Usually a good meeting for bookies as a change of ground usually brings around some strange results and a lot of good horses flounder on it.

On the plus side Constitution Hill has won on heavy and State Man on soft so they should run their races but some of the Novice and Handicaps would look like a lottery on really bad ground.

Really enjoyed the Tied Cottage and Master Smudge type years as a spectacle...still remember Peter Bromley snarling out"It's a war of attrition!"as they turned in the Sun AllianceHappy

The novice clerk of the course gives the going as soft this morning with a going stick reading of 6.3.

The last time they raced on the Old Course with a reading of 6.3 was the first day of the meeting last year, when the going was officially good to soft, but Constitution Hill and three subsequent winners that day ran faster than standard time.

Very much a wait and see job, but I won't be lumping on soft ground performers in the hope that we're being given accurate info.

thanks for that anorak !

Lot depends o rain they get today /overnight. Cheltenham racecourse seems to have its own little micro climate. If it blew thro with minimal rain then the ground will dry very quickly with the very high winds blowing.
Going Wednesday last year Bumper appeared to run in a heavy ground quagmire but less than 48 hours later they kick off in triumph with Good To soft.

Recall a good few years back Cheltenham Town FC football match was abandoned on the saturday due to waterlogging yet the festival started on the following tuesday  on Good To Soft
Report Movewiththetimes March 13, 2023 12:10 PM GMT
The form will hold if its soft, like Geoff says strong winds today and good drainage and hopefully be good to soft, worse thing is sticky ground, only bookies want that.

Interesting that Anorak, sounds like i might have wasted 6hrs going through last night looking for very soft/heavy merchants.

The 6.3 is given as being the highest reading.

Check TURFTRAX (not the amateur CoC) http://turftrax.co.uk/going_maps.html then view going report

You will see the extent of the soft as distinct from the good to soft.

Not sure I would be looking to favour something that may be a G/S beast especially on day 1.

Facile Vega won the bumper in swamp like conditions, iirc the race itself was in doubt. A couple of days later it was back to quickish going for the Friday, with A Plus Tard bolting up the hill.
Report Cider March 13, 2023 1:27 PM GMT
Only genuine soft or heavy if there is immediate heavy precipitation beforehand, imo.
Report thinker March 13, 2023 4:20 PM GMT
for those who are interested raining very hard in chelt time 4.15 will ride slower than good/soft

Could be a glue pot which will be worse than anything.

Geoff,

He must have put the end of the going stick in his pencil sharpener - 6.3 down to 5.7!

'Change of ground' - from what ...

Most of the Irish Form is on Soft and Heavy anyway - as every year.

You would, therefore, think that dryish Good ground were more likely to be an inconvenience.

Normally good to soft at the Festival on the first day- I can't remember no good in the going description on the opening day for a while and it's soft tomorrow is what I mean, the Irish horses would be at an advantage on the easier ground I would think.
Report punchestown March 13, 2023 6:13 PM GMT
By the way plenty of form for the Irish horses on good and good to soft this season so not a given that they'll go on really easy ground.

One horse i think the softer ground will really suit is Mahler Mission in the last, about 8l to find with the odds on i think the test will suit him better.EW good thing?
