Great jockey at his best. Probably lasted a bit longer due to the poor standard he was riding against when he's probably been only 50% of his top level.

Agree with the poor timing , all we'll get now for months on end will be " What did blah blah mean to you and how special was it "

A week would have been sufficient notice to prevent it becoming tedious and everyone wishing he would disappear sooner rather than later.

Could have been worse though , could have been a boxer which would have meant retire in 10 months and back in the ring in a year.

Not another ex-jockey pundit wheeled out at the big meetings.

No more testing regimes to worry about, so he can chill
Report impossible123 December 17, 2022 7:39 PM GMT
I think the time is right. Frankie does not need the money nor the travelling to small meetings to educate potential Group horses. Also, some of the unnecessary and unsavoury comments from connections this season made his decision to retire post next is astute and professionally correct.

I hope he retires post Derby 2023 (not Champions Day) or maybe prior eg Royal Ascot (no Queen Elizabeth 2nd) if Mr Gosden has no potential world beater next season. He's earned his right to enjoy the rest of his life away from horseracing and be with his family instead.
Report swiftynifty December 17, 2022 7:46 PM GMT
What a shame he just didn't announce it after a big win. This will drag on longer than Elton John's farewell tour.
Report Hayden December 17, 2022 7:49 PM GMT
I agree the time is right to retire but not the duration between now and his last ride , the meantime will be saturated with media overkill.

He's also said he's making the Breeders Cup his final meeting , nothing wrong with that but why not make the announcement after the ARC , would have saved us all the lazy journalistic scripted questions for many months unnecessarily.

All that said he's been great for the sport albeit with a couple of mishaps along the way , i wish him well but i must remember to wish him well again next November.
Report impossible123 December 17, 2022 8:02 PM GMT
I think Frankie rode Bold Illusion (or Bold something) when it won, and was interviewed by Derek Thompson on tv. I thought what a pleasant and likeable individual. I think he was barely 18yrs old then.

I hope he retires post a very big race win eg Derby 2023 on Auguste Rodin. I'm sure his mate AOB would willingly facilitate this, if so. A memorable event for both parties, I'd imagine.
Report Hayden December 17, 2022 8:10 PM GMT
My guess would be he'll stick to the Breeders Cup finale , however wealthy he may have become a couple of juicy rides pledged for that meeting and he wouldn't be able to resist the payday , big money and a final winner at the Breeders would do him just nicely i reckon.

Good luck to him. I hate to say it but he rode poorly last season and should of called it a day then. Hopefully he can re find himself

Why do the racing post call it a bombshell? he said last year he was retiring at the end of 2023 hardly new news
Report driver2 December 18, 2022 5:42 AM GMT
I thought he said, originally, that he would be riding at least until the end of 2023!

Is it really worth getting that angry about ?
Report Cider December 18, 2022 11:46 AM GMT
It's going to be fairly tedious, a bit like a jockeys title race that only jockeys care about after every race one of the protagonist either wins, or is involved in.

The generous view, and I feel the most likely is that it maximises the chances of getting the best rides over the year.
