When you're forty, and you find yourself on a 77-rated mare ploughing through a fence at Leicester in front of the smallest attendance I've ever seen at a racecourse, it probably feels like a good moment to question why you're still doing this.

Injury alright, or fear of. He's right to do what he's doing as he wouldn't be able to give 100% worrying about another fall.

He's always come over well and I'm guessing it's pretty certain he'll get a gig in the media,there's far less deserving cases out there slurping the gravy so good luck Tom.

He said that he had a concussion 2 weeks ago and was shaken up in his recent fall and remembered the words of his family. "You will know when the right time arrives". The prospect of a really bad fall at Cheltenham might have hastened his decision. I always liked him as a jockey and he was a good interviewee. David Pipe will be on the phone for a while to replace him.

Actually thought he was riding really well this season , but having had 3 concussions myself , (2 horse , 1 rugby ) and cost the NHS a fair few bob in scans etc , I absolutely think he has done the right thing .You only need to look at football,rugby , boxing to know that there is a limit to how often you get away with it .

He was one of the few jockeys sensible enough to say if you break the rules you should be DQ'd. No one should feel comfortable finishing second to a jockey who has cheated.
I always thought he gave horses decent rides, he should do well in the media, seems far more natural in front of the cameras than his father ever was.

Concussion taken far more seriously nowadays what with the dementia links etc.
Bad knock recently has done for his riding days.
Sensible decision long term I'd say.

Tom was on the panel that brought in the new whip rules.I wonder was the weighing room the same?

I remember during the build up of the 1990 Grand National the BBC did a feature from the Scudamore household and Tom was playing a horse racing game on Commodore Amiga (controlling a runner in the Grand National from an overhead view). Still got a VHS tape of that day. Roll forward 33 years and he has now navigated a successful career as a jockey, shocking as it seems to have flown by. Good luck to Tom in whatever he does as always came across as a nice intelligent guy. From a media career POV I think he takes after his father a bit too much and will need some training...

dont think a punter in the land ever thought their improved their winning chances with scu on board no better or worse than 50 others

Football pundits can dig,as can many other commentators on other sports but for some reason racing pundits don’t have the bottle……

The great thing about Tom Scu from a punter's point of view was that he never hampered a horse's winning chances, intentionally or otherwise. From that point of view he was better than at least fifty others I can think of.

There was an interview with Timmy Murphy the other week in the RP and he was asked did he consider becoming a trainer after retiring from the saddle. His reply was pretty much: No because I didn't want to give away the money I'd earned!

Apparently now works as a work rider for Aidan O'Brien.

Tom Scu said that ride was bent, he stopped it because the trainer told me there was another race in mind.

Wasn't Pipe involved in that notorious monster gamble, There Is No Doubt? circa 100/1 into favourite. If I remember rightly, it was quite a question around who was training it. It ran in someone's else's name, hence the opening prices but had actually been trained at the Pipe barn. Something like that.

just had a quick look at that race and Martin Pipe had the 2nd fav who veers badly at the off and unseats the rider

Yep that's right, the Pipe one helped make the market! I think it was David in a relationship with the winner's official trainer or rider. Then at some point later it officially moved to the Pipe barn. It was a big story in racing at the time.

only channing seemed annoyed at horses with 8 duck eggs pishing up with 3 stone in hand in 20 runner handicap
