A "high-altitude object" has been shot down over Alaska in the past hour, the White House has said.
Spokesman John Kirby said the object was "the size of a small car" and was over a sparsely populated area at the time.
President Joe Biden took the decision to shoot down the object, which was of unknown origin, Mr Kirby said.
It comes after the US shot down a Chinese balloon over its territorial waters last Saturday.
Speaking at the White House on Friday, Mr Kirby explained that the object over Alaska was travelling at 40,000ft and could have posed a threat to civilian aircraft.
He added that its debris field was "much, much smaller" than the balloon shot down last week off the coast of South Carolina.
Intelligence officials became aware of the object on Thursday evening, Mr Kirby said.
He said a fighter jet had approached the object and assessed it was unmanned, and this information was available to Mr Biden when he made his decision.
Officials have not yet determined whether the object was involved in surveillance, and Mr Kirby corrected a reporter who referred to it as a balloon.

I suspect this object will be some yankee nutter trying to prove a point of some sort as sounds pretty amateurish and asking to be shot down.

He said the latest object "violated Canadian airspace" and was shot down over Yukon in north-west Canada.
Both Canadian and US aircraft were scrambled to track down the object which Mr Trudeau says was taken out by a US F-22 fighter jet.
It is the third object to be shot down over North America in the last week.

Weather balloons my foot! The Chinese are trying to monitor ground events and gather military info. Sudden appearances have given the Chinese game away. A bunch of arrogant plonkers; more money than sense.

China has one of the most advanced Global positioning Systems out there and satellite numbers only second in total to that of the Yanks.

People can go to the moon and back. What I find astounding is USA cannot identify a flying object in the sky. How absurd? Why have they not considered "capturing" the object and bringing it down for a good look?
what a load of bollax for years they denied anything about ufos .......now they cant wait to tell us about how many they have shot down ! why the sudden change in tact !
