Twenty years ago it included two handicaps. Ten years ago, three handicaps.

Now, five handicaps.

Perhaps they think we won't notice. But I expect when the crowd today is the lowest yet for the Guineas, they'll blame it on the weather.

Horseracing in the UK is owned by bookies; races are formulated for the benefit of bookies. It has been this way for at least 15 years.

Yet, the bloody hopeless authority (BHA) has yet to recognise it. What an incompetent bunch!!

100% agree with that post impossible.

It won't change unless there is a new funding stream for the sport.

I am afraid this horse has well and truly bolted. Not surprisingly those in charge want punters to lose, and how best can they do that? Yes, loads and loads of (preferably big field) handicaps where everything is supposed to finish in a line. Not rocket science. Yet we have pundits (dart thrower Kealy and his ilk) supposedly licking their lips at the prospect. The likes of Buick and Moore messing up in conditions races is just a nice bonus for the bookmakers.

I would be surprised if we saw a harder card all season, great 2000 Guineas though.

The Classic Meetings are not Royal Ascot where one gets the creme de la creme of equine competitors. The only positive is without handicaps races the role of the handicappers will be marginalised or rendered unnecessary and extinct fairly soon.

The BHA is similar to the FA - gutless and incompetent. They believe in same sh1t, different day scenario as long as their bread is buttered.

Congratulations on the other day - Alan

Hope you were on your Trainer's Double, too.  Happy

Onlooker,

Thanks, but I didn't back either of them. I almost never back my own horses, as it's impossible to be objective about them. As for the filly, she was having only her second career start on turf and we had no idea what to expect. The jockey made a difference, very laid back, but listened to what he was told about the horses and acted on it.

Only a bunch of people who love horse racing care about the 1000-2000 GNS these days. Horse Racing, make No mistake, is in BIG trouble. And with this government increasing inflation for their own greed and power, many people growing up will not be able to afford a day at the races, let alone bet on it.
Report sageform May 6, 2023 11:16 AM BST
Trident, loving horse racing is surely the point of it. Betting is a part of course, but racing could continue without it at a much lower financial level. Most of the costs of racing have been imposed in order to protect integrity on behalf of punters. It would be much cheaper to hold a race meeting if there was no betting.
Report formoftheace May 6, 2023 11:47 AM BST
Most punters prefer handicap races……quite a few media ‘pros’ prefer them…..
Report differentdrum May 6, 2023 11:54 AM BST
Losing ones might well do, and saying you prefer them doesn't mean you make a profit on them. I suspect half the time it's just bravado. Look at him he has got the big handicap winner, forget the fact he has probably had five darts at it.
Report impossible123 May 6, 2023 11:58 AM BST
I do like handicaps eg Schweppes, Lincoln, etc but not the sh1t that prevails every day esp awt. I was a regular with multiples eg yankee, super yankee even heinz, and very occasionally goliath but, not every blinking day. The bookies might not pay if you win on the odd occasion or insist on odious id verification.

I'd the BHA to grasp the idea of "less is more". Surely they understand, nope?

You, and most others, would not be on here - given that scenario - sageform

How did those - 'NO Betting' silly Sunday meetings do - in the 1990s?

Any update on the weather? Is it lashing down or desert?

Thank-you 'akajak'. I've no access to any racing channel.

Money eventually for Auguste Rodin almost assured then given the lashing the course is being subject to.
