correct muff..but,,how did the rp have it in at evens on known form?  and recently sold for 2 bob.

looks like the RP forecast isn't solely based on form but who trains 'em.

it's a forecast not a formcast, and they were right(on this occasion), tough job.

Maybe they saw the early market(s). Looking at the 365 graph which is still available on oddschecker, it would appear the horse was to cut to odds-on at around 4 yesterday afternoon.

george with respect..take a look at its form..2 moderate runs then a shocker..sold for 2 bob out of stoutes..running against 2 solid 70 horses with recent solid form..how could you put it in at evens when doing the comments the day before?

Maybe he didn't, and it changed after they saw the early market prices, which would have been available yesterday afternoon. That's what I was saying in my previous post.

Sometimes the spotlight writers do their forecast two days in advance once the final decs are known, and they can be seen when you open the race on the RP site, but don't know if that was the case in this instance and their initial forecast was changed before going to print.

But agree, it did seem short, though a number of these Boughey-trained handicaps debutant(e)s have been going in having seemingly shown little in qualifying runs eg in recent weeks: Pocket The Packet, Vision Of Hope, Hadley Park, Queen Of Ipanema.

And Hugh Taylor had pointed out in one of his columns towards the end of last year, albeit I think when referring to nurseries (not older horse handicaps like today's), that Boughey was getting some extraordinary results on the switch to handicaps.

So just like Sir Mark Prescott, his horses can be different propositions once handicapping, and the market is reacting accordingly.

Yep Boughey (and a couple of others) are the new Prescotts and will be equally unpredictable (unless you're well connected) for a couple of decades. Assuming the sport lasts that long. I'm with you Rico - RP markets quite amazingly close given how little reliable information there is regarding form, but somehow, some know stuff we don't know.

I agree with George. Prices for the next day are readily available before the paper goes to print. Any big discrepancies between forecast prices can be edited beforehand. Can’t imagine many putting that in at Evens off their own back.

Very surprised this went for only 3k on the back of it's eyecatching Windsor run.

The race had a bad vibe about it imo, my take on it was the money for the winner came from folk who thought the Prescott horse was going to run a stinker. Not sure how they knew.

They were saying on the barstewards' podcast last night that Boughey has been informed that his horses have to run four times from now before qualifying for a mark.

He had another one go in on handicap debut on Saturday.

really GEORGE.B,  bit young to be a marked man. Why exactly he should be singled out when they're all at it, just not as a good at it as him.

Apart from the examples I gave above, they listed Spangled Mac, Phantasy Mac and Simply Sondhiem, all improving around 30lb or more from their initial marks.

You could argue it's excellent training, as he's getting them to progress with racing, as his did at a higher level with his Guineas winner.

And they point out, they're not always being punted on their handicap debuts, so it's necessarily a gambling thing.

I'm not defending Boughey, but they don't always improve 30lb on the 4th run, they may progress up to 30lb+ after next 3 or 4 hc runs, he can argue that's just natural progression with racing. obv the truth may be very different.

You just can't back Marmara Star with what it has done so far. Of course it could well hose up and run up a sequence lol as has happened many times
I've backed Densetsu in the race, early drifter last night but shortened up a bit today

One of Boughey's that did catch my eye last year smacking of a blatant handicap project was Morning Symphony, if only because they were running over a trip too short based on pedigree, and sure enough once stepped up in trip to 12f on handicap debut in it went, but seemingly unbacked at 20-1 in a seven-runner race. Got beat on her next start and they soon got rid.
