I was told by an area manager for baldy shops the answer to the same question, as far as  his firm are concerned...
If the punter either refuses to comply, or his income stream he chooses to show them looks insufficient to support his staking...
Then, he will be banned from any future betting with them but still be given his outstanding winnings

Every punter in the UK should stop punting and going racing for one month…..

Surely a threat of the small claims court with all correspondance copied to  paul.scully.mp@parliament.uk should do the trick for the punter.

Ronnie, the area manager told me that all the punter had to do was show a bank statement showing ins and outs totals for a few months
Now, if the customer deals a lot in cash, as I do, and the bank account sums look as though you are betting beyond your means, then they would stop you from future betting but pay you out what you are owed
Don't know what would happen if you just refused on principle to provide any bank info

The Small Claims Court per se no longer exists, but there is a process colloqualiy called that.

But IMO all the lawyer for the bookie would do is tell the court they are entirely happy to pay out once the Anti-Money Laundering conditions of their licence are met, and the punter would be sent him minus his fee with egg on his face.

I had a pick up of just over 8k back in December from a multiples bet on venetia Williams horses one Saturday
Got paid out part cash, rest on card in the baldy shop I use, within an hour of the last winner
No income proof asked for, but it later triggered the question I asked the area manager I wrote about above

Nice bet Reg well done Ronnie will know far better than me these days but I would say a decent drag will be ok with a regular customer. Think these days it's the new customer or problem customer what the computer will say no.

Surely if nothing is mentioned when placing the bet, there can legally be no issue when collecting any winnings? You cannot change the terms & conditions half way through the contract!

No-one mentioned anything when you paid your salary to the bank, but if you wander in and ask for £10k in cash they will ask questions before they let you have it.

Yes but you will get it after answering a few security questions! The bookies are asking for certain things after the bet has been placed. It will all blow up in their faces at some point.

Agree 100% with DG, they should of asked for info BEFORE bet was struck, I would be straight to solicitor as it doesn't  even sound legal to me.

I suspect the reason they don't askon deposit / before bet is struck is that they are not legally required to (as in they can satisfy their AML conditions by just checking withdrawals) and while it is not a legal requirement, no-one wants to be the first to demand it, knowing that it will deter new signups and send them to rivals without such checks.

Should just add this to the long document of 'reasons not to bet with bookies' file.

I do not see how the same does not apply to shops as to online - if you went to a Lads shop to place a 1p EW Goliath and they told you that you couldn't place it unless you did full background checks in case you won £1m, you would walk over the road to Hills and place the bet there, surely?

Longbridge, If a man walks in off the street and places a bet without being asked about providing any documents ( must happen a million times a day ) how the feck can you ask for documents after the bet has lapsed ???   I find it incredible, 95% of shop punters wont even had heard of Accountability checks and that this practice actually goes on is beyond me.

All shop staff know which of their regulars can and cannot afford to be betting. The latter are usually shouting at the screen and blaming the jockey!
