'He had one price and we had another' - No Frankie Dettori at Listowel races after disagreement over fee

Frankie Dettori will not ride at this year's Listowel Harvest Festival after both sides were unable to agree a fee for his much-touted visit to the Kerry track.
Dettori will hang up his saddle at the end of this year as he brings the curtain down on his record-breaking career and Listowel was set to be a high-profile stop on his farewell tour.

The flamboyant Italian rider had been slated to appear at the Kingdom track last year before suspension ruled him out and both sides have been unable to come to an agreement this time around.

Ahead of the week-long festival from September 17-23, former Listowel chairman Pat Healy revealed that they were regrettably unable to secure the services of the legendary 52-year-old.

"We’re less than two weeks away from the seven-day Harvest Festival and I’m afraid we’ll have no Frankie Dettori in Listowel this year," Healy said in his **** column.

"It’s unfortunate, but if I’m to be honest, Frankie had one price and we had another price which we agreed last year.

"Of course, last year he got suspended after riding in Germany and couldn’t come, but he promised that he’d come this year.

"Unfortunately, we couldn’t meet in the middle, so that’s why Frankie won’t be coming to Listowel. We'll plough on and hope to have a bigger and better Harvest Festival than ever.

"Bookings have been strong, and I have to give a huge thank you to our sponsors, as we once again have a sponsor in every race over the week, as well as our loyal supporters who return year after year."

Seems like they offered the same money as had been agreed for 2022. A stupid insult imo. An "A" lister  would want good money to turn up at Listowel.

I remember one of the radio commentators talking about Dettori's nasty side - something you would never hear mentioned when he's riding on mainstream tv.

Jeez - he's been, by a very long way, the public face of horse racing for nearly 40 years.

Horrible phrase, but he is literally 'box office'. A prime product.
Boosts attendances wherever he goes and therefore you have to pay for what you get.

I haven't been to one of his farewells, but presumably he has to do a lot of public work, when not on a horse, on racedays.

I think that it's a case of knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing. He could have given a lot back by allowing little kids (and not so little kids) to see him in the flesh. Does he really need the extra money?

On that occasion he had three rides in front of a near 6,000-strong crowd, winning on the last of them, Allotrope, from which he obligingly performed his famed flying dismount.

I understand Dettori is a likeable person and jockey. Why is his retirement such a big thing? He's done his stink, and been rewarded well from it.

Does anyone really give a hoot whether Dettori is at Listowel (apparently too expensive), Windsor or Newmarket? Personally no; I like the sport he's in, but an accolade or celerity status? Not from me. I'd give more credence and appreciation to those who've their life time nursing and caring for the young, sick and elderly.

Is Dettori a Piggott, Eddery or Carson? To me no.

Happy Retirement Dettori!

Frankie has crossed into the mainstream, impossible. How many modern day jockeys can lay claim that? Most people in Britain could look at his picture and tell you whom it is. RB perhaps comparable. He would put hundreds, if not thousands on the gate. Just by him appearing.

The impact he has is not debatable. Sure, it could be tedious and seem indulgent for us who watch racing on a daily basis.
Report georgebakerfanclub September 7, 2023 4:03 PM BST
He is a greedy little man, Can't believe the way the media treat him, you would think he was an icon of the sport. Never mention his suspensions for drug abuse his failing to ride out on hundreds of rides if he can't win, hovering up all the high value races, while other Jockeys travel the country working 7 days a week, Jocking off Havlin on all off Gosdens classy horses. Bet the weighing room will be glad to see the back of him. My Guess he's so greed he won't retire if he can go on earning millions.

For me, auctioning off the trophies and effects that he had been awarded and had no interest in was much more questionable than this story. There is something disingenuous about smiling for award pics and then auctioning the award pieces off to the highest bidder. When you are in the super wealthy bracket.
Report impossible123 September 7, 2023 5:23 PM BST
^^Indeed. Imagine your trophy was one amongst the trophies he auctioned off? Was it for charity or self-pocket?
Report driver2 September 8, 2023 5:40 AM BST
When it comes to demanding appearance money and jocking off lesser riders, Lester Piggott (whom many of us idolize) quite rightly set the bar, so who are we to criticise Frankie? Great sportsman get paid according to the pleasure they give their audience and whether or not you enjoy Frankie's antics, he puts bums on seats, which, pardon the pun, is the bottom line.

The tracks must be offering the appearance fee, rather than FD's team asking for it. It takes time, effort and money to attend a meeting abroad which you wouldn't ordinarily be riding at. I don't see anything wrong with that at all. The tracks are going to make a bundle out of it as well. It's poor form to go public with private conversations in my view.

Auctioning some of his trophies for personal gain (unless for a charitable cause or destitution) is never on for me. I think it shows a degree of elitism and lack of appreciation. Personally, I do find it abhorrent; Dettori is only a sport personality not anyone of importance eg a medic dispensing free services restoring sight, prosthetic limbs, etc to the poor, sick, young and elderly.
Report driver2 September 9, 2023 12:42 PM BST
Wtf are you spouting about impossible? Never mind being a medic, a charity event that Frankie and Willie Mullins took part in last year raised 100,000 pounds which went directly to DAFA and was used to build a hospital in Africa. Barney Curley raised millions for his charity and Frankie has become involved with DAFA before and since Barney's death. Do your homework before you insult these people. And yes some of the proceeds from "the greedy little man" went to the charity!

I find it distasteful not going to a track to ride in the past but willingly turning up on his retirement year, and charging an appearance fee. Another distasteful and disrespectful behaviour of Dettori was to auction some of the trophies gained from his profession for personal gain, and not to a good cause of charity; I'd be offended if one of the trophies auctioned had come from my establishment.

I firmly believe Dettori ought to have followed his previous charitable deeds in his retirement year; Dettori is who he's because of horseracing, period!
