Only raced here once and won, shirley he's still better than this lot providing there's some pace on.

Not showing his old sparkle is he, that was very tame.
Report differentdrum July 11, 2023 4:06 PM BST
That's what I thought, but that was worse than pathetic, even allowing for the lack of pace. He has finished behind some really ordinary horses.

Time to retire because he clearly isn't good to win small field races like this, and he is no longer good enough for the big field handicaps.
Report howard July 11, 2023 4:07 PM BST
I would say fast ground and big field his thing but yes likely not as good too.
Report swiftynifty July 11, 2023 4:29 PM BST
not as good but handicapper will have his say double figure rating soon, sure he'll win again.

Who is newsboy?
Report Sir Epicure Mammon July 11, 2023 7:57 PM BST
Newsboy of the Daily Mirror a.k.a inarticulate and clueless Quentin Crisp imitator Dave Yates.
He's the tool with the cravat who loiters in the background when winning connections are interviewed on tv and gives his vacuous opinions from the racingtv studios   ' Um.....errr....um'

The strong balance of probabilities is that he is on the slow downgrade, and won't run catch up with his falling mark for a good while. Would we want to see him knocking around the gaff tracks a la The Tatling ? Would be a good horse to give apprentices run outs. And they won't do much knocking around a field. Duke Of Firenze is another one that springs to mind. I don't have a strong opinion either way, as long as the horse is still up for it and not suffering, I suppose there is nothing ostensibly wrong with keeping them going down through the grades.
Report swiftynifty July 11, 2023 9:29 PM BST
There wasn't that much wrong with his Ascot run 2 back when the stable was quiet, think you're writing him off way too soon.
Report Cider July 11, 2023 9:53 PM BST
That's what tends to happen with these top class sprint handicappers on the downgrade through age, they can look like they run to a good number in a decent race, but don't then look like winning when the race appears easier. They can suck you in, appearing to be well handicapped and then you can't let them go in case they fall in when you've stopped backing them!

my grail said he was a good bet but also that he would either win or not place

The photo finish equipment, located at the top of the Grandstand, is not on the finish line at York.

It is a couple of feet before the finish line and so runners stands side are favoured. Remember the

Hoiles 'Frankie thinks he's won it, I'm not so sure' . What other sport would put up with such a

situation?

Horses can make you look fools no doubt, but he did run very tamely that day at Pontefract but has improved every race since, still didn't think he'd quite got up yesterday to force a DH, i do like these older horses though that come back year after year to win good races.
