Why do people say All Weather racing is a mugs game?

There are benefits in following AW so long as you are selective in which races you look at. The leading flat trainers all run horses on AW tracks and since the new surface was laid, Southwell seems to be favoured by many. Regulars will know that I am a big follower of Andrew Balding's stable and he has embraced the opportunities to run well bred young horses on a predictable surface with positive results and a level stakes profit in 2023. I have no interest in class 6 handicaps or 0-50 classifieds which are mainly a lottery contested by bad and unreliable horses.

All Weather been ruined .........too many top trainer having runners all the fun has gone ....used to go over a 100 times a year at the turn of the millenium hardly ever now................ its as dull as ditchwater..........

gone are the days of the obligatory seller or claimer where you had to work out which trainer wanted to claim someone else's whilst running their's down the field waiting for next time. No names mentioned of course, but far more interesting than the total guesswork required with the 200,00G maidens all turning up,  at least for betting purposes.

I try and give it as little attention as possible. Clearly it has gone way past it's original intention of keeping the show on the road.

I don't know if what you are saying is correct, but I want much more out of the sport than simply following a market. It's nice to get a reward when you have actually put some effort in to warrant that success. Presumably, 'mug's game' is a reference to bottom of the barrel racing and the likelihood that the further down the scale you go the less likely the form is be upheld.

If the Uk continues to get as much dry weather as it has been, there will be alot more all weather racing on the daily cards in the future, which is definitely not going to do the industry much good.

La Estrella, a remarkable horse considering he had legs like glass!! Most horses with such legs race once and that's it. Unbelieeeeeevable Don!

Punters are always blaming poor or low grade racing for losing money , they should all look back to their p/l for all the festivals when apparently the handbrake is never applied and it's far far easier to make money.

Over 95% may then find it's horse racing in general that's costing them money whatever the grade.

the form is more reliable than on grass courses with variable going, worn turf etc. Most trainers use AW surfaces for the majority of their work as they are in the same boat as the tracks. Grass is either too firm or too wet. I can only see one direction of travel and I was a big doubter when it started.

For me the fibresand surface that was at Southwell totally put me off all weather racing.
Things happened there that defied belief, sort of like an equine version of a bad acid trip.
I very rarely bet now on A.W. Maybe a Wolverhampton pot to amuse myself if nowt else to do but that's about it really.

The first course I ever visited would make a perfect AW track...Bath. The going is always hard and the fields are always small these days. They could install an AW track on the inside of the turf course. Still have Turf fixtures but when the going looks like it going to be Firm/Hard, they could switch the fixture(s) to the AW. It would give Trainers in the South West an AW course on their doorstep and I'd enjoy seeing a few Racing League fixtures staged there too.

Whippin, the bottom bend at Bath already needs a cycle track type camber because it is so tight so how on earth could you put AW inside that?

AW do me a favour, it is run for bookmakers to keep things rolling in case of bad weather but because it was so profitable for them they do it all year

No punter cares about modern bookmakers sparrow and rightly so.

All weather isn't my first love but it has to be said there's a betting strategy fit to match ALL categories of horse racing whatever the class or surface , punters need to be multi-dimensional these days and not rigidly sticking to the same selection & stake criteria..

There's a lot more to horse racing that just selecting one of the front three in the betting.

Exactly hayden, we all have our different ways of doing things and that is how it should be.

I don't know about following a gamble but this winter has been horrific for me landing on AW exchange drifters. It's soul destroying putting hours of effort into finding an angle that you think might give you an edge only for this site to tell you in the pre-race market that you have no chance. No good saying drifter sometimes win. On the AW they just never do.

So only bet in the last 2 minutes before a a race.

I see your point Sparrow. No watering system and the prospect of more hot dry weather in the future. Switching the turf to an AW surface (Tapeta would be my first choice) could be an idea worth considering....it will be interesting to see the field sizes at Bath this season.
