I remember Lanzarote very well the famous apricot colours.
I backed 2 horses ante post at Cheltenham for the gold cup, Bannow rambler and Lanzarote, I needed one of them to win to get out, 1 fell and brought the other one down

My first memory of being sad in that respect Ronnie, was walking back to Goojerat Bks from the Abbey Arms.My mate Geordie Brown was telling us what had happened, tears streaming down his face.Until then I had never experienced the passion of horse racings meaning,a few years earlier one of our hunters ate deadly nightshade and died.
We loved him because he was ours but Geordie that day epitomised the real connection to a loved and admired racehorse.

Very first fatality I witnessed was at the Wolverhampton track many years ago when they raced on turf. It was the hush that fell upon the course when the screens went up that made it so poignant.
Two notables were Killiney who was a superstar in the making, and Alverton who'd won a Gold Cup prior to his death at Aintree.

With regard to Mighty Potter today, I initially thought he was kicked by Appreciate It jumping behind and into him.
Wonder if that did the damage? or was it just a bad fall?
Went back to check the RUK replay online and noticed a fence or two of the incident edited out. It's up to them whether they do this, but never really seen it before.
A new approach?

Was also quite shocked when Lanzarote was killed - just didn't think a fate like that could meet such a horse. Nicky Henderson was assistant at Fred Winter's at the time. Have the following day's front page of the Sporting Chronicle in one of my scrap books - the sub heading at the top read ' LANZAROTE DESTROYED' - imagine that nowadays!
