Every now and then a horse that I'd been following would appear on the latest list and I'd think 'blimey, i thought horses lived forever. who knew ??'.

I realise you're thick as sh*t, hulk23, so I'll spell it out for you.
I was obviously referring to horses who were of racing age and had been racing relatively recently, like poor Winnetka, for example.
I don't think the "Scratchings (all engagements dead)" lists of horses included horses who had long since been retired, it was mainly horses who had been listed as being in training, ysfc.

It was horses that had engagements so would have included some young horses who had classic entries but had never got near the racecourse. Otherwise just horses who had upcoming entries so in training and not retired. Did they stop it with the start of 4 day entries ? In the old days even moderate horses could have multiple entries over the next 6 weeks or whatever it was. How long has hulk vs GEORGE feud been going on please ?

In the old days of the massive Buff-coloured Racing Calendar, Entries were made a minimum of 16 days - 22 days (No Sunday Racing) in advance.
Horse could, therefore run, mathematically, for up to 3 weeks after a Win carrying just a single Penalty.

Thank you salmon spray, still holding an entry would make sense, so obviously "scratched from the race".
And people usually associate that 'terminology' with American racing.
As for hulk23, we're actually good pals on here but he's a psychopath who enjoys trying to antagonise me every now and then. So I have to deal with him in the only language he understands.
