Looking at the runners for the first at Ascot brings back memories.  Did Paul Kellaway ride a hurdles winner also called Cash in the mid 50s in one of the top races of the season?
Seem to remember going down the back-entry with my gran's 3d ew.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, but not mid 50s. He rode him to win the Mackeson Hurdle at 50/1 at Cheltenham in Nov 1963. The horse was a 5yo, and had won 4 of his last 5 races. Buona Notte was the 9/4 fav and fell at the 2nd.

The race followed the Mackeson Gold Cup, won by Richard of Bordeaux, who was getting nearly 2 stone from 11yo top weight Fortria, who had won 2 of the 3 previous (and first) runnings of the race, and been 2nd in the other (all with 12-0).

@ged
You seem to be a knowledgable expert on these old horses. I have fond memories of a horse called Precipitant trained by Harry Blackshaw, cica late 50's early 60's. May have been ridden by his son and/or Joe Sime. Remember being at Recar when it won a seller when it was about 10 years old.
I have unsucessfully searched for a longtime to refresh my memory with no success
Maybe you could help?

5yo Salmon Spray was unplaced in that Mackeson Hurdle with 10-2. He'd win the Champion Hurdle in '66.

Buona Notte won the 3m novice chase at the festival in '64.

Antiar was 3rd in the Mackeson Hurdle, and won the Stayers Hurdle in '65.

Kelleway rode his first jumps winner in October 1958 at Taunton.

Cash was by the sprinter Hook Money.

Rigsby - he won a seller at Redcar, ridden by 7lb claimer Tommy Lappin, on Monday May 26, 1958, as a 7yo, and he was still winning races as a 10yo. I could probably tell you a bit more about him with a bit more time, though I don't have form books. Anything in particular?

He won the Welsh Stewards Cup at Chepstow as a 4yo when trained by EG Duffy at Tarporley. Duffy still had him at 5, Mason at 6, Blackshaw at 7 onwards.

Tommy Lappin - there's a name I'd forgotten
That date would make sense.
I went with a guy who I worked for who had never been racing before (I used to go with my father), and he had £5 (a fortune to me at that that time - I got a shilling an hour picking spuds and 10 bob was a fortune to me) on a 2yo ridden by Joe Sime because I told him it was a certainty. There again, it's my memory.
Happy old memories
Thank you ever so much

2yo was 2/5

I seem to remember something in Ken Payne's book about Lester recommending Lappin to him.

Slight correction to previous. Looks like Blackshaw got hold of him half way through his 6yo season, same owner (G Wilcox). He ran him over hurdles in Nov that year.

That Redcar seller had 6 runners, and he won at 3/1. It may not be the one you remember, he probably ran in sellers pretty much from then on, and no doubt won a few.
