I used to work for the Racing Post years ago and Cheltenham was a near-mystical experience for me. Later I worked for various notorious tabloids and I used to take time off for the whole festival - and it usually paid to do so (I'd have a week off for Royal Ascot as well).
But as the years have gone by and despite a few good touches and so on, I have come to dread it almost. Weeks of sh*te and odd results beforehand as horses are prepared and then boom, too much of everything happening too fast and the assessor hasn't got that much of a clue about Irish raiders either. If I don't have a good day on the Tuesday it's like a mini St Swithin's day: the rest of the week is reliably a disaster area. Seeing the Cheltenham talk on here I got that dread feeling again and thought: no, don't bother. Like Christmas, you'll look up and it will be behind you, leaving everyone broke and miserable in its wake. A mate of mine used to say: THE QUICKEST WAY TO DOUBLE YER MONEY IS FOLD IT OVER AND STICK IT BACK IN YER F*CKING POCKET!

That’s a shame as it sounds like you used to look forward to it years ago. I’m surprised you found it easier to make money in years gone past as most punters and bookies I know think it’s much easier to turn a profit over the last 5-6 years due to field sizes.
I personally love the magic of the festival and would happily go and just watch the racing even if I didn’t have a bet.

chelts and royal ascot are 2 events that can be enjoyed with zero betting.

It rather depends on why you bet. I enjoy trying to predict a winner or a placed horse in a race and find it easier as the class of horse and race rises excluding handicaps. However on a quiet Tuesday I might still have a bet for the FUN of it. Why do you spend money on alcohol, restaurant meals, holidays, clothes or what ever. Presumably because you enjoy it and can afford it. I treat betting just the same and have done for 65 years. If I have learned anything it is to look at owners and breeders on the flat and stables in form over jumps. If you expect to turn a consistent profit then you need to be very dedicated and disciplined.

The National Hunt Championships and there are 9 handicaps, 3 mares only races and the X-country race.
You can actually have a decent bet if you want at the festival. There is still great value to be had. In small fields if you perm some seelctions at the morning prices (and have BOG) you can get great value for a small stakes bet that with a bit of luck pay a decent payout if a couple of favs falter
Annual member for 10 years plus and stopped going when four day festival started and expenses also hit four figures . Since then have enjoyed it equally well and with a lot more success than previously . Yes the exchanges played a part , but equally discipline is much easier . That said I only bet small .

1 went for a dozen yrs in heady yrs of best mate,denman,kauto,big bucks, inglis drever etc golden age and irish were just about sharpening their pencils before the mullins.elliot battalions started to have multiple entries /winners
starting fresh now ,with costs involved not sure there,s that pull there to go ,with tv available at home

Havent been since Desert Orchid won in 89 - hard to beat that day so will probably not go again - my wife doesnt like the jumps
and just about puts up with flat racing so will try and go to likes of Goodwood or Ascot.
Love the festival but no doubt 4 days has had an effect, my first memory of Chelts was getting in from school and watching a horse called Electric winning
picked it out before the start didnt have a penny on it but still gave me a great feeling, hooked from there on in...
