"The last day it ran". Why say it with five words when you can say it with three.

Wow the forum is full of people who went to Eton it seems, more than half the English people I know have difficulty speaking their own language and that's not been sarky its simply a fact. Surely we are blessed to have such posh people among us poor plebs....

I accept it now (the last day) rather than “last time out”
What rankles is last time IN Ascot… or wherever it is  AT Ascot.
I go shopping IN York, but I go racing AT York.

Now there’s my petty quibble!
Report eric_morris February 5, 2023 7:41 AM GMT
'the back of the last' guaranteed to get on your nerves after the 100th time. No offence to Alice but she says it a lot. It is her equivalent of Fitzy's 'this horse'. Suppose we all have our over-used phrases.

Instead of the "last day", other options are "on his most recent outing", "last time out", or "latest running". Perhaps Lydia can help.
Report Tattcorner April 25, 2023 5:13 PM BST
When did "100 per cent" come into usage? Seem to notice it more and more.

Especially the footballers in response to a question...e.g. "Were you happy with that penalty decision?"

"100 per cent, Gary..."

Paul Merson came out with this beauty after playing for Arsenal one afternoon.

"The belief the boss had in us was unbelievable. "
Report SlippyBlue April 25, 2023 5:38 PM BST
Workrider, I didn't go to Eton but I did play against them at cricket back in the day. It didn't work out very well for us and they called us "guttersnipes" which was a bit unnecessary I thought at the time.
Report sparrow April 25, 2023 5:41 PM BST
Slippy, not that Eton wall game then?
Report SlippyBlue April 25, 2023 5:43 PM BST
No, never played that Sparrow. I was a rugby man but did like a bit of cricket occasionally. I went to Eton just for the experience of having a look around there but they completely demolished us.
Report sparrow April 25, 2023 5:51 PM BST
An experience to be remembered I would think slippy but I myself only recall being in Eton once some 40 odd years ago when a friend was running a pub there on relief. Nice little town to look around though.

slippy/sparrow

only been to Eaton once about 35 years ago, I stopped at the castle in Windsor for the royal meeting; castle hotel obviously not THE castle

won a few quid one day and walked over the bridge to Eaton had a lovely italian meal, but what I remember more than anything about Eaton was a paper stand selling the evening standard, you took your paper and left the money.

wouldn't dare do it in Darlo they would pinch the money and the papers to sell.

Slippy did the young lad get a good ovation at Sellers Park last weekend

regards Ronnie
