Ivan Toney banned:
Brentford striker suspended for eight months over betting

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been banned from football for eight months after he accepted breaking Football Association betting rules.

Toney has also been charged £50,000 and warned about his future conduct for 232 breaches of the FA's betting rules.

His suspension starts immediately, but the 27-year-old can return to training with Brentford four months before it ends on 17 September.

He will not be allowed to play again until 17 January, 2024.

Without knowing exactly what he’s betting on it seems pretty harsh. Did I hear on the news that they’re not allowed to bet on any football games?

How about they look at the owner of Brentford?

That seems a harsh rule. Understandable that they can’t bet in games there involved in, but other divisions or countries isn’t any harm.

Can Jockeys and trainers still back their mounts/horses?

Their ffs!

Kenbo - Trainers can back their horses and those of other trainers, Jockeys are not allowed to bet on races full stop

Cheers, Blackbarn. I thought jockeys could back their own mounts. It must just be laying them!

I've served loads of lower grade footballers in my time, all governed by the same rule. Mainly punting  accers on a coupon, never the teams they played for. Can't see the harm in it

It's not only the players but anybody associated with the team...
For example, a kit-man at a National League South club, even several levels lower, cannot have a cheeky fiver correct score bet on tonight's Newcastle Brighton game
Seems ridiculous to me

Also, I think Toney was having these bets a few years ago when he was at Peterborough?
And no suggestion he was betting on matches he was playing in

Compare that, as said above, to horse racing trainers being allowed to bet on their own and other trainers horses in the same race!!!

Anti-gambling campaigners criticised Toney’s punishment. The Big Step, which wants to end gambling advertising and sponsorship in football, posted four images on Twitter of Ivan Toney holding personal awards festooned with gambling advertising, alongside the message: “If you force young people to endorse addictive products, don’t be surprised if they use them.”

Matt Zarb-Cousin of the organisation Clean Up Gambling tweeted: “Forced to promote gambling as a footballer, authorities allowed bookies to turn the sport into a series of random betting events prone to match fixing – like time of first throw and number of corners – while player safeguards amount to sanctions in line with skipping a drugs test.
