Magical Max gave it a good shot from the front, probably helped by his high draw and racing close to the rail, but alas couldn't quite hang on, getting collared in the closing stages.

Day 191

Shot Of Love, 1pt EW @ 16-1, 4.30 Wolverhampton

Shot Of Love ran well on his latest start over 7f at Kempton to finish third, when his effort might have wanted marking up based on how the race panned out. He's been weak in the betting today, perhaps largely due to him having to prove his stamina over 9.5f, though his yard also run the shorter-priced Favorite Boy, and the betting may be informative close to the off.

Shot Of Love won over 8.5f at Epsom in September, and there is some encouragement in his pedigree for longer trips with Dynaformer close up on the dam's side. He has the inside draw to work from so hopefully he can get into a good rhythm saving ground around the inner.

Struck Gold, 1pt EW @ 11-1, 8.00 Wolverhampton (4 PLACES)

Struck Gold is another with his stamina to prove being upped in trip to 8.5f this evening, but is of interest back at this track having run well on his previous three starts here over 6f in June / July, including on the latter occasion when never too far away from a wide draw before being run down late on.

There are mixed messages in his pedigree regarding longer trips as he's by No Nay Never but out of the Oaks runner-up Yesterday. He has a nice draw to work from in four and hopefully can at least maintain his 100 % frame record at Dunstall Park.

My other selection, Shot Of Love, was never in it, and with the runners still tightly packed turning for home, he could only plug on into 5th place.

Day 192

Streetscape, 1pt EW @ 25-1, 5.05 Dundalk (4 PLACES)

Streetscape was running well enough earlier in the year, including on Tapeta, to suggest there might be a modest handicap to be won with him. However, he put in a shocker on what turned out to be his final start for the Barron yard, when a beaten fvourite and finishing last of ten over a mile at Newcastle in July.

His two runs for new connections in Ireland have been over 14f on soft / heavy ground, and while he has shaped as though middle distances may be within reach, perhaps his stamina has been stretched, though he wasn't disgraced on the former occasion at Listowel.

Streetscape is back in trip to 10.5f today and hopefully he'll find this first try on Polytrack a  more suitable surface, while it's encouraging that his yard have had a couple of NH winners in the past fortnight.

Tasever, 1pt EW @ 16-1, 6.50 Newcastle

It looked a decent effort from Tasever on his penultimate start at Pontefract (one mile, g-s)  when he just failed to get up and was one of three to pull clear. He was well backed on the back of this last time over 7f on heavy ground at Catterick, but he didn't face an easy task against older opposition when upped in grade, and he finished well held.

This will be just his second Tapeta start having run okay here as a juvenile in a novice over 6f. The return to a mile should suit given how well he finished his race off at Pontefract, as should this drop in grade and being back against his own age group.

Cheers and thanks for the kind words.

Some people have been writing to the RP with their "safer gambling strategies" for "Safer Gambling Week", and one contributor was a certain Mr Alan Potts, who was saying that he likes to convince himself that a bet is worth placing by writing down a few lines of reasoning, and even being prepared to send this reasoning on to a couple of acquaintances, but only if he's convinced that the case is a solid one.

(Btw, I've managed to lose Monday's paper so I'm having to recall this from memory Crazy)

He recalled a time when he was thinking of backing one but when he came to write down the reasoning, he found that the case was a weak one.

Anyway, no selections from me today cuz I was struggling to make a case for anything!

Day 193

Action Motion, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 6.15 Dundalk (4 PLACES)

Action Motion did me a big favour on my juvenile hurdler thread last season when he turned over a Willie Mullins-trained odds-on shot at Cork, having previously shaped with plenty of promise on his hurdling debut at the same course. It was disappointing that he didn't go on afterwards, including back on the Flat during the summer when he came in for market support on a couple of occasions.

Action Motion is still of a little interest because I had actually noted him over 10.5f at Dundalk last October on what turned out to be his final run for Andy Oliver, when I thought his effort might have wanted marking up based on how the race panned out. He was returned here for his latest start over that same trip on his first run for Miss Shauna Larkin, having previously been trained by the currently banned Denis Hogan, and he again didn't run too badly while shaping as though this evening's trip of 12f may suit better.

Given he didn't go on after a promising start to the year it remains to be seen whether he can build on that latest effort which came off a 72-day break, but a chance is taken at the odds given he has shaped as though he has a bigger effort in him round here, and is now 7lb lower than for that penultimate course run.

Lady Christa, 1pt EW @ 11-1, 8.15 Dundalk (4 PLACES)

Lady Christa was perhaps a bit unfortunate not to win at Navan (10f, yelding) in early September having not enjoyed the smoothest of trips, including when hampered by a loose horse over 2f out, before losing out on the bob. She didn't back this effort up on her latest start back at the same course, but perhaps the combination of 14f on soft ground found her out.

Lady Christa has to prove herself on Polytrack (her previous course run came over 7f when qualifying for a mark), but is a half-sister to a dual two-mile course winner (by ****) and  being back on a better surface can suit. She is unexposed at trips beyond a mile, and while jockey bookings confuse the picture as the main stable rider Robbie Colgan is on a stablemate, hopefully she can give a good account if running to the form of her penultimate start, off just a 2lb higher mark.

Day 194

Kehlani, 1pt EW @ 20-1, 6.00 Chelmsford

I'm going to give another chance to Kehlani, who ran well at Southwell in August when stepped up to 12f in first-time cheekpieces, when she was never too far away and, although unable to match the winner who came from off the pace, galloped out well to finish second of the 14 runners. Her two runs since have been underwhelming, at Lingfield (13f) where the winner of the Southwell race followed up, and when I selected her last-time-out at Wolverhampton (14f) where she was dropped in after being caught wide early and found the race not being run to suit.

Kehlani steps up to two miles this evening, and while she has to prove her stamina and effectiveness at this track, she remains unexposed at middle distances and beyond, and I suspect based on the Southwell evidence that there is a bigger effort in her.

Havana Rose, 1pt EW @ 25-1, 7.45 Wolverhampton

Havana Rose's effort two starts back over 6f at Pontefract (g-s) might have wanted marking up when splitting the joint-favourites, having possibly had the tougher trip two-wide and forced the pace, before being headed towards the finish.

The concern now is that she disappointed on her latest start at Newcastle (5f) when she was noticeably weak in the betting, so there is a definite query over her effectiveness on the AW, but a chance is taken at the prices, as she may appreciate being back on a turning 6f and has the inside draw to work from.
By:
GEORGE.B
When: 21 Nov 23 20:21
Kehlani got a nice position just in behind the pace on the rail but her effort up the straight was disappointing.

Havana Rose ran well when last seen on turf but has now offered little in a couple of AW starts.

Day 195

Sycamore, 1pt EW @ 18-1, 4.15 Southwell (4 PLACES)

It looked a good effort over C/D last December from Sycamore when finishing second of 13 to one who came from well off the pace (and who followed up off a 5lb higher mark on his next start), when perhaps his effort wanted marking up considering he might have got to the front soon enough in that strongly run contest but kept on well before being headed close home.

The worry is that he wasn't then seen ten months before reappearing at Pontefract, where he was sent off at huge odds and finished last of 16 from a poor draw. So there is a bit to be taken on trust here, but there seemingly has been a bit of support for him in the overnight markets, and he can race off a mark 2lb lower mark than for that previous run here.

Canaria Queen, 1pt EW @ 33-1, 7.45 Southwell (4 PLACES)

There didn't appear any fluke about it when Canaria Queen defeated the long odds-on Sacred Falls in a novice at Musselburgh (5f, g-s) in September, and that filly has since won and run well in defeat in handicap company.

Canaria Queen has only run once since, when never looking in a good place at Ripon (5f, good, Khabib 5th). She's had a 55-day break since, so fitness has to be taken on trust, and this doesn't look easy against some experienced handicappers, but she looks open to further progress after just a few starts, and while she as to prove herself on the AW, she is a half-sister to a C/D winner.
By:
GEORGE.B
When: 24 Nov 23 20:56
A couple of risky ones today in that they weren't being selected on the basis of a recent effort and unfortunately I've engaged reverse again.

Sycamore had been absent ten months following a good run over C/D, and was returning from another short break here, and he looked to need it, racing prominently before weakening from over a furlong out.

Canaria Queen, another returning from a break, missed a beat at the start and then ran into trouble over 2f out and lost a good position from just in behind the pace, before making a little late headway. She is eligible for weaker races.

Day 196

Dontspoilasale, 1pt EW @ 5-1, 5.00 Dundalk

Dontspoilasale has been disappointing in a couple of starts here since returning from an 80-day break, including last time in the race won by Cash Or Crypto, but he is of interest based on two good runs here in the summer in stronger contests, notably over C/D in July when he finished second to subsequent course Group 3 winner Dun Na Sead, with AW stalwart and subsequent course winner Harry's Bar behind him in third.

He can now race off a 9lb lower mark, so if it's just been a case of needing the two runs following his absence, then there's no doubt he's become well handicapped if restored back to that previous form.

Leap Day, 1pt EW @ 40-1, 5.15 Newcastle (4 PLACES)

Leap Day made quite an encouraging debut over 6f at this course in March, considering he's from a yard whose runners tend to need their initial experience, but he ran well to finish a close-up third having been drawn in one and not helped his chance by drifting to the far side when green off the bridle. The Richard Fahey-trained winner has since run well to make the frame in competitive handicaps on turf and looked unfortunate not to go closer when returned to this course last month. The horse who finished over five lengths behind Leap Day in 4th place, has been a dual winner on turf since.

Leap Day failed to win when switched to the turf, though was only touched off by a nose in a 7.5f Beverley maiden back in May. He disappointed when belatedly returned to this track in a 6f novice last month but the run might have been needed on his return from a 5-month break and wasn't helped by being pestered for the lead.

Hopefully that has advanced his fitness ahead of this step back up in trip 7f, and he remains of interest on the AW, particularly as two of his half-brothers Enduring and Men Tian have shown their best form on synthetics.

Bright Dick, 1pt EW @ 13-2, 7.00 Dundalk (4 PLACES)

Bright Dick could be described as a 'late-headway monkey' having caught the eye here last winter on occasions and at the Galway festival with his finishing efforts, but there should be a race of this nature in him, and although his latest start here wasn't one of his better ones, he might have done a bit too much too soon from his wide draw having been keen too.

Master Garvey, 1pt EW @ 7-1, 7.30 Dundalk (4 PLACES)

Master Garvey is still a maiden after 17 starts but has made the frame on turf on five occasions and he shaped well here last time on what was just his second AW start, when stepped up to  10.5f, where he took a grip close-up in a race where the first two were held-up round the inner, but he kept on okay to finish 4th albeit no match for the first two.

He did enough to suggest he stays that trip but given the way he tanked through the race it will be interesting to see if a mile suits better round here, the trip he was narrowly touched off over when finishing second of 15 at Limerick in June, when rated 6lb higher.

Master Garvey is a half-brother to three AW winners including one over C/D, so he may be open to improvement on Polytrack, hopefully today provided he doesn't pull his chance away from a double-figure draw.
By:
GEORGE.B
When: 08 Dec 23 20:23
Dontspoilasale ran well to finish clear of the third but ran into one who evidently is at the top of his game currently.

A better run from Leap Day who got up for third place at decent odds.

Unfortunately things took a turn for the worse at this point with Bright Dick disappointing and Master Garvey again not settling and, having found himself three wide disputing the lead, he faded out of it.

Day 197

Swiss Rowe, 1pt EW @ 25-1, 8.30 Kempton (4 PLACES)

Swiss Rowe is a C/D winner who probably ran better than his finishing position suggested here last month when returning from a six-week break, when he had to use up some gas to get across from a wide draw, in a race where the second and third came from off the pace, but only lost second place a furlong out weakening out of it, perhaps the run just being needed.

He's a bit better drawn this time and this is a slightly lower grade, so provided the removal of the headgear isn't a negative, hopefully he can give a good account.

Spacer, 1pt EW @ 25-1, 7.00 Kempton (4 PLACES)

I'm going to give another chance to Spacer, who ran well last season at Leicester against a filly who went on to win a Racing League handicap, and he ran some race fair races in defeat at Wolverhampton after.

Spacer was returning from ten-months off when weakening out of it over C/D last month in the race won by Dark Side Prince, when he wasn't helped by being drawn wide. He doesn't have a great draw again here but hopefully that run has advanced his fitness and blinkers are given a go.
By:
GEORGE.B
When: 13 Dec 23 20:36
A couple of dismal ones.

Swiss Rowe had the headgear removed and Liam Keniry was taking over from Billy Loughnane in the saddle. He was poorly positioned from the outset having been squeezed out at the start and was never in it.

An absolute shocker from Spacer, who was slowly away, then keen round the outer before racing very wide into the straight and then he stopped to nothing inside the final furlong.
