Must have picked up 15 or 20 from beneath the Horse Chestnut at the bottom of the garden.

There is just nothing quite like that rustle in the leaves as you search for the fallen fruit, finding it, then opening it gently to avoid iit's  outer spikes.

The white velvety lining inside is lovely to touch and has a delightful scent to relish before dislodging the shiny, teak/mahogany nut lying  inside.

The warm sun on my back this afternoon was  a bonus too.

Autumn day's in England are hard to beat.

Would'nt you agree?

I was also rustling around today and found a book called 'The correct use of the apostrophe.' Would you like to borrow it?!

Too late for an old dog like me. English O and A levels as well. Afraid I have got to writing how I speak.

They say you lose it if you dont use it. Guess its true.

Thanks all the same swifty.

When is your first Match - barstool?

Presumably you still harden the Conkers in Vinegar - first.

Do you still use string - or have you moved on to Plastic Thread?

Can you wear gloves, in your Conker league - or do you still have to play bare-knuckle?

What's your record, before your prized Conker cracked?

I'd imagine they are currently being cooked overnight on low heat.

barstool, it was indeed a beautiful autumnal day, I had a tram ride through the Devon countryside, saw plenty of berries but no conkers.

Cookers was great at primary school. Vinegar and nail polish as already mentioned. I’m sure we used to put them away for the following year too. They’d shrivel up a bit but most would harden nicely, sometimes making it impossible for an eight year old to drive a nail through it! Pre drilling would’ve been the way forward!
Can’t remember the last time I saw kids with cookers.

Too dangerous,especially gas ones.
Report barstool September 26, 2023 9:09 AM BST
We used to leave them on th e hearth overnight, not too near the fire.

Small hammer and a 2" nail to make the hole.

Brown shoelace, two granny knots.

Had a couple of real wrist wrappers in my time.

Forget conker contests. Been banned for 20 by the nanny state H&S crew anyway.

Me and Mrs Celtic collect loads and put them all around the house to prevent spider season.

The golden rule is to pick them from the ground when out of their shell, never straight from the tree.

it really does work.
Report barstool September 26, 2023 11:27 AM BST
Must be spider season now, loads of webs spun between the flower stems in the garden. One in every outside window corner too, untill the mrs got the yard brush out yesterday.

Putting them in the house to scare off spiders sounds like a bit of ground baiting Celtic.Wink
