When Breeding would appear to mean absolutely Nothing

Possibly a private sale?? Owner mother of trainer and not short of a bob or two. As for breeding, Well I am pushing on now but many years ago an old guy said to me "did you know that Caruso had a brother who couldn't sing a note."

Most who have had an interest in racing could have told you that breeding is an inexact science Onlooker and always has been.Citing Red Rum may sound boring but it is a good example.

You cite a grand dam,why when there are examples every single day of top sires and dams(dams sires) being represented in low grade fare e.g Navegaon Gate......Sire Frankel,dams sire Montjeu.......7th of 7 btn 43l in a Seller,these sorts are not at all uncommon!!

To be a pedant (again), it depends how you count it to be fair - all humans have 99+% of DNA in common or we wouldn't be human - if you had 0% of DNA in common with your brother you couldn't even be an earthworm.

But on the bits that DNA tests commonly count, i_agree is right (though I think it cannot be 100% between brother and sister, but might be wrong).

If I had a mare, I think I'd pair it with Noble Mission rather than Frankel on the basis you're getting the same ancestors for a tenth of the price.  Breeding it to Frankel would be a £200k gamble on the offspring inheriting the sire's racing ability.

Some sires that come from humble beginnings are described as "upgrading the mares" in other words, in general the progeny are better than their dams. For Frankel that is quite hard as the dams are often Group winners themselves. Noble Mission has been a rather disappointing sire if judged by wins on the flat. He has several crops now but has only once had more than 10 wins in a year.

Not a case of doing my homework... but if someone asked for a stallion that started off in the "championship" and ended up in the "premier League" then definitely these would spring to mind immediately.

Fairy King got Pharoahs delight in the Phoenix Park sales race, and then moved from Philip Myerscough's to Coolmore.. Not too sure if he got anything really good before he went to Coolmore but being a brother to Sadlers Wells and standing at Magniers brother-in-law certainly did him no harm.

Ahonoora got Park Appeal, Park Express and Indian Ridge, Don't Forget Me... Coolmore bought him but he died shortly after that.. really he could have been a super sire with long lasting legacy..

Indian Ridge possibly another one who flew under the radar a little ... Ridgewood Pearl, Cassandra Go...

Pivotal another one... started out as a cheap speed horse whose sire wasn't "fashionable"

Some good research there. I would nominate Havana Grey although he only has 2 crops. he has produced multiple black type progeny already, 9 having OR of 100 or more. Pivotal has been outstanding but he was by the Lockinge winner Polar Falcon.

I agree with Sageform. Havana Grey is certainly upgrading the mares he's getting sent.
