Definitely one to watch. It's an  excellent film.

not another war movie ffs, I still haven't seen Schindler's List, I'm not going to start with this one

All WW1 films re good though, no many I havnt seen

My school showed us the first version and I'm still traumatised after 60 years.

The original was a fantastic film, no glorification of War in that, the 2nd German version more recently was pretty cr@p i thought, think this will be a more updated version of the original i hope.

I watched 1917 and thought the soldiers looked a bit too clean considering their terrible existence in the trenches.

Really good.  As others have said, the original was pretty bleak; seeing it from the German side is bleaker still.

I have watched it twice. Exceptional film. Watch it.haunting music. Gruesome battle scenes and lots of thought provoking

If you like that one then i recommend TESTAMENT OF YOUTH. Read the book first if you can

I haven't seen that yet but I did see another film that won a few gongs namely "Banshees Of Inisherin" though recently, it is on Disney+.

Despite my strong Irish roots I thought it was mediocre at best, maybe a 4/10 job without the thumb at a push.

Will definitely watch, probably tonight..thanks all.  Will check out Testament of Youth.

Banshees Of Inisherin had a lot of Hollywood schmaltz,

the finger cutting got a bit carried away otherwise had quite a few laughs for a dark film !

I seen it a few Months ago and i can not recall one scene from it.....Trust me its average.

A very good version of the superlative novel......and as it is not British nor American ,not infected with box ticking nonsense.....

Saw it a while ago and don`t really remember it. I don`t get what the fuss is about.

What amuses me is how the same story gets repeated and more often than not is a success at the box office and people try and claim it’s success is down to the public’s resonance with the futility of war.

It isn’t, it’s because humans are engrossed in the drama of war.
Is it really better to cower in your bed grasping at the bedclothes trying to hold on for another day in old age, or to die with your boots on?

All this rubbish about it being a warning from history….sure like the last one, the one before that or the one before that or….
Don’t get too comfortable, your time will come.

Yes, there’s always an audience for it.

You only need to look how many war films there are. There’s practically one for every battle.

Screenplay miles away from the book and not fit to be compared with the 1930 original in my opinion.

I first read the book in the early 70s as part of O level English Lit,it made a lasting impression.Little did I know that a couple of years later I would spend 3 consecutive birthdays in a trench in Germany.It was pretty miserable at times being cold and seemingly permanently wet and tired but we knew it was only for a few weeks each time.

We were never starving or in fear of incoming shells or bullets,no rats or disease and no maggots in our food nor rotting corpses polluting our air.In terms of training for war it was a poor substitute for the real thing but for anyone who had read the book it  take a huge leap of imagination to comprehend the horrors.I hope to see the film but would recommend reading the book before or after.

Definitely worth a watch and options on Netflix to have German with English subtitles or dubbed-on English all the way through. Agree with cropstick about different interpretation towards the end (couldn't see any butterflies).

Thought there was one clunky bit (without spoiling it) where a soldier asked if the cutlery had been brought..didn't sound authentic in the circumstances.  Don't know if anyone else thought the same?
