Fractional odds. Why do the bookies persist with them? There is no way I can see that they are easier to understand than decimal.

went to Upton park on a Wednesday night with Darlo in 1975; it was a cup match; Darlo had 2 special trains don't know if you remember them? All the Darlo fans met up at whitechapel what a place. some players from the west ham squad, Mervin Day, Billy Bonds, Frank Lampard and Clive Best, Darlo got beat 3 nil:( |
By:
Can't recall that game ronnie but that would be Clyde Best and Whitechapel I knew very well but not a place to be at night.
Jimnast, Would that have been some sort of Charity match? |

Hello Ronnie who beat Darlington in the 1999/2000 fa cup ?
Hope your well |
By:
sparrow , it was Frank Lampard's testimonial.
By:
Jimnast.
Another team who played in claret and blue. Getting there thank you looking forward to a week in the lakes next week. |
By:
I can still see old Frank dancing round that corner flag at Elland Road after scoring against Everton in the 1980 FA Cup so surely not his testimonial 4 years earlier, swifty!
By:
Who else ronnie
By:
sparrow, it was, i guess testimonials worked a bit differently in those days, obv now it's 10 years etc.
By:
I wouldn't have known that but it's ridiculous with so many years left to play and with Lampard's finest hour amongst them.
By:
maybe he played for both sides he was born in East Ham!
By:
Jimnast.
Did Darlo go further than your team. |
By:
Of course they did Ronnie which is why you got beat twice
By:
Born in East Ham so played on the home ground at Upton Park presumably.

longbridge -- "Fractional odds. Why do the bookies persist with them? There is no way I can see that they are easier to understand than decimal."
Fractional odds are far easier to understand than decimals, provided you realise they are completely misnamed; they are not fractions at all, they are ratios. |

He scored so many jimnast but maybe against Derby in the 1970s.

@ramruma
I'm not bad at mental arithmetic, but surely it is easier to know that if I back a horse for £10 at 1.73 I get £17.30 back than working out £10 times (1 + 8/11) in your head? Let alone working out if 11/8 is better than 7/5 etc. |

The one that won goal of the season it was always on the start of match of the day
By:
Gillingham as well as villa beat Darlington in that seasons fa cup ronnie.
By:
longbridge -- yes, but otoh it is easier to see that if you stake £4 at 11/4 you stand to win £11 than multiply £4 by 2.75. It must be admitted the traditional odds used to make more sense with old money.
By:
Conversely - Looking it at the other angle of Punting - which is primarilaly far more important than just 'how much do you stand to win' ...
Seasoned Punters KNOW instantly the ASSET Value of 11/8 - set against the adjoining odds of 5/4 and 6/4 - Whereas ... I just had to do a somewhat long-winded Mathematical calculation of ... - multiply 8 by 5 = 40 (for 11/8) - and 8 times 5 (for 7/5) ... THEN - 5 times 11 (for 11/8) - and 8 times 7 (for 7/5) - in order to determine whether ... 11/8 (= 55/40) is better or worse than 7/5 (= 56/40) ![]() I'll stick with 11/10 - 13/8 - 9/4 and 100/30 - Thank you. |
By:
ramruma "It must be admitted the traditional odds used to make more sense with old money." - like thinking of 21/20 as betting a pound to win a guinea?
By:
We grew up with the fractions and somehow managed but no bookmaker these days will want to lay 100/8 rather than 12/1.
By:
Plenty on course will sparrow
By:
I expect they will, jimnast.
