Good evening Guys,
Alan will be posting his Salisbury report tomorrow, the last i heard he was spotted carrying a rather bloated Tesco carrier bag and boarding a BA flight to Antigua ![]() Alan Seriously, VWD with Eagle Court and at a poignant time, almost 42 years since your last winner. Michael in terrific form with a 75% strike rate (3/4) recently and i'm not going to ask if you were on the double. ![]() |

I didn't see the interview on RTV, but apparently Michael Blake said that he's thinking about giving up training as he's down to just five horses - and he's won with three of them this week!
So any millionaires looking in thinking about who to send your horses to, you could do worse than Mr Blake, imo! |

Evening,
Thanks for all the comments. The sort of day that makes the whole idea of owning worthwhile. From where I was watching at the far end of the Tatts stand, I didn't think he'd got up and when the PA system called 'First number nine' I thought I'd misheard it. Great credit to the trainer who has got this horse right and also the jockey, as I can think of plenty of others we've used that wouldn't have managed that win today. He seems a very laid back young man, but he listened to what we told him and rode accordingly. Eagle Court will now be stepped up to 1m 6f, as it was clear today that the longer trip should benefit him. Provisional plan is a return to Salisbury on May 27th. Forty two years ago with a horse like this, I'be thinking about the Ebor - nowadays, he'd need to win about six or seven more races to get close to a run in that! |

Thanks to the stable having two winners yesterday and mine winning the race with the most prize money, we are currently the leading owner and trainer at Salisbury this season. Pity they race again on Sunday!
Moving on to todays racing, one of the horses I commented on favourably after my visit to the Craven meeting (Apr 21 post) runs again today. Like A Tiger won a handicap then off a mark of 83, scoring easily despite rearing up and losing at least four lengths as the stalls opened. He was put up 9lbs for that and I expected that he'd be saved for the £100k 10F handicap at Newbury later this month. But Ferguson has opted for a lesser prize in a tougher race, which also risks wasting that handicap mark. He's currently showing as 7/2 favourite, but it's a big leap from winning a class 3 handicap to Listed level - not for me today at that price. |

Good afternoon Guys,
Pushed for time, so a short post. First day of the Guineas meeting and a decent card, albeit maybe a tricky one. I'm not convinced Hurricane Lane (3.35) is anywhere near as good as he was (i saw him at Newbury recently) and to a lesser extent, feel the same way about Native Trail (1.50). I consider both are lays, but so far i've only had one bet, a back of West Wind Blows, another i have seen, albiet at Longchamp in the Prix Dollar last year. It was bordering on heavy then that i don't think suited him, todays good to firm will. Has to prove stamina over the 12f trip, and although beaten in both attempts, one was in the Epsom Derby on only his 3rd run, and he was keen at Goodwood. He certainly wasn't stopping over 11f in a listed race at Hamilton. If he can replicate his penultimate Lonchamp run he could win this afternoon. Good luck and have a nice afternoon all. Alan Thanks for your Salisbury comment and potential lay selection. |

Good Morning Guys,
So much for my thinking yesterday that Hurricane Lane was regressing, he couldn't have won any easier. I expected a better run from the favourite, but maybe 12f in decent company is a step too far. 2000 guineas day and regular readers know i'm a big fan of Noble Style (at least last year) and i've backed him ante-post, albeit at lower odds than he is today. Of course stamina was always a quandary, but he has a bit of class and a good turn of foot, hence i was hoping for decent ground. It may well be he's more of a Ten Sovereigns type who ran well in the classic on wrong side of the track a few years back, but in any event i don't fancy the favourite Auguste Rodin at all and will be laying him to cover my NS stake with change. Clearly the rightful favourite, but is the Futurity form that good. I think Lethal Levi has a chance in the sprint (2.50). Ran well in half decent sprints on several occasions (twice winner on the July Course). Generally runs up with the pace and dawn in 9, Clifford can decide which side to be on. A tentative win and 4/TBP, best price 16/1 with the books, but they love these big field handicaps, so only a small stake. I planned to post the below for the Brocklesby stakes on opening day of the flat. The sort of race where a sole lucky pin isn't sufficient and maybe several wouldn't be. Not a race to bet in really unless you were privy to stable information, but among the outsiders i thought the Grant Tuer trained filly Bellarchi could surprise around 25/1 with the books. A Nick Bradley syndicate, £30,000 yearling, speedily bred. Sire, dam and dam-sire all won on 2 year old debut. Trainer stats with 2-year-old newcomers a negative, but that could be said for many here. I read a trainer comment that he thought the filly would run well, but she would be better on decent ground. It was heavy at Doncaster and she was subsequently withdrawn. Unfortunately, no 25/1 at Thirsk (1.30) this afternoon, but may be worth a small play, she certainly has the breeding for 5f and is in receipt of weight. Good luck and have a nice Saturday all. |

Well I don't think that was 'a turn of foot' as he doesn't possess such a thing. He just kept going at his own speed and the others were slowing, which is the reality of most races. For him to win at 12F, evrything had to go right - ground, jockey, getting the position on the inside rail thus saving ground, gap appears at just the right moment and stays open for him to get through, and finally the runner-up doing everything possible to throw the race away.
The way handicaps work, he gets raised for the win, so has to improve to win again. Both my trainer and I reckon his best chance of showing that improvement is to run a longer trip. And he had form at 2M when he was with David O'Meara and won at 1M 6F last year with Tom Ward, so it's not as if we're heading into uncharted waters. |

Good afternoon Guys,
First day of the Boodles May festival meeting at Chester (worlds' oldest racecourse) but i'm not really enamoured with the card, even allowing for the G3 Vase won by Shergar in bygone years. Maybe i'm getting too picky after attending a couple of decent NH festivals and seeing the eventual 2000 guineas winner at Newbury this year. A couple of shorties on the card although neither are bomb-proof, but if i was forced to back one of them, it would be Savethelastdance in the Cheshire Oaks. A small field of 5 in the Chester Vase (3.15) although i can't see the lowest rated (88) Galactic Jack winning, but i think the field is closer than ratings of the other 4 may indicate and i certainly wouldn't want to be lumping on Arrest at 4/6. First run of the season, Chester, step up in trip and this race is an afterthought after Sandown was abandoned, so backers have a few points to consider. I would certainly be a layer than a backer, risky though it is. In the opening Lily Agnes sprint (1.30) Ryan Moore and Ziggy Phoenix will be popular from the favoured inside draw, but i think the more speedily bred, Balon D'or owned by Michael Owen can win, even though he's drawn out in the car park and concedes the 5 lb filly allowance. He looked speedy on debut after being carried right and the form has been franked with a couple of winners and a runner-up already. There's plenty of pace on his inner and he will need a decent break from stall 11. A tentative selection and not a race to be too involved with stake wise. A few comments on my Saturday post. I got Auguste Rodin right, but didn't lay it for as much as i should have considering my thoughts since the Futurity last year. Noble Style didn't stay the 8f, but to be honest when the going turned soft i was more or less resigned to losing my ante-post bet (only small, but double figure odds). He was backed on the day and ran well in fairness, only run out of 4th place close home. I haven't lost faith, i think he's decent and hopefully will show his real form in the Commonwealth Cup next month. My tentative selection of an unraced Grant Tuer trained 2-year old filly, Bellarchi (SP 8/1) almost paid off, staying on strongly well to be 3rd, only beaten 0.75L. Part of my reasoning was the sire, dam and dam-sire all won on 2-year old debut, so failing to continue the trend, but she will win soon. One horse i meant to mention last week was Mr Hollywood, not many will be aware of this one as it's German trained and won the G3 Bavarian Classic at München on May 1st. Only a couple of runs to date, winning his debut maiden by no less than 16L. He was impressive in München, still green and looks to have a good future, although the going may determine where he runs, at least on current evidence (both runs on heavy). Köln is probably next on the agenda, then the German Derby, who knows, we may even see him at Longchamp in October. One to keep an eye on, maybe even an ante-post at silly odds for the Arc, albeit very early days of course. I had thought to go to the course for the race, but the weather wasn't good. The Arc could be a decent field this year, even without the Japanese superstar Equinox, and we saw another top-class French 3-year old, Big Rock winning impressively at Chantilly yesterday, adding to an ever-increasing list of potential winners under the tri-colour. One horse i'm looking forward to this weekend runs at Longchamp on Sunday, and i will be there to watch her, Blue Rose Cen in the French 1000 guineas (already backed ante-post). Regular readers know i like this filly, i saw/backed her in the Prix Marcel Boussac during Arc weekend last year, she was impressive that day and i made a mental note of her, just as i did with Zarkava in the same race many years ago. She won the G3 Prix De La Grotte over CD last month, reinforcing my opinion of her. More on her Sunday. Changing topic, my travelling expenses in Germany have become cheaper (all residents actually). Last year i posted on my thread that the Government and DB/MVV were working together to issue a 9-euro monthly ticket for all transportation in Germany, bus, tram, S-Bahn/U Bahn and regional trains (not IC or ICE) during June, July and August due to the cost-of-living increase. As you can imagine, it was a massive success, so since May 1st, it has been reintroduced at a monthly cost of 49 euros, not only for the summer months, but a permanent fixture. A superb deal, even cheaper than my monthly S-Bahn card with München zone restriction i use to travel to/from work. The same conditions, no IC or ICE (express) trains, but we can even travel to Hamburg in the north, just not as fast. I plan to be using at weekends as well for the obvious reasons, so a visit to Baden-Baden (on my bucket list) is on the cards. Good luck and have a nice Wednesday all. Alan/PHS Thanks for the posts, always good to read sensible debate. |

Good afternoon Guys,
A shortish post as i'm pushed for time. An array of meetings this afternoon and something for all tastes, NH, flat turf and AW with an interesting card at Lingfield featuring a few potential Epsom classic runners next month. When i flipped through the online RP last night i thought Sacred would be closer to evens in the betting than the current 7/4 in the Chartwell fillies stakes (2.25). The drift would be a question mark, but on form she should win this, classiest in the field, runs well fresh, decent draw and RM on board. Never race on an AW surface, but i think she wins. Another shortie i liked was Lawton (Leicester 7.10) and i actually put this one up in the forum team competition although she was 2.28 at the time. I wouldn't have done so at the current odds-on, although i feel the backing is valid. Well backed on debut, took a while to get going, but ran on well in the final furlong to be 3rd with the rest well beaten. Looked to be tenderly handled late on. Going will be fine and not much depth in the race, i expect him to win. I often put up a runner in the days big handicap although it's not the type of betting i favour and anyone following the selections is probably sleeping on the streets. Nevertheless, fortune follows the brave etc, so my tentative W/4TBP (BF odds of 13.5/3.65) is Biggles in the 7f Victoria Cup (Ascot 2.40). Consistent, 6 wins from 13, 5 of them over 7f. Soft/heavy not an issue. Beaten 1.5L by Rainbow Fire LTO, but is 4lb better off and will be fitter for the run. One i think looks too short in the betting at 2/1 is the AB trained Be Happy (Ascot 3.00). She ran well enough (looked a little one-paced) at Saint Cloud LTO and the winner Pensee Du Jour is useful (among the fancied runners for the Prix Diane) but there are a few potentially decent fillies in the field, including Bright Diamond. I would be a layer of the probable favourite. I'm off to Paris this evening (Air France permitting) for the Guineas meeting at Longchamp tomorrow. Not the first time i've been to a non-Arc meeting, but never for a classic, so another tick in the box. Looking forward to it, no big crowds, 20 euro entry and seating on 3rd stage. If Blue Rose Cen wins, it will be all the better. Good luck and have a nice Saturday all. PHS Thank you for ttt. |

Not happy, never happy about going up in the weights. But it's fair enough and he's won off marks in the 80's in the past, so hopefully we still have a bit in hand. The runner-up, Vega Sicillia was raised 2lbs to 84 and he's entered in both the 12F handicaps at York on Wednesday and will give us a guide to the form if he runs.

Good morning Guys from a very overcast La Defense area in Paris.
Expected to be sunny/cloudy, 22c this afternoon. Many thanks for the comments yesterday, much appreciated. A good day financially although i didn't play the 12/1 runner-up Biggles in the Victoria Cup, a topical tip for an aerospace engineer. Looking forward to the French 2000 and 1000 guineas meeting at Longchamp this afternoon although i'm only interested in the 3 Group 1 races, albeit only fun bets in a couple of them. Regular readers know i'm a big fan of Blue Rose Cen rightful favourite for the Poule d'Essai des Pouliche (3.30) trained by the Chantilly based Christopher Head, another addition to the ranks from the dynasty going back generations (son of Freddie and nephew of Criquette). A relative newcomer to training starting out in 2018 and the filly gave him a first Group 1 in the Prix Marcel Boussac on Arc day last October. I was there and visibly impressed with her performance that day, enough to make a mental note that she could win this race, just as i did with Zarkava in bygone years. 5 wins (3 in group class) from 7 runs and only beaten a short neck in a listed race last year. Stays 8f strongly, 3 unbeaten runs at Longchamp over the trip all on soft/heavy, a good turn of foot, clear on ratings and a good draw in 1 are positives. Group 1's are rarely easy to win, but the field could have been stronger. Never Ending Story has to be considered, but she was beaten 5.25L by the selection in the Boussac and even allowing for having to be switched wouldn't have reduced the deficit by much. Sired by Dubawi she can be expected to improve, but will 8f on heavy stretch her. Won well enough LTO beating the eventual Newmarket 1000 guineas 3rd, but is this form good enough. Nevertheless a worthy rival. She may make the running and if anything else is going to win they will have to chase her down in the final furlong. I've backed the filly on 3 occasions and for this race (including ante-post at 2/1) and i expect her to win. Elsewhere on the card, i don't have a strong opinion in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliche (2.50) but i will not be backing or laying the well fancied American Flag or Isaac Shelby who i saw in the Greenham at Newbury recently. I may have a couple of tenners on the outsiders, Knight and Good Guess at decent EW odds, but both are tentative selections and with questions to answer. In the Prix Alary (4.10) i will be against the likely short priced favourite Jannah Rose who was a late withdrawl from the fillies classic and back Late Sea, who has to improve to win, but this is likely. Good luck and have a nice Sunday all. |

Going report courtesy of France Galop.
It has rained a lot in the Parisian region during the first part of the week, but the track has been drying out. On Friday morning, the penetrometer reading was 4.2 (very soft). The grass will be trimmed to a final depth of 11cms on Saturday. We expect the ground to ride very soft on Sunday and anticipate a penetrometer reading of around 3.9. The rail will remain in its usual place, which hasn’t been the case since the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Meeting: and this will give rise to a 10m strip of fresh ground. The open-stretch, 5m out from the running rail, will also come into play |

Good morning, Andrew. I can vouch for the fact we have had lots of rain in the last week. It was stair rained buckets here on Friday though we are several hundred miles from Longchamp. Still it is not the weather for roofing, that's for sure. Good luck with your selections today.
