Yes I remember the one eyed Belper.

Odin's Quest declared at Newbury Wednesday 1.45 is also one eyed, well named by his owner/breeder Chris Stedman.

Odin was a one eyed Norse God

Ron Hutchinson a regular pilot back then, used to wear blinkers and pulled like a train iirc.
Report blackbarn January 16, 2023 9:04 PM GMT
Punchestown - You sure about blinkers and pulling?. He certainly didnt wear blinkers in the C AND S or on lots of other occasions I saw him at Brighton (He certainly didn't need blinkers for one eye!! nearside??) AND I think I remember him being ridden quite aggressively.  Lots of old Brighton favourites so maybe the wrong horse.

belper was a regular winner at  my home course(brighton) with bobbin ron(hutchison  aboard
Report Sir Epicure Mammon January 16, 2023 11:27 PM GMT
Belper was very well named after Ronnie, 4th Baron Belper , who lost an eye during military service in 1944.
He was racing manager to Stavros Niarchos and owner of Ces winner Persian Lancer.

The one eyed wonder might get a mention tonight on Bangers and Cash (8pm U&Yesterday channel).  Lord Gerald Fitzalan-Howard is selling his beloved 1965 Land-Rover. It is called Belper!!!.  I bet it is due to the family connection.
Report workrider January 9, 2025 7:05 PM GMT
Obviously hard times ahead for the poor guy selling that..
Report blackbarn January 9, 2025 7:36 PM GMT
According to reports, he is a character and likes to be on TV. He is direct line from the family of the Dukes of Norfolk.
Report workrider January 9, 2025 7:43 PM GMT
Every time I walked in Arundel as I passed those huge gates I thought of the Duke and his wife such huge players back in the day....

Did you work at the Castle Stables, Workrider?.     During the summer holidays 1962 ish, four of us cycled from our village in Mid Sussex, the 25 miles odd to Arundel to visit the castle. I was 10. The castle was about shut!!!!!  It was a Monday.
Report workrider January 9, 2025 7:52 PM GMT
No blackbarn, I had a friend who lived in Arundel who I used to visit , he is no longer with us RIP...

Belper was originally owned by Sarah Fitzalan-Howard, daughter of Lavinia, Duchess of Norfolk. Lavinia was born Lavinia Strutt, sister of Ronnie Strutt, who became Lord Belper. So 'Belper', the man, was the owner's uncle. Ronnie won the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham in 1934 on Crown Prince, owned by his stepfather, Lord Rosebery.

Sarah's sister, Jane, became Lady Herries, who trained Celtic Swing, amongst others.

Workrider you are on first name terms with all these jockeys and trainers, you must be well connected.
Report kennethturrell1 January 10, 2025 10:03 AM GMT
Someone I used to know worked for Lady Herries with her partner when she was training at Anmering Park.

When her car kept breaking down and became unreliable Lady Herries presented her with a fairly new car to use without any cost.

When Lady Herries attended evening stables her butler used to carry a lot of carrots on a silver tray from which she was able to feed to her horses.

Anmering Park can be seen from the A27 and it is part of a 6,500 acres private estate part of the Duke of Norfolk's land it used to have a 1.5 mile round gallop which John Dunlop used a lot at the time.

Suzy Smith trains there at present.

I just googled Lady Herries and didn't know / remembered she had died.
Took a look at her racing stats and see that she was well ahead of her time , winning the Caulfield cup Down Under in 1998 !

Kenneth, Billy Knight was training there for 10 years or so before moving to Newmarket

Report workrider January 10, 2025 11:05 PM GMT
G Hall I would say I'm just one of those lucky people who for one reason or another seem to be able to mix with everyone , and yes I do have plenty of friends highly connected...
