You don't, but the amount traded is surely the best available guide. Any evidence that just as big a share of the current markets isn't "ping pong traders"?

Multiple possibilities - maybe the ecosystem just evolves (much like the online poker world did) - people/traders  get smarter , mug money is not replaced, profits therefore drop and even the clever ping pong traders realise they can use their skills to make even more money away from the exchange.
