A price that the horses and connections pay for being involved,I remember to this day the first time I got upset to tears when a racehorse lost it's life.Abbey Arms pub in Colchester, the horse was Lanzarote.

I remember Lanzarote very well the famous apricot colours.

I backed 2 horses ante post at Cheltenham for the gold cup, Bannow rambler and Lanzarote, I needed one of them to win to get out, 1 fell and brought the other one downSad

My first memory of being sad in that respect Ronnie, was walking back to Goojerat Bks from the Abbey Arms.My mate Geordie Brown was telling us what had happened, tears streaming down his face.Until then I had never experienced the passion of horse racings meaning,a few years earlier one of our hunters ate deadly nightshade and died.

We loved him because he was ours but Geordie that day epitomised the real connection to a loved and admired racehorse.

Very first fatality I witnessed was at the Wolverhampton track many years ago when they raced on turf.
It was the hush that fell upon the course when the screens went up that made it so poignant.

Two notables were Killiney who was a superstar in the making, and Alverton who'd won a Gold Cup prior to his death at Aintree.

Said this before leif,I remember we saw the saddle being removed from Alverton, first time I saw a jockey sobbing.

He was hacking along until he came to Beecher's second time around where he somersaulted -horrible fall/demise.

With regard to Mighty Potter today, I initially thought he was kicked by Appreciate It jumping behind and into him.

Wonder if that did the damage? or was it just a bad fall?

Went back to check the RUK replay online and noticed a fence or two of the incident edited out.
It's up to them whether they do this, but never really seen it before.

A new approach?
Report penzance April 9, 2023 9:52 PM BST
Looked like he'd already done his leg.

Could talk about the old days all day long with out doubt the best horse to loose his life on the track was Golden Cygnet.Just watched with a large brandy him winning at the festival as a novice.

Ronnie.

I remember seeing one break a leg at York. No screens then They just shot it in front of you. Another armchair ride for Gordon.

Asked P Niven later regarding the rider “ah he’s ok it happens “ shrugging the shoulders…..”we all get a good kicking now and again “……ffs

I hate stubbing my toe…..

It's always sad to see the demise of a good horse so young die in a race. RIP Mighty Potter!

Was also quite shocked when Lanzarote was killed - just didn't think a fate like that could  meet such a horse. Nicky Henderson was assistant at Fred Winter's at the time. Have the following day's front page of the Sporting Chronicle in one of my scrap books - the sub heading at the top read ' LANZAROTE DESTROYED' -  imagine that nowadays!
