped 11pc in the first six months of this year. That included a 15pc increase in the first quarter and 8pc in the second quarter"
Report the dealer October 4, 2023 4:17 PM BST
It may not fit in with the text but approximately 50% of the business disappeared from shops after the second covid lock down and the majority hasn't come back.

They don't Freddie but offer every concession under the sun or did. Impossible to operate under those conditions with the costs of running a shop now so high.

dealer - so where has PP's retail income uplift come from?
Report the dealer October 4, 2023 4:26 PM BST
Haven't a clue, from competitor closures maybe ? It's been a while since I've been in that neck of the woods.

Anniversarying impact from Covid. Up 11% this year is probably still hugely down on 2019.

Report longbridge October 4, 2023 4:42 PM BST
Good call jamee1 - I had a dig in the 2022 AR and then they reported retail revenue at 87% of 2019 levels, so just coming back to where it was before.

The profit margin is the problem, you just can't offer what they do and make money anymore, the costs of running a shop are just too high at the moment, in there present state.
Report MJK October 4, 2023 5:07 PM BST
One of the shops is close to where I went to school and was always packed. However last maybe seven or eight years whenever I've looked in you could see the dwindle in the attendance. If it wasn't for the lotto I'd say they would have closed five years ago (powers and Spoils staff openly admit they only open on Christmas Eve to take lotto bets - no racing and the odd footie match).

The cost cutting is probably all linked to the ceo's bonus.
