Punters, not gamblers, there’s a slight difference.over the years adapt their lives around their punting, gambling.
They may not do this consciously, they slowly drift into this as a reaction to their betting.
The many things they might do.
Worker harder to get more pay,so they can bet more Look for business opportunities to increase income, maybe legally, illegally, taxable or avoiding tax etc. Hide money for their betting from everyone, this would include the affordability checkers. Wife’s do the same when buying clothes etc. Golfers lie about how much their new graphite carbon driver cost. Everyone lies about acholol intake to their doctor Etc etc etc
Most people adjust their lives to be able to enjoy their pleasures, hobbies, vices, pastimes etc
So no one wants to be asked about it,even though most will be 100% above board, they still don’t want to explain their live choices.
Why aren’t people who invest in shares or trade in shares being asked aswell(they ll never touch the city).
Given most hobbies can cost 5k a year.
Season ticket football plus away games. Golf, green fees, new equipment. Most sports watched, played ,total cost of whole day.
So I don’t think any checks should be even entertained if loses are lower than 5k a year.
Others will drift to oncourse has online will become to envaisive.like I said before, people adapt to their needs,
The safer gambling tools aren’t any good.
If you enter this world, you end up trapped in it as a potential problem gambler ,so people will avoid it.
My mate earns 50k a year, has 500k in bank.he worked 12 hour nights, got home Saturday morning last year and put a few bets on at 6 am.went bed 5 hours up and off to Doncaster, bet all day, then bet on dogs,he likes dogs at night.and ray winstons mates phoned him up and said you ve being gambling 16 hours,he said, yeah I ve worked all week and I’m having a day out enjoying myself. They blocked his account.
How does 100 quid a week limit for around Cheltenham etc,it just won’t work.
People will end up betting with the peaky blinders in back room pubs.
I'm not certain that punters will end up betting illegally. How many people would trust the so called black market to place bets? Maybe we're underestimating the number of punters that will cave in and disclose their financial situations to enable them to carry on punting in the fashion they have become accustomed to.
It's only a small percentage of punters that have a gambling problem in the first place. If they can't get a bet online or in a shop they will find another way of liberating themselves of their cash/ or find another addiction. Punters who have no 'stop' button are betting to feed their addiction not to enjoy having a recreational bet. You wont cure gambling addiction by introducing these daft thresholds but it does give the bookies an opportunity to weed out successful punters.
The whole thing stinks of trousering from all sides. The anti-gambling bodies are getting large amounts of money to line their pockets without producing any tangible results.

I doubt there will be many punters doing fiver or tenner yankees with these guys but loads of guys sitting in pubs will have a nifty on the fav if there have reached their limit with the bookmaker next door.

The fact that major bookmakers have been relatively quiet on this raises a red flag to me. I can only assume they think this is good for them. Lots of small staking punters in high margin products like bet builders. Loss of competition as smaller bookmakers exit mkt. what would hurt them is advertising bans. But as long as they dont happen they have a green flag to just get more and more people into the products, and get them playing on things they will never win on. The days when bookmakers had 4-5% margin will be more like 15% imo in a few years. And they will massively scale these smaller players. Basically the Ryanair model

Why would advertising bans hurt? They're just parasiting one another's customers, like cigarette firms used to do. They're only advertising because all the others do.
If there were a blanket advertising ban, the losers would be the smaller bookies and new entrants imo - the big firms would be left with no other competition to divide up the pie without bleeding millions on advertising.

For existing players yes up to a point - but the gamblers of tomorrow only get into it through advertising in most cases. Look at Paddy Powers Social media
Well if the tax was 10% as well it wouldn't take many smallish bets to test 'em out. You know you can't win at 10% so nothing to lose. Why didn't people doo it in the old days ? No computer in their pocket.
