Step 1: Don't be a mug, Step 2: Be shrewd, Step 3: Make easy money from people who don't follow the first 2 steps.

I'd agree with OP that pro-punting is a myth. I firmly believe any astute and savvy punter would have had their account restricted or closed in no time by online/high street bookies similarly racecourse bookies too once one's face is known. And, with AC private info of any punter will be used to facilitate these two sharp practices of bookies sooner rather later.
Also, the liquidity of The Exchange esp antepost of prestigious races is a no-go either; private info could be used to stifle liquidity further and so will the increased risk of no-show esp from stables with multiple entries. As such, I believe the alternative unregulated market will thrive at the expense and cost of the horseracing industry. A revamp and/or radical approach to funding is long overdue, and hopefully assisted by an industry savvy and visionary "professional" guardian ie BHA. |

I imagine any "savvy punter" would do all his betting on the exchanges. How many Betfair customers have had their accounts restricted excluding Sportsbook? |

the opening poster should have said
I DO NOT KNOW ANYONE WHO MAKES IT PAYS FROM BETTTING .....FACT i know at least four people who make it pay betting greyhounds.....FACT |

Let's suppose someone is a successful punter -what happens when they want to give the game up? Unless they've been making class 3 voluntary Nics contributions they won't have the 35 years of contributions to get the full state pension at 66 (or later) and if they have made alternative pension contributions may not have benefitted from tax relief to boost contributions. [A non taxpayer can get some boost but it isn't much.] So maybe they've got buy to lets or a high yielding share portfolio. Can't be easy.

Tv appearance
Advertising Books Tipping lines Property etc etc etc I was punting on course 1991 - 1998 no other income, membership of every course in Scotland and travelled to most Northern down south. All paid by betting income no exchanges. The so called pro nowadays is a myth 100%. |

The Dalgleish runner in the 14.20….keep an eye on this……

I would imagine the expenses were high, that's why an alternative income is useful to offset the expenses.

Yes petrol,B&b/Hotel and food,one week away usually Monday- Saturday £300 - £400 +
Scotland without digs £150 |

Alternative income is not pressure of sole punting to survive.

I sat having coffee at Musselburgh when a certain ‘pro’ was signing and selling his books to punters, another income, I’m certain he lost punting that day….
|
|
By:
All the racing channels since day one used them and plugged them ‘the faces’ load of bull.
|
|
By:
All “pro punters†I’ve ever known are either on the dole or too lazy to work. All of them asked to borrow money frequently.
It’s just a way to justify their existence. My racing group has some of the bigger punters who bet huge amounts. They are have successful business. When we used to go hospitality with Betfair and Paddy there were NO Pro punters I ever met. |

There was a group around the late 80’s early 90’s that made a good deal of money every week from placepots around Epsom. Backing outside the pool at Lads and Wh but backing multiple horses for 1p or 1/2p (understaking on purpose) x thousands of bets. If you had a 5 horse race they put fav in 6 times, second fav 4 times, third fav 3 times and rags one time. Virtually every horse would covered whatever the result of the meeting. If they laid out £400 the equivalent tote bet was £4k or 8k. They were the closest to pro punters I knew as they made big money until the bookies closed the loophole by going tote.
Bit like the hole in one golf bettors I suppose. |
|
By:
In the modern day climate, I can't imagine why anyone would want to be a 'pro-punter'.
Dreadful lifestyle to lead IMO. Much rather have a solid financial basis (whatever that might be), and use punting as a more pleasant way to create a sideline and additional income stream. Don't need the stress of having to make money gambling in my life. |
|
By:
But they all worked day or night jobs as well.
|
|
By:
the pressure would be too much of having to win to pay bills expenses etc , better to have a few side hustles to bring in extra steady income.
