i agree he is looking worse and i never thought that possible, but he will have some well handicapped horses they way its going, but i do need him to find a few winners as it gives the facade he is doing well and they start shorter especially after a win

There is a real touch of irony behind today's story in the RP where Charlie bemoans losing a talented horse to America.

With a stable of over 200 horses I've always thought the Johnston stable have massively underperformed when it's come to Classics and G1s over the years. Lots of wins but not as many group races as they should have. It's a long time between Mister Baileys and Attraction

They're fine if you want some boat running round Hamilton or Catterick over 1m4f+ but found out at the top table too often. They have some owners with deep pockets too so not quite sure what the problem should be.

placing of his horses are not good he ran one this week in a group 3 after winning a piddly race and it was 50/1 finished stone last, why would you do that when its not got any chance at all, just dosent add up and he will be losing lots more the way its going

Charlie Johnston has described seeing some of his best young horses sold to race abroad as "demoralising to say the least" as he prepares three-year-old Lion Of War to run his last race for the yard.

Johnston was speaking to the Racing Post for a major interview in Sunday's newspaper on the eve of Glorious Goodwood, a week he acknowledges is his most important of the year given the stable's traditionally strong record at the meeting. He also discusses his frustration at not being given the opportunity to train more of the most expensive yearlings, his surprise at just how different things have been since his record-breaking father Mark came off the training licence and his ambition to step up on the yard's high standards.

Johnston will cut short his trip next week to take a trip across the Atlantic to saddle Lion Of War in the Grade 1 Saratoga Derby Invitational, a $600,000 turf race for three-year-olds on Saturday. The Qatar Racing colt, second in the Golden Gates Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, will then stay to continue his career in the US in what has become a familiar frustration for Johnston.

"Every time you have a good winner these days someone will be straight on the phone trying to buy it," he said. "More than 50 per cent of the time it is to go abroad, and if you're lucky, they might leave the horse with you until the end of the season. We all know the economics for owners but it's demoralising to say the least."

'We're now without all of them'

Group 1 winner Dubai Mile also left Johnston in order to be campaigned abroad by Freddie and Martyn Meade, although plans are on hold for him following a setback this week, while injuries to other leading horses, notably Subjectivist, have left the trainer searching for a star.

"Dubai Mile has been sold and Subjectivist retired," Johnston reflected. "We also lost Dance In The Grass, who was injured ahead of the Oaks after she ran a nice race [to finish fifth] in the 1,000 Guineas. They were the three highest-rated horses we had at the start of the year and we're now without all of them.

"It's an old adage that the good ones get injured more frequently. There is truth in that, because the good ones will go into the red zone more frequently. I'm sure plenty of others are in the same boat with injuries and horses sold on. It's just something we have to combat and look to fill the void."

If you've got numbers behind you, you should be winning races and they do.

But not enough of the ones that actually matter.

He is not used to the pressure and been all over the press about goodwood and he has put that pressure on himself and I said yesterday I don’t think he will have a winner but throwing the darts I hope for his sake he has a few as it’s a big responsibility to carry on his young shoulders and people’s employment are relying on him so just for that I’m hoping he bags a few, somethings not right at the stables and I hope he can manage to turn it around

Charlie needs a winner and I just hope he bags one as it’s not been a good one his dad was champion trainer here for 9 years over 90 winners, should have shut the stable down weeks ago to try cure whatever is going around, the bonus is some well handicapped horses when they do come back

not sure you,d count 2nd and 3rd in a £150,000 handicap as losers either betting ew wise or prize money wise

you can have your horses in tip  top form, perfect ground, draw run of race etc etc and still get chinned in a 20 runner £150,000 handicap, won a group race last week

If you lay or back you ain’t bothered about any prize money he lost the 150 k race and he’s losing bigtime but the winning run follows a losing run it’s how bad that losing run carries on and he needs to break that run quickly

As pointed out he was really bragging how he was going into good wood and he’d been planning the year around the meeting, somebody needs to tell him he had terrible form for the last 2 months and should not have done the bragging up, Sod’s Law happens hopefully learns from it and carries on as I’ve done really well and hope he carries on the the family tradition of throwing darts and the odd one goes in

On a losing run of 35 had 3 yesterday at good wood 600 mile around trip, 2 short ones in 4 - 5 runner races all 3 beaten, that 35 losing run only covers 5 days, he has 15 runners this sat sun, so if you throw many darts you will get winners ….
