He claimed to be a professional gambler who made £100,000 a year, and would soon be “very rich.” He told police he carried on offering his professional will writing services despite his gambling success “because he liked helping people.”
Surely these people should just take responsibility for their own actions. They gambled and lost, simple as that. Vulnerable old people claiming they are "victims" it's outrageous I tell you.

Why isn't the authoritarian state intervening here?

Crooks spend their money in any number of ways. I'd suggest gambling addiction is a tiny minority. Cars, holidays, nights out prolly far more common. Let's target those industries with burdensome checks and admin costs

That would be ridiculous - surely the people that leave their credit cards lying around or are stupid enough to trust their employees, just need to take responsibility for their own actions.

Joe Bloggs who's retired and £500k walks in the car dealership to buy a new car and the dealer says "sorry sir, your pension is only £20k a year, so you've failed our Affordability Check. Can I direct you to this 2nd hand Fiat Punto. Only 100,000 miles on the clock and a bargain at £1,500." Flash Harry comes in later, he's overdrawn at the bank, with a wife and 2 kids and a £400k mortgage. Want to buy the same Audi that Joe wants on HP. On his £100k a year salary that just covers his expenditure, the dealer says he's passed the Affordability Check and his HP agreement is another £800 a month that he can't actually afford.
This is the bewildering madness that the GC is suggesting, only it's not £40k for a new Audi, it's merely rolling losses of more than £2k at any point in time, even if you are up overall. The whole thing beggars belief. It's beyond pathetic

TM showing how stupid he is as well as the contempt he has for gambling (evidenced by mocking gambling demise and blaming punters)
This chap broke the law by fraud, not in losing money idiot. The guy could just as easily have lost the money on the stock market and nothing said, that would have been an investment, which itself is a gamble in the true sense of the word. It’s the fact he deceived his clients and went beyond his remit why he’s getting sentenced.
TM’s logic would have the government follow convictions and stop innocuous spend of innocents on all activities criminals happened to have spent ill gotten gains on.

Huddersfield?.......The man was from Keighley. You're right sparrow my mistake as it's a Huddersfield paper but it said 8 different betting shop firms so Keighley wouldn't cover that. He was actually from Oxenhope 5 miles from Keighley 8 miles Halifax.

Yes, if you ever do decide to COMMIT FRAUD, and STEAL MONEY from either your employers, or unsuspecting victims, just make sure you don’t blow it all on holidays, cars and a lavish lifestyle. Be sure to gamble some away too, so you can claim to be a gambling addict.
Not only do you get a reduced sentence, but you also get to come out of it looking like the victim, rather than the criminal.
You also get a visit in prison from TM, where he does his best impression of Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting… “it’s not your fault, it’s not your fault….” !!
