The RP are reporting major owners being subject to AFCs many stating that they will leave the sport.
Others stating that they have substantial means when challenged by bookmakers.
The daily examples being reported by all sorts of punters rightly putting pressure on the GC/Gov.
However here we have a RP employee recording bets of £240 ew and winnings of £4k at Brighton last week (R&FO).
Previous weeks reporting similar success.
He has at least 3 accounts Lads/WH/Star Sports. It would appear he has not been subject to checks.
Given the wealth of the average owner who have been affected this just dosnt add up.

Seems there have been several very rich gamblers highlighted in the recent RP articles for withdrawing due to ACs.

Of course, this is patently ridiculous - most of them could afford to buy a small island, let alone have a fecking bet!

But, being rich and therefore shrewd, they don't want anyone poking into all of their finances - which is quite right really.
Report stu August 21, 2023 10:32 AM BST
Seems 'affordability' has nothing to do with 'affordability' as the key point. Why one earth would a bookie query a guy they knew to be a multi-millionaire?
Report 1st time poster August 21, 2023 12:01 PM BST
because he might have been a billionaire last year and lost it all betting down to his last few millions, having or not having money is not the judgement of someone who has a gambling problem
if i were a taxman/fraud investigator etc i might be keeping an eye on these people going public that they,d rather leave racing than show some of their finances,
boris johnson mulyi millionaire could easily afford to bet alot of money but would imagine he,d rather have his right arm chopped of than someone have access to where his money comes from

That would be a fair argument, if the bookie had seem them betting and/or depositing absolutely vast amounts - and presumably also losing?

Nothing to stop anyone having a phone account with an on course layer and their bets being recorded in the on course ledger and as such not subject to ACs whatever form they may be when implemented by the GC or White Paper unless the on course layers are included in new legislation?
Report 1st time poster August 21, 2023 1:44 PM BST
on course not to keen on laying horse,s  to lose especially from those in the no,racing/punting  if you want is basically going back to where it was 35 /40 yrs ago, where laying horses for 99% of punters wasnt easily possible and racing was far better for it,not surprising theres plenty dont want that to happen
Report CagliariG August 21, 2023 1:48 PM BST
99% again? Change the record FFS as Quixall would say!!Crazy
Report 1st time poster August 21, 2023 1:57 PM BST
how many punters LAID horse to lose 40 yrs ago ?
far as i no to the average joe punter  the only way to lay a horse  was to back every other  horse in the race to win and we didnt have pundits/comms etc putting up horses they thought would lose, other than putting one horse up they thought would win, youve got to get this notion out of your head that betfair, dedicated racing channels etc form the maj of racing punters in uk ,their still a small minority in the overall great scheme
Report CagliariG August 21, 2023 1:59 PM BST
Btw 1st tp, if on course layers are exempt which they probably will be due to practicalities, then turning the clock back could work in favour of racing and the exchanges in terms of wealthier punters, maybe even the mid level.

Bookies could hedge into the exchange if they so wished which would improve liquidity and at the same time the Levy would benefit depending on how bookies are charged in future. There is nothing that I know of which should prevent the owners or trainers who want a punt from having a few accounts with on course layers and placing their bets with them when the bookies are on course.

As far as I am aware there is no restriction or requirement for a punter to be physically present for a bet to be regarded as on course, stand to be corrected if I missed something?

Far too many inaccuracies re the birch. The only way this goose is "winning" is his bookie mates looking after him. Ie 5-4 heads 5-4 tails and thereof. Even birch can't **** that up and lose.

1st tp you should get it out of your head that things have changed as dramatically as your head tells you.I suppose you think the days of Barney Curley stealing bookies money made him a hero to punters?

Maybe Gay Future and Flockton Grey were rare examples and fiddling was rare?

Btw Gay Future might have been a prophesy for the UK!!Laugh

All that stuff apart tantpis, you could be forgiven for thinking that the GC have already won, even given the OP.

The simple fact is that Bookies are not compelled to carry out ACs and it is purely voluntary on their part, it is obvious they have been cleaning house in anticipation of new legislation, and doing it badly.

Another simple fact is that if they have breached the expected new regulations before they are implemented they cannot be held liable for those breaches under any new regulations on the terms the GC want. No retrospective penalties in other words but bookies taking early action in expectation of even more draconian rules and avoiding ridiculous fines by a non elected body?

That is fair comment casemoney given the RPs dubious use of odds in articles.Do you remember their front page of years ago claiming a big pricewise winner which actually won around 6/4 after lots of non runners and 70p or so in rule 4s?

What about bookies themselves? Who and where do the on-course bookies bet with? If here, any AC from betfair? Similarly, high street bookies. Are bookies subject to the same stringent AC as punters? If not, why not? One rule for us punters, another for their mates then.

I'd like to know the above please if anyone is in the know. Much appreciated.

The high street bookies can restrict a new face. Is that not another form of AC? Maybe I'll try that next time for a response.

I firmly believe bookies are using AC to facilitate their ultimate objective ie to secure a detailed info of a punter's financial and betting activities; restricting or closing the account, if necessary.

Yet here we have a punter who is employed by yourself and therefore beyond reproach (presumably they have checked what he writes) who can not only get on for £240 ew winning £2k plus on a low grade race at a minor track yet still has at least 3 accounts with the biggest firms.

RP has been printing negative stuff about AC incessantly. However, RP has never printed the repercussions of fobt addicts and problem gamblers.

Bookies = Fobt = AC. But, bookies are prioritizing AC for horseracing. Pathetic and absurd!

Bookies = Fobt = New gaming licence (QED). If so, AC will be history for horseracing.
Report cacique August 29, 2023 8:05 PM BST
On the GC first check...

How is the rolling month/year for the triggered loss to be determined? continuously in time, or only to the time that horse racing is available in UK?

So the "clock" will only be on from flag fall of the first race to the weigh-in of the last race???

I would argue for the latter, because then the year effectively is a period of about 2 years..
and you will have days during the winter when racing is not on....
