The trouble is that the French can't wait to retire, as French pensions are very generous, compared to the UK. Macron has tried to appeal to their (non existent) better nature by telling them that as people are living longer, they'll have to wait until they're 64 to get their pension. As it looked as if he was going to get plenty of opposition by trying to get the legislation through parliament, he decided to use Article 49.3 which allows the President to ram the legislation through without a parliamentary vote. It's almost unprecedented that a President would do this for something so important and the opposition is outraged especially as Macron doesn't have a majority in parliament. It's probable that he will be subject to a vote of no confidence, which he will do well to survive and in the meantime the hooligans will continue rioting and the unions will continue striking. I lived and worked in the South of France for 15 years and as my brother in law used to say, "and the show carries on!"
Meanwhile we have raised the pension age to 67, sorry, 68 because apparently we can't afford it. France is rioting over a rise from 62 to 64.

We can 'afford' billions for track n trace, 20,000 illegals in 4-star hotels, an ever-growing army of snoopers and enforcers at various govt agencies and quangos but we can't afford anything that actually benefits Joe Public.
Most people who have worked from the age of sixteen doing physical jobs are bugged in their late 50's and early 60's and can't continue work until pension age. The fairest way would be that once you achieve 45yrs worth of PUTTING INTO THE KITTY ( National Insurance Contributions ) you should be able to claim your pension.

We literally can just print as much money has we need,it’s about keeping the system running,whilst making you having to go to work to live,which is probably about right.

Surely you have the capability of separating one thing from another?
If you disagree with state pensions, that does not mean anyone who can afford to pay a trafficker to get them half way across the channel has the right to get to live here and unconditional access to all of the lucrative benefits. It's not just about the money is it, dealing with them is resource intensive. And those resources are provided by the state and civil service, who can't manage to look after the people that are already here.

Emmanuel Macron is a former member of the Francois Hollande government who managed to defeat Marine Le Pens bid for the presidency with his Renaissance 'movement'. Which was something cobbled together by the French establishment to avert what would have been France's version of Brexit with Le Pen.
THe pensions age rise is a failed policy to tackle government spending. So to all the guys in the yellow vests its another excuse to hit the streets.
As for immmigration. Holing up a couple of hundred potless people in the Holiday Inn in Cannock Chase, of all places, seems utter lunacy.
Whatever your views on immigration the simple facts are these.
This country has an acute shortage of workers to do essential jobs. Nurses, Road workers, Farm workers etc. We have an aging population and now by some miracle we have a ready supply of people coming over here on rubber dinghys.
Instead of bunging E500m to Macron to stop them coming over why not get the Army to build some temporary accomodation on some of the many disused airfields in Southern England. Find out who is up for the necessary and get them working.
By and large these immigrants are young men and want to work. I doubt many have any knowledge of the intricacies of the benefits system. And believe me negotiating your way around what used to be 'Job Center' these days is hard enough with English as your first language.

The average age of the uk citizen is over 40. Meaning the vast majority are pretty much ruled out from doing the essential jobs required to keep the country running.

You have no idea how it works do you. It is essentially a black market travel agency. The people aren't desperate in the sense that they have no other choice. They are desperate as a life feeding off the UK teat is a far better option than doing manual labour, or whatever they can get at home, for a relative pittance and little to no welfare state in their current existence. It's a rational choice (for them), as they have nothing to lose aside from the cost of the ticket.

Last years increase was almost exclusively down to Ukrainian refugees. Which I doubt even Cider is against. Plus Hong Kong refugees fleeing covid restrictions in China.

In addition there are a similar number incarcerated in UK prisons which makes them the largest non UK national group detained at His Majestys Pleasure. Tho it should be added they werent all imprisoned over the course of last year.
Again I maintain it would be better to get in on the ground floor with these people in Northern France. If they want to come over here, do it on our terms. Sort out the wheat from the chaff as it were. If they want to work here let them at it. Lord knows we need it.
